Notes: Summary The present study examined the regional vascular effects (radioactive microspheres) of converting-enzyme inhibition (captopril, 1mg/kg) and calcium-antagonism (diltiazem, 1 mg/kg) in a rat model of cardiac failure due to large myocardial infarction (n=18, infarct size 40% of the left ventricle) both at rest and during submaximal tread-mill exercise. Diltiazem increased renal, gastrointestinal, coronary and cutaneous blood flow at rest by 29%, 28%, 26% and 37% (p〈0.05 each) and enhanced skeletal muscle blood flow during exercise by 16% (p〈0.05). Captopril improved primarily renal and coronary blood flow at rest (by 59% and 23%, respectively,p〈0.05) and reduced vascular resistance in the gastrointestinal bed by 25% (p〈0.05) without significant effects in other circulatory beds. We conclude that the regional vascular effects elicited by converting-enzyme inhibition and calcium antagonism differ considerably in this animal model of congestive heart failure and may be clinically important. The favourable regional vascular profile of diltiazem deserves further clinical investigation.

Notes: Summary Although beneficial acute hemodynamic effects of calcium antagonists in heart failure have been reported, their use in this setting is still controversial because of the negative inotropic effects produced by these agents. The direct actions of calcium antagonists, that is direct depression of myocardial contractility and coronary and peripheral vasodilatation, are modulated by systemic hypotension-induced baroreceptor activation of autonomic reflexes. Thus, at clinically relevant dosages, the baroreceptor-mediated cardiac stimulatory effects may counterbalance or override the direct negative-inotropic effects, as usually observed with nifedipine or diltiazem. By contrast, with verapamil significant depression of contractility may occur. Newer calcium antagonists with higher vasoselectivity such as nisoldipine or felodipine may be particularly interesting in the setting of congestive heart failure because of pronounced arterial vasodilatation and their additional effects on coronary blood flow, LV-regional wall motion and diastolic function and peripheral blood flow distribution with negligible myocardial effects. Due to their marked vasodilatating properties, newer derivatives may be advantageous in the treatment of heart failure due to coronary artery disease and hypertension. Although limited data concerning long-term efficacy are available, preliminary studies suggest long-term benefit in selected patients. It appears that verapamil should not be used for vasodilator therapy of severe heart failure, since deterioration of LV function may occur.

Notes: Abstract Enzyme marker analysis has become a valuable tool in leukemia research, especially as a part of the so-called multiple marker analysis which combines several disciplines for characterization of leukemia cells. In this study the qualitative activities of three enzyme markers were determined in leukemic cells from pediatric patients with acute leukemias: acid phosphatase (E.C. 3.1.3.2), carboxylic esterase (E.C. 3.1.1.1) and hexosaminidase (E.C. 3.2.1.30). The leukemia subtypes displayed different types of isoenzyme patterns. No additional isoenzyme was found that was not observed in normal blood cells, nor a single isoenzyme specific for a leukemia subtype. The biochemical profiles illustrated the existence of subsets in cALL, T-ALL and AML. The enzymologic polymorphism and the immunologic heterogeneity seen in leukemia subclasses have led together to an extended classification scheme of leukemias as well as to model schemes of normal hematopoietic cell differentiation. Despite former and constantly published assumptions there are still no specific markers of leukemia cells.

Notes: Under workplace conditions, it is difficult to prove the influence of skin lesions on skin penetration by chemical substances. The aim of the present study was to show whether systemic exposure to glycol ether increases due to lesions of the skin in printing workers. 28 male printers, exposed to 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethanol (BEE), were interviewed about the workplace exposure by a standardized questionnaire. The systemic exposure in printers was determined by biological monitoring of the main metabolite of BEE butoxyethoxyacetic acid (BEAA) in urine. Furthermore, clinical examination of the skin, transepidermal water loss, capacitance and skin surface pH measurements were carried out. Erythema and scaliness were the most important factors showing an effect on dermal absorption. The mean urinary BEAA excretions for printers with skin lesions on the hands were higher (20.62 mg/l for scaliness and 14.40 mg/l for erythema) compared to that for printers without detectable skin lesions (12.08 mg/l for scaliness and 13.03 mg/l for erythema). Bioengineering measurements to predict skin strain and percutaneous absorption were only supportive. We were able to show that by using a multiple spectrum of methods an enhancement of percutaneous absorption of BEE could be demonstrated in workers with skin lesions.

Notes: We study the photocurrent of quantum capacitor devices consisting of an electron wire array induced in an undoped AlAs/GaAs heterojunction with an interdigitated gate electrode. The photocurrent measures the collective one-dimensional intersubband resonance in the electron wires. The new technique to measure fundamental excitations of nanostructured electron systems yields strong signals even at very low electron densities so that only a single one-dimensional subband is occupied. Compared to previous far-infrared transmission studies the length and the number of the wires averaged in our technique is substantially smaller. The intersubband resonance in our devices is tunable in a wide range of energies up to 10.5 meV.

Notes: The dc I–V characteristic of a triple-barrier resonant tunneling diode (RTD) integrated in a bowtie antenna and driven by THz radiation displays up to five additional resonant tunneling channels. These channels appear as additional peaks in the I–V characteristic whose voltage positions vary linearly with frequency in the investigated range between ν=1.0 and 3.4 THz. We attribute these peaks to photon-assisted tunneling processes corresponding to absorption and stimulated emission of up to three photons. The experiments suggest that such a device can be utilized to detect and generate THz radiation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
