Notes: Abstract Waste rubber powder was grafted with different vinyl monomers by using gamma-radiation. The monomers used for grafting were acrylic acid, acrylamide and acrylonitrile. The sodium salt of grafted polyacrylic acid as well as the amidoxime derivative of grafted polycacrylonitrile were also obtained. Evaluation of the efficiency of the products obtained to the recovery of some metal ions such as cobalt and nickel as well as to phenol was carried out. It was found that the grafted waste rubber powder is able to recover cobalt and nickel ions from their corresponding salts depending on the type of monomers used. It was also found that phenol can be reasonably recovered by using rubber powder grafted with acrylamide and amidoxime derivative.

Notes: Abstract The aminolysis of hexachlorocyclodiphosphazane with substituted or unsubstituted arylamines, led to the preparation of some new organophosphorus compounds. It was also possible to isolate some new geometrical isomers containing substituted arylamines. It has been found that the aminolysis reactions of 1,3-diaryl-2,2,2,4,4,4-hexachlorocyclodiphosphazane take place without ring cleavage of the cyclodiphosphazane ring system, leading to 1,3-diaryl-2-oxo-2,2,4-arylcyclodiphosphazanes. The structures of these aminophosphorus compounds were substantiated on the basis of microanalytical data, infrared, ultraviolet and proton NMR spectroscopic evidence. Hexachlorocyclodiphosphazane and some aminosubstituted cyclodiphosphazane compounds were irradiated by gamma-rays and the ultraviolet measurements before and after irradiation were discussed. It was observed that all the absorption bands show the highest absorptivity values at a particular irradiation integral dose for each of the irradiated compounds. From the ultraviolet results and mass spectrometric data, it may be suggested that the possible decomposition sites of the amino-substituted cyclodiphosphazanes are at the double bond between the four-membered ring and the exocyclic phenyl ring and at the double bond between the four-membered ring and the oxygen atom.

Notes: Cationic membranes were prepared by direct radiation grafting of acrylic acid (AAc) and methacrylic acid (MAA) onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoropropylvinyl ether) (PFA) films, followed by alkaline treatment to confer ionic character in the graft copolymer. The addition of inhibitor such as Mohr's salt, FeCl3 and CuCl2 was used to achieve the complete inhibition of homopolymerization of the monomer. The dependence of the grafting rate on AAc and MAA concentration was found to be of the order of 1.3 and 0.62, respectively. Investigation of the mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, dimensional change and swelling behaviour of the grafted films revealed that such a copolymer could be acceptable in practical use as a cation-exchange membrane.

Notes: A study has been made for the preparation of membranes by the direct radiation grafting of acrylic and methacrylic acids onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene-vinylidene fluoride) TFB films. The appropriate reaction conditions were selected under which the graft polymerization was carried out successfully. In this grafting system, ammonium ferrous sulfate (Mohr's salt), ferric chloride, and cuppric chloride were used as inhibitors to minimize the homopolymerization of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. Also, the effect of monomer concentration on the rate of grafting was investigated. The dependence of the grafting rate on monomer concentration was found to be of the order of 1.1 and 1.0 for acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, respectively. This grafting system was proceeded by a front mechanism. Some selected properties of the grafted films such as swelling behavior, dimensional change, and mechanical and electrical properties were investigated. It was found that the grafted membranes possess good hydrophilic properties that may make them promising in some practical applications. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
