Notes: Abstract An anti-inflammatory factor (AIF) was highly purified from normal bovine serum. The purified AIF was a polysaccharide which was formed from a low molecular substance Pro-AIF by macromolecularization. AIF showed potent inhibitory activities against carrageenin induced edema in rats and PMN-leucocyte chemotaxis. It showed no inhibition in cutaneous reaction with serotonin, bradykinin or a mediator releaser compound 48/80. No inhibition was also observed in thermally induced pain, reversed passive Arthus reaction and adjuvant polyarthritis in rats. With these results, the role of AIF in inflammation was discussed.

Notes: Abstract: Objective and Design: IL-18 shares functional properties with IL-12, which induces an elevation of histidine decarboxylase (HDC) activity in mouse tissues. Therefore, we examined the effects of IL-18 and IL-18+IL-12 on HDC activity.¶Methods: IL-18, IL-12 or IL-18+IL-12 was intraperitoneally injected into BALB/c and C3H/HeN mice and their HDC activities were measured.¶Results: IL-18, at effective antitumour doses, induced HDC activity in lung, liver, spleen and bone. The IL-18-induced HDC elevation was more rapid than that induced by IL-12. As with IL-12, repeated injections of IL-18 produced more HDC activity than a single injection. Repeated injections of IL-18+IL-12 induced serious illness and produced marked HDC activity. However, an inhibitor of HDC did not prevent the illness.¶Conclusions: IL-18 may be involved in the stimulation of histamine synthesis during the course of immune responses, though an elevation of HDC activity is not itself the direct cause of the serious illness induced by IL-18+IL-12.¶

Notes: Summary The effects of the inhibition of steroidogenesis by trilostane on oocyte maturation were examined by studying spontaneous maturation and fertilization in vitro. 10−6 M trilostane had no influence on the meiotic process, whether the oocytes were naked or not. At a concentration of 10−6 M and 10−7 M trilostane, low normal pronuclear formation and high polyspermy were found during in vitro fertilization. However, no retarded male pronuclear development could be detected in the trilostane-treated group. Thus, steroid producing activity within ova is apparently necessary to prevent multiple sperm penetration, but it has no effect on meiosis or the action of the so-called male pronucleus growth factor (MPGF).

Notes: Summary Thirty-seven cases of central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) with miscellaneous underlying disorders were found in 1,000 consecutive autopsies, of which 636 brains were examined. The incidence of CPM in this study was 5.8%. The frequent underlying disorders were malignant neoplasms (43%), chronic pulmonary disease (27%), and chronic renal failure cases under dialysis treatment (14%). Fatty liver cirrhosis due to alcohol abuse was recognized in only one CPM case. In the present study, 78% of the CPM cases revealed either electrolyte disturbances or abnormal blood gas data, such as marked deviation of base excess and/or of serum pH in 62.5%, hyper- or hypochloremia (above 115 mEq/l, below 95 mEq/l) in 47%, hyper- or hyponatremia (above 150 mEq/l, below 130 mEq/l) in 25%, marked hypoxemia (less than 40 mmHg) in 12.5% and hypokalemia (below 3.0 mEq/l) in 9% of the CPM cases. The myelinolytic changes were localized in the basis pontis in 14 of 37 CPM cases and in the basis pontis and the cerebral and/or cerebellar white matter (extrapontine myelinolysis) in the remaining 23 cases. The extrapontine changes were also closely related to the electrolyte disturbances or the abnormal blood gas data. The results of this study suggest that myclin and oligodendrocytes in the basis pontis and cerebral and cerebellar white matter are vulnerable to abnormal levels of serum electrolytes and also to marked changes of the acid-base balance.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The occurrence of anti-HBcAg antibodies in the blood as determined by indirect immunofluorescence and its relation to the occurrence of HBsAg in the cytoplasm and of HBcAg and IgG in the nuclei of hepatocytes were studied in the following groups of patients (total of 123 biopsies): I. 64 HBAg-negative patients with various liver diseases; II. 51 HBAg-positive patients without therapeutical immunosuppression (6 acute hepatitis, 10 nonspecific reactive and 10 chronic persistent hepatitis, 19 chronic aggressive hepatitis, 6 „Hippie“-hepatitis); III. 8 kidney transplant recipients. It could be shown that nuclear IgG is found only if both parameters can be demonstrated at the same time: HBcAg in liver cell nuclei and anti-HBcAg antibodies in the serum in titers higher than 1:64. Accordingly, all types of hepatitis with excess formation of nuclear HBcAg (early phase of acute hepatitis, chronic aggressive hepatitis and chronic non-aggressive forms with generalized core formation, i.e. carrier state or chronic persistent hepatitis of the HBc type) may show nuclear fluorescence for IgG. All forms of hepatitis B without detectable core formation (acute hepatitis in the elimination phase, chronic nonaggressive hepatitis with isolated HBsAg expression, i.e. carrier state or chronic persistent hepatitis of the HBs type, posthepatitic phase) do not present nuclear IgG despite eventual anti-HBcAg formation. Finally, lack of anti-HBcAg or very low titers associated with lack of IgG in hepatocytic nuclei do not exclude generalized core formation in liver cell nuclei in chronic persistent hepatitis of effectively immunosuppressed patients. Although the demonstration of nuclear IgG has several diagnostic and prognostic consequences in common with the demonstration of HBcAg, a specific search for the core antigen in the tissue is needed for the correct appraisal of the HBcAg- and HBsAg tissue expression pattern and the associated disease.

Notes: Abstract Biological characteristics of daytime surface swarming of Euphausia pacifica were investigated. Swarms in the Sanriku coastal waters consisted almost exclusively of mature individuals and seemed to be related to breeding behavior. Although maturation of ovarian eggs occurred both at the beginning and the end of the swarming period, females with attached spermatophore were most frequent at the end of the period. Since stomachs of swarming individuals were nearly empty throughout this period, swarming behavior was probably not related to feeding. Swarming individuals did not seem to be transported to the surface by vertical water movement caused by tidal streams, because the daily catch per boat did not differ between spring and neap tides.

Notes: Semi-Solid metal (SSM) processing is now considered a commercially successfulmanufacturing route producing millions of near net shape parts per annum for the automotiveindustry. Although semi-solid process is currently widely used as a manufacturing process whichproduces near net-shape metal component, the processes those used for the preparation ofsemi-solid slurry still take a great deal of time, energy and money. Cup cast method – recentlydeveloped by the authors – is able to make semi-solid slurry preparation as easy as pouring waterfrom a pitcher into drinking glass. In this method globular solid particles are prepared by controllingthe turbulence and heat distribution in the melt through pouring instead of applying certain externalstirring forces, in other common method. In the current study, cup cast method applied to Al-A356alloy using simple cylinder. Vital factors of this method were optimized by investigatingmicro-structures

Notes: The A˜ 3Πi←X˜ 3Σ− electronic transition of a carbon-chain molecule CCS has been observed for the first time by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The species was generated with a pulsed discharge of 0.5% C2H2 and 0.5% CS2 diluted in Ar via a pulsed supersonic jet. A number of bands in the 690–675 nm and 600–615 nm regions (14 500–14 800, 16 200–16 600 cm−1) were observed and assigned to those of CCS using ground state combination differences. Three of the bands in each region were found to belong to the three A˜ 3Πi spin-orbit components of the A˜ 3Πi←X˜ 3Σ− transition (Tv=14 662.777(4) and 16 423 cm−1), and an effective set of rotational constants for the upper states were obtained. The higher energy band was heavily perturbed, preventing the determination of effective constants for this band. These bands have been tentatively assigned as two successive bands in the A˜ 3Πi(n,0,0) progression with a resultant effective value of 1760 cm−1 for the A˜ 3Πi ν1 vibrational fundamental. Dispersed fluorescence spectra from the A˜ 3Πi←X˜ 3Σ− band of CCS have also been observed, yielding definitive experimental information on the vibrational structure of the X˜ 3Σ− ground state for the first time. The three harmonic frequencies were determined to be 1708.2(40) cm−1, 862.5(19) cm−1, and 269.3(13) cm−1 for ω1 (CC stretch), ω2 (CS stretch), and ω3 (CCS bend), respectively. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
