    Notes: Abstract The estimated parameters from a Gauss-Markov model have varying sensitivity to the individual observations included in the model. Similarly, the redundancy contribution (number) of any observation is associated differently to all the other observations in the model. Evaluation of the sensitivity of parameters to observations, and the sensitivity of the redundancy contribution of one observation to the others are useful to gain more insight into Gauss-Markov models. Such analysis has found practical applications in survey network design and in multiple outlier detections. This paper presents some quantitative sensitivity measures for general Gauss-Markov models. The application of the concept in surveying network design is also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract When applying single outlier detection techniques, such as the Tau (τ) test, to examine the residuals of observations for outliers, the number of detected observations in any iteration of adjustment is most often more numerous than the actual number of true outliers. A new technique is proposed which estimates the number of outliers in a network by evaluating the redundancy contributions of the detected observations. In this way, a number of potential outliers can be identified and eliminated in each iteration of an adjustment. This leads to higher efficiency in data snooping of geodetic networks. The technique is illustrated with some numerical examples.

    Notes: Studies problems related to modelling, control and monitoring ofcirculatory systems with an artificial heart. First, presents apulsatile model of cardiovascular systems. This model has awell-grounded physiological basis and includes several reflex controlsystems, such as baroreceptor feedback loops, and nonlinearities ofvessel compliance, which are inherent in the body. In addition, developsa model of an artificial heart. Based on these models, proposes a pulsefrequency modulated (PFM) control scheme for the circulatory systemswith an artificial heart. This scheme enables us to regulate the bloodpressure and volume of the circulatory systems properly. To monitor thebehaviour of the circulatory systems with an artificial heart anobservation scheme is finally presented, with which the blood pressureand stroke volumes of the circulatory system can be estimated by usingonly the measurements of the driving pressure of the artificial heart.

    Notes: : Different starches often coexist in food systems. Starch retrogradation is the primary reason for quality deterioration of a food system during storage. This article addresses the retrogradation behaviors of several starch mixtures containing normal rice starch (NRS). Potato starch, tapioca starch, waxy corn starch, hydroxypropylated potato starch, hydroxypropylated tapioca starch, and acetylated tapioca starch were mixed with NRS. Starch suspensions were gelatinized and the relative solid content, (S′) measured by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance, was used to characterize the retrogradation behavior of starch systems. The retrogradation behaviors of starch mixtures can be divided into two categories according to the additive or non-additive nature of S′, for which the concept “regional moisture content” was introduced.
