Notes: Conclusion Oxidation by galactose oxidase followed by reduction with tritiated sodium borohydride appears to be an excellent tool to label a protein. By this technique, we have labeled an histamine blocking protein. We try now to modify the experimental conditions in order to have a clear cut between specific and non specific binding of this protein to guinea-pig ileum.

Notes: Summary A method for measuring proteins in low concentrations applying the zone immunoelectrophoresis assay is reported. The low detection limit makes it possible to measure α1-acid glycoprotein in rat serum and also to quantify the secretion of this protein after concentration of the incubation media containing less than 107 isolated rat hepatocytes. The method is simple and consumes very small quantities of antiserum.

Notes: Abstract The effect of growth temperature on the evolution of kinetic parameters and yields was determined for Candida lipolytica cultures with ntetradecane as substrate, in a temperature range of 18°C to 30°C, which is below the critical growth temperature in order to work only in the activation zone of these parameters. In such a culture limited by substrate transfer, growth rate depends on biological rates, related to microorganisms characteristics, and diffusional rates, related to mass transfer. The effect of temperature thus depends on the limiting step. The activation energy, calculated from exponential growth rate determinations is $$E_{\mu _m } = 63,600{\text{ }}J/mole$$ . When the activation energy is calculated from the maximal rate of cell production (determined at the growth curve's inflexion point), it's found to be E μX=71,200 J/mole in the 18°C–24°C range, and E μX=28,000 J/mole in the 24°C–30°C range. The latter one is characteristic of a diffusion-limited process. Above 24°C, growth is controlled by substrate-transfer, as physiological potentialities are preferentially increased with temperature than diffusional ones: 24°C is thus the transition temperature T t from physiological to diffusional limitation. The apparent yield is almost constant, over the 18°C to 30°C temperature range, although maintenance coefficients are very dependent on temperature. The activation energies related to maintenance coefficients for alkane and oxygen respectively are $$E_{m_s } = 82,500{\text{ }}J/mole$$ and $$E_{mO_{\text{2}} } = 86,200{\text{ }}J/mole$$ . The m s/mO 2 ratio is about 3 (g/g), whereas that, for a strict oxidation reaction of n-tetradecane ought to be 3.47 (g/g). A satisfactory correlation, relating maintenance coefficients to the maximal growth rate of yeast, is given.

Notes: Summary Eight patients, who underwent neurosurgery for various supratentorial lesions presented unexplained impairment of consciousness during the first post-operative days. These states ranged from stupor to deep coma, and two patients had an emergency re-exploration. All these patients were receiving the usual dosage (1000 to 1500 mg per day) of Valproic acid (VPA). The treatment had been initiated either several weeks or months previously in 4 cases, and was thus well tolerated, or the day before surgery in the 4 other cases. EEG recordings displayed diffuse abnormalities, delta waves and/or high voltage triphasic complexes, that led to the diagnosis of VPA intolerance and drug withdrawal. Then full clinical recovery and EEG clearing occurred within 1 to 5 days. VPA intolerances are welknown but remain exceptional, about 1 case per 100.000. In our neurosurgical population, however, the rate was higher, approximately 2%. Wide areas of blood brain barrier destruction may contribute to the higher frequency of this easily reversible cause of post-operative stupor or coma.

Notes: Abstract We have developed a new method for measuring tilt bias angles in spatially uniform and nonuniform thin films of nematic liquid crystals. The method employs modulation ellipsometry, based on the use of an exponentially decaying light wave to probe the boundary layer. Oscillations of the director of the liquid crystal, which are induced by the flexoelectric torque, are excited with an external periodic field. A periodic variation of the ellipticity of the light wave reflected from the interface is detected at both the first and second harmonics of the exciting electric field. When these two Fourier components of the electrooptic response are known, it is possible to calculate both the tilt bias angle θ0 of the director and the dynamic deviation δ0 of the tilt bias angle. The angles θ0 and δ0 measured by this method on the surface of an electrode (ITO) and on the surface of a ferroelectric film (a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene), oriented in a corona discharge, were equal to θ 0=5.1°, δθ=0.5° and θ0=89°, δθ=0.06°, respectively.

Notes: Summary Stress-strain measurements of layer compression in a smecticA liquid crystal are presented. We describe in the instantaneous response a linear regime and a nonlinear behaviour, above the layer undulation instability. The time dependence of the observed stress relaxation is measuredvs. the applied strain. This plastic behavior is discussed in relationship with the observed more or less permanent layer distorsions.

Notes: We present a nonempirical model Hamiltonian of the valence bond type for singly and doubly charged clusters of atoms which have a s2(1S) ground state configuration. This model includes delocalization, instantaneous polarization energies, interaction between induced dipoles, and Coulombic repulsion of the holes in doubly charged clusters; up to four-body terms are included. The model is applied to magnesium clusters. Comparisons with ab initio (configuration interaction) calculations show overall agreement for singly charged clusters, whereas doubly charged clusters suffer from the lack of collective p-type contributions in model calculations. For singly charged magnesium clusters, ground state geometries are found to be neutral atoms surrounding either a charged atom or a charged dimer. Considerations of shape and energy show that clusters are easily obtained by aggregation processes and analysis of vertical ionization potentials shows that they can also be obtained by direct ionization of neutral species.

Notes: The equilibrium structure and energy of Xe+n clusters (n≤9, n=13 and 19) have been calculated using a model (of excitonic type) hamiltonian extracted from the potential curves of Xe+2 and Xe2, and including spin–orbit coupling and three-body interactions between instantaneous induced dipoles. Due to the p nature of the valence AO, the hole delocalization proceeds along one direction but it rapidly becomes less favorable to delocalize the hole on an nth atom than to polarize a neutral atom situated around the (n−1) atoms linear cluster. Xe+3 and Xe+4 are therefore linear and generate two families of heavier clusters, obtained by polarizing neutral atoms situated on crowns around the axis of the Xe+3 or Xe+4 ionized cores. Each crown may bear up to five atoms and there are two crowns around Xe+3, three crowns around Xe+4, Xe+13, and Xe+19 appearing then as compact structures with filled crowns. Rules are given for the filling of the neutral crowns. The two families (Xe+3 supported and Xe+4 supported) are nearly degenerate in energies with numerous isomers. The calculated adiabatic ionization potential for Xe19 (10.1 eV) is in good agreement with the observed value for the bulk (9.8 eV).
