Notes: [Auszug] ABOUT a year ago you published a short article by Mr. Francis Galton (April 11, 1895, vol. li. p. 570), in which he urged the desirability of making careful records of all cases of “sports” sudden variations in domesticated animals, &c. Two such sports having arisen recently under my ...

Notes: [Auszug] SEVERAL communications relating to the so-called “death-feigning instinct” of certain reptiles have appeared in the columns of NATURE during the last few months. The following observations bearing on this question may be of sufficient interest to justify publication. They refer to a species of ...

Notes: Summary The diagnostic value of quantitatively measuring fecal chymotrypsin and trypsin activity by using specific substrates has been studied. Objective evaluation of pancreatic exocrine function was accomplished with the pancreozymin-secretin test. A close correlation was indicated between stool chymotrypsin concentration and the functional capacity of the exocrine pancreas. All patients in this study with severe and moderate functional impairment, as determined with the pancreozymin-secretin test, exhibited stool chymotrypsin values below 74 µg./gm. An additional group with mild pancreatic exocrine insufficiency had values between 74 and 100 µg./gm. Fecal chymotrypsin assay by the technic described promises to be most helpful in screening for pancreatic disease. Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency can be virtually excluded as a diagnostic possibility when several stool specimens from the same patient show a chymotrypsin concentration greater than 100 µg./gm. Patients in the clearly abnormal range, with fecal chymotrypsin values below 74 µg./gm., and those in the questionable range, with values of 74–100 µg./gm. in 2 or more determinations, should be further investigated by duodenal intubation and the collection of pancreatic secretions following hormonal stimulation. In contrast to the encouraging results obtained with chymotrypsin determinations, trypsin values in our study showed no significant correlations with pancreatic functional capacity.

Notes: Summary Methods of discrimination between different chemical forms of trace elements in natural waters and for their separation are discussed and results given for their application to Rhine water. Various methods of trace element separation are presented: separation from sea-water by adsorption on activated carbon in presence of complexing agents, separation from mineral waters by use of the chelating cellulose exchanger Hyphan, separation of actinide elements by co-precipitation with barium sulphate, co-precipitation from waste water with hydrous ferric oxide and with ferric phosphate.

Description / Table of Contents: Tetraphenylarsonium tetrachlorodiazidotitanate(IV); Preparation, I. R. Spectrum, and Crystal Structure of (AsPh4)2 [TiCl4(N3)2]The title compound was obtained from TiCl4 and AsPh4N3 in CH2C12 solution in form of orange crystals. Its crystal structure was determined with X-ray diffraction data and was refined to a residual index of R = 4.5% (1283 observed, independent reflexions). (AsPh4)2 [TiCl4 (N3)2] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with four formula units per unit cell. In the [TiCl4(N3)2]2- ion the two azido groups occupy trans-position, their conformation gives the ion C2 symmetry. The i. r. spectrum was recorded and assigned.
