Intramuscular (i.m.) administration of the neuroleptics chlorpromazine, haloperidol and spiperone at doses ranging from 0.1 to 0.4 mg/kg in male rabbits induced a dose-dependent penile erection.2. The i.m. administration of the α1-adrenoceptor antagonists prazosin and bunazosin (0.1–0.4 mg/kg), induced a dose-dependent penile erection. However, that of the peripheral dopamine receptor antagonist domperidone (0.4–4.0 mg/kg) and the dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine (0.1–1.0 mg/kg) did not. Penile erection was not induced by i.m. injection of chlorpromazine in combination with intrapenile administration of the α1-adrenoceptor agonist methoxamine.3. Penile erection was induced by the administration of chlorpromazine (0.25–1.00 mg/body) into the lateral cerebral ventricle. At a low dose, however, the administration of chlorpromazine into the lateral ventricle induced a less notable penile erection than that induced intramuscularly.4. Penile erection was induced by i.m. injection of the ganglionic blocker hexamethonium (5–20 mg/ kg). When chlorpromazine was given after pretreatment with hexamethonium, penile erection was more notable than that induced by either drug given alone.5. These results suggest that neuroleptics could act locally in the penile structure to cause penile erection by α1-adrenoceptor-blocking actions.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of adrenalectomy (Adx), SKF 525-A, phenobarbital (PB), and diethyl maleate (DEM) on the acute toxicity of fenitrothion was investigated in male rats by assessing the degree of plasma cholinesterase activity. PB, 60 mg/kg/day for 3 days, exerted no protective effect on the toxicity of fenitrothion (100 mg/kg, p.o.) given 24 h after the last injection. In adrenalectomized and SKF 525-A-pretreated rats, the toxicity of fenitrothion was lower than that of the controls. Fenitrothion toxicity was increased by administration of DEM (1 ml/kg), which depletes hepatic glutathione (GSH) levels. In vitro, the rates of fenitrothion decomposition and fenitrooxon formation by microsomes were markedly affected by PB, SKF 525-A and Adx. The decomposition of fenitrooxon by the microsomal fraction and GSH-dependent decomposition of fenitrooxon by the soluble fraction were not affected by PB, SKF 525-A and Adx pretreatment. The GSH-dependent decomposition of fenitrothion and fenitrooxon was increased by addition of GSH to the incubation mixture. The present results indicate that the GSH-dependent metabolic pathway plays an important role in the detoxication of fenitrothion.

    Notes: Abstract  We have previously reported an 8-year-old girl with lipoprotein glomerulopathy. Assessment of serum apolipoprotein E (apo E) in this patient showed a discrepancy between phenotype and genotype, suggesting that she may have a variant of apo E. The present report concerns our analysis of DNA sequences of the apo E gene in the patient: nine base pairs were found to be deleted from exon 4. This mutation would appear to encode a new apo E variant lacking three amino acids. This variant may be associated with the pathogenesis of lipoprotein glomerulopathy.

    Notes: Abstract A method of producing ultra-fine silicon powder is described. The most probable particle size produced by this method was estimated to be about 30 nm by TEM observation and X-ray diffraction. The powder was produced by an arc plasma method. This method is quite feasible for bulk continuous production of ultra-fine powder. Mechanisms of the production of the powder are also discussed. The principal mechanism for this ultra-fine powder production is attributed to the increase of the partial pressure of nitrogen (or hydrogen) gas by an arc plasma.

    Notes: Abstract A direct method of producing ultra-fine nitride and carbide powders of 20 to 40 nm by arc plasma in a controlled atmosphere (with ammonia or methane gas) is described. The powders produced were SiC, TiC, WC (+W2C), AIN and Si3N4. Other nitrides and carbides may also be produced using this method. Special attention was paid to the production conditions of silicon nitride.

    Description / Table of Contents: Der Einfluß der irreguläaren chemischen Struktur auf Schmelzpunkt, Dichte und Kristallstruktur von 6-66- und 6-68- Copolyamiden wurde untersucht. Die Abhängigkeit des Schmelzpunktes von der Zusammensetzung der Copolyamide weist ein Minimum auf. Die hinsichtlich der unterschiedlichen Molekülmassen der Comonomere korrigierte Dichte hat ein Minimum bei ähnlicher Zusammensetzung. Die Röntgenbeungungswinkel der beiden Hauptreflexe, (200) und (202/002) für Polyamid 6 bzw. (100) und (110/010) für die Polyamide 66 und 68, nähern sich in den Copolyamiden. Bei schmelzkristallisierten 6-66-Copolyamiden war die Annähereung der Reflexe besonders ausgeprägt, und die Kristallstruktur des Copolyamids mit 30 Mol-% des 66-Monomers liegt sehr nahe bei einer pseudo-hexagonalen Struktur. Beim Tempern in kochendem Wasser werden die Kristallite leicht in die α-Form überführt.
    Notes: The effect of irregularity of chemical structure on melting points, densities and crystal structures was studied for 6-66 and 6-68 copolyamides. All copolyamides showed V-shaped melting point vs. composition curves. The densities, corrected for the difference in molecular weights between comonomers, also showed a minimum at similar compositions with respect to melting points. X-ray diffraction angles of the two main reflections, (200) and (202/002) in polyamide 6, and (100) and (110/010) in polyamides 66 and 68, respectively, approached in the copolymers. In melt-crystallized 6-66 copolyamides, the approach of the reflections was especially prominent, and the crystal structure of the copolyamide containing 30 mole-% of the 66 monomer was rather close to pseudo-hexagonal. The crystallites are transformed easily to the α from by annealing in boiling water.
