Notes: Summary Distribution of soil microbial biomass and potentially mineralizable nitrogen (PMN) in long-term tillage comparisons at seven sites in the United States varied with tillage management and depth in soil. Microbial biomass and PMN levels of no-tillage soils averaged 54% and 37% higher, respectively, than those in the surface layer of plowed soil. Biomass and PMN levels were greatest in the surface 0 to 7.5-cm layer of no-tillage soil and decreased with depth in soil to 30 cm. Biomass and PMN levels of plowed soil, however, were generally greatest at the 7.5 –15 cm depth. Microbial biomass levels were closely associated with soil distributions of total C and N, water content, and water-soluble C as influenced by tillage management. Potentially mineralizable N levels in soil were primarily associated with distributions of microbial biomass and total N. Absolute levels of PMN and microbial biomass and the relative differences with tillage management were dependent on climatic, cropping, and soil conditions across locations. The additional N contained in soil biomass and PMN in the surface 0–7.5 cm of no-tillage compared with plowed soils ranged from 13 to 45 and 12 to 122 kg N/ha, respectively, for 6 of 7 locations. Fertilizer placement below the biologically rich surface soil layer and/or rotational tillage may improve short-term nitrogen use efficiency and crop growth on reduced-tillage soils.

Notes: [Auszug] BORDES'S numerical methods of describing and classifying complex assemblages of flint artefacts have provided a new approach to Palaeolithic studies. These methods describe assemblages by the percentage of occurrence of a fixed range of types and classify them on this basis1. However, the ...

Notes: Cervical cytology is mainly part of the National Screening Programme. However, it is not uncommonly used as a diagnostic tool in patients with abnormal vaginal bleeding. We present a case of a middle-aged female who had a normal screening history but defaulted on her last two smears. She subsequently complained of abnormal, vaginal bleeding. A cervical smear was taken and was reported as showing severe/?invasive squamous carcinoma. This was confirmed by histology. Shortly afterwards she presented with facial nerve palsy. In the course of the investigations, a biopsy was taken from the tympanic membrane and this showed involvement by metastatic squamous carcinoma. Although cervical cancer is recognized for its ability to metastasize to various organs, to our knowledge, this is the first case of reported cervical metastases to the tympanic membrane. This case highlights the importance of the screening programme in detecting cervical cancer, the use of cervical cytology as a diagnostic tool in pathology of the cervix and the ability of cervical cancer to metastasize to unusual anatomical sites.

Notes: A Bragg reflector consisting of a 25-period MnZnSSe/ZnSSE Bragg stack is reported. The II–VI semiconductor structure was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a GaAs (100) epilayer. Structural characterization of the Bragg reflector was performed with double crystal x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. These studies indicated that the epitaxial II–VI structure, whose total thickness is about 2150 nm, remains pseudomorphic with the GaAs substrate. The Bragg stack has a maximum reflectance of 81% at 468 nm. This result shows that fabrication of high reflectance mirrors from epitaxial ZnSe-based II–VI compounds is possible in spite of relatively small refractive index differences between constituent II–VI layers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ optical reflectometry at the wavelength of 488 nm was employed to control the growth of MgZnSSe/ZnSSe Bragg mirror stacks for the blue-green spectral region. 10- and 20-period layer structures of MgZnSSe/ZnSSe were grown on GaAs (100) epilayers by molecular beam epitaxy. A room-temperature peak reflectance of 86% was obtained for the 20-period structure at the central wavelength of 474 nm. The results show that, in general, in situ optical monitoring of growth is a viable and simple method for real-time layer thickness control of MgZnSSe/ZnSSe quarter-wave stacks. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The epitaxial lift-off technique is applied to II–VI based structures. Epilayers of 255 nm thickness containing quantum wells are lifted off their substrates and redeposited onto polyimide coated GaAs. The technique has also been applied to II–VI samples onto which dielectric films had been deposited. Photoluminescence measurements show that the material quality has not been degraded during the processing. The success of this technique with II–VI's opens up many possibilities for the integration of these materials with metals and dielectrics in vertical structure devices. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
