    Notes: This paper investigates the migration patterns of occupational groups. The results confirm previous analyses of the differences in movement behavior between occupations but, in addition, show that this variation is a function of the industrial sector of employment. The chief aim of the paper, however, is to uncover the geography of labor flows for different occupational groups using a principal components analysis of interstate flow matrices. The resulting migration regions are homogeneous with respect to the movement behavior of particular classes or labor in each state. Results indicate that migration regions vary by occupation and industry and we argue that these differences reflect job information flows and regional employment structure for various classes of labor. The concluding remarks offer a number of additional avenues for research on occupational migration, and regions in general.

    Notes: Copper-containing nitrite reductases possess a trimeric structure where the catalytic Cu site, located at the monomer–monomer interface, resembles the catalytic sites of a number of Zn enzymes. Nitrite reductase from Alcaligenes xylosoxidans has optimum activity at pH 5.2 which decreases to a negligible level at pH 8. The structure of this nitrite reductase has previously been determined at pH 4.6. It has now been crystallized under new conditions at pH 8.5. Its crystallographic structure provides a structural explanation for the greatly reduced activity of the enzyme at high pH. Characterization of overexpressed protein in solution by EXAFS suggested that the protein lacked Cu in the catalytic type 2 Cu site and that the site was most probably occupied by Zn. Using the anomalous signals from Cu and Zn, the crystal structure revealed that the expressed protein was devoid of Cu in the catalytic site and that only a trace amount (〈10%) of Zn was present at this site in the crystal. Despite the close structural similarity of the catalytic site to a number of Zn enzymes, these data suggest that Zn, if it binds at the catalytic copper site, binds weakly in nitrite reductase.

    Notes: J. Edgar Hoover directed the Bureau of Investigation (BI), later renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation, from 1924 until his death in 1972. His autocratic style of management, self-mythologising habits, reactionary political opinions and accumulation of secret files on real, imagined and potential opponents have been widely documented. The views and methods he advocated have been variously attributed to values he absorbed as he grew up and to certain peculiarities of his personality. Most biographers trace his rapid rise to prominence in the BI to his aptitude for investigating alien enemies during World War I, and radicals during the subsequent Red Scare. He was centrally involved in the government's response to the alleged threat of Bolshevism in America, and, although he later denied it, he co-ordinated the notorious Palmer raids of January 1920, in which thousands of aliens were rounded up and several hundred were deported.

    Notes: Summary A patient is presented who developed nephrotoxicity after therapy with lomustine (CCNU) for astrocytoma of the brain. Only three other cases of lomustine nephrotoxicity have been reported, and all cases have been associated with cumulative drug doses of greater than 1,500 mg/m2. The clinical and pathologic features of lomustine nephrotoxicity are reviewed. It is recommended that cumulative doses of more than 1,200–1,400 mg/m2 lomustine be avoided because of the risk of nephrotoxicity.

    Notes: A filtering technique is proposed for on-line estimation of the temperature, monomer conversion, initiator conversion, and the entire molecular weight distribution in a batch methyl methacrylate polymerization reactor. The technique uses a detailed polymerization model combined with on-line measurements of conversion, temperature, and the molecular weight distribution, taken at different discrete time intervals. The polymerization model includes a chain-length-dependent termination rate constant which allows the prediction of the molecular weight distribution for common free-radical polymerization conditions. Comparisons between modeling and experimental results show that the polymerization model gives good predictions of the monomer conversion and the molecular weight distribution in the polymerization system. The performance of the estimation scheme is tested for cases of strong gel effect conditions leading to a bimodal molecular weight distribution, and poor initial conditions. Finally, off-line experimental data are used to test the algorithm under actual reactor operating conditions.

    Notes: A molecular weight distribution (MWD) estimator for batch methyl methacrylate solution polymerization is implemented experimentally for on-line control and estimation of the MWD. The estimator is based on an extended Kalman filter and provides current estimates of the entire MWD, reaction temperature, monomer conversion, and initiator conversion. It uses a detailed polymerization model, on-line monomer conversion measurements, temperature measurements, and periodic, time-delayed measurements of the MWD from an on-line size-exclusion chromatograph. The estimator is shown to perform well with several on-line MWD estimation experiments. Real-time feedback control of the molecular weight is presented by utilizing the on-line MWD information. Temperature, monomer-addition, and simultaneous temperature and monomer-addition control are investigated experimentally to achieve a specific constant weight-average molecular weight. The on-line feedback control is effective in rejecting realistic disturbances which deteriorate molecular weight control.
