    Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: Dehydrocurdione, a sesquiterpene isolated from zedoary, was tested for in vivo and in vitro antiinflammatory actions.¶Materials: Analgesic effect was tested in ICR mice by the acetic acid-induced writhing method. Antipyretic effect was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with baker's yeast. Antiinflammatory activities were tested in Wistar rats with carrageenan-induced paw edema and adjuvant-induced chronic arthritis. In vitro analyses included the capabilities to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity, and to scavenge free radicals as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).¶Results: Oral administration of dehydrocurdione (40 to 200 mg/kg) mitigated the writhing reflex induced by acetic acid and the fever elicited by baker's yeast. A higher dose (200 mg/kg) of dehydrocurdione was required to inhibit the carrageenan-induced paw edema. Oral administration of dehydrocurdione at 120 mg/kg/day for 12 days significantly reduced chronic adjuvant arthritis. Unlike indomethacin (IC50: 0.1 μM), dehydrocurdione showed minimal cyclooxygenase inhibition. However, dehydrocurdione (100 μM to 5 mM) significantly reduced free radical formation from hydrogen peroxide and ferrous iron determined by EPR spectrometry using 5,5′-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-N-oxide as a spin trap agent.¶Conclusion: In addition to the well-known effect of zedoary as a stomachic, dehydrocurdione, the major component of Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe has antiinflammatory potency related to its antioxidant effect.

    Notes: Abstract We have determined the MLT distribution and KpKP dependence of the ion upflow and downflow of the thermal bulk oxygen ion population based on a data analysis using the EISCAT VHF radar CP-7 data obtained at Tromsø during the period between 1990 and 1996: (1) both ion upflow and downflow events can be observed at any local time (MLT), irrespective of dayside and nightside, and under any magnetic disturbance level, irrespective of quiet and disturbed levels; (2) these upflow and downflow events are more frequently observed in the nightside than in the dayside; (3) the upflow events are more frequently observed than the downflow events at any local time except midnight and at any KP level and the difference of the occurrence frequencies between the upflow and downflow events is smaller around midnight; and (4) the occurrence frequencies of both the ion upflow and downflow events appear to increase with increasing KP level, while the occurrence frequency of the downflow appears to stop increasing at some KP level

    Notes: Summary To elucidate the mechanisms of organ specificity of cancer metastasis, rat ascites hepatoma AH7974F cells were injected into rat carotid artery. Tumors were found in the liver, but rarely in the brain. Analysis of proliferation-kinetics of tritiated thymidine-labeled tumor cells arrested in the brain and liver made it clear that tumor cells arrested in the brain remained viable, but ceased dividing, while almost all of the tumor cells arrested in the liver divided.

    Notes: Abstract This study was carried out in July 1989 and 1990 to confirm whether the neurotoxins of the red tide organism Chattonella marine contribute to the cardiac disorder and death of fish. Exposure of fish to C. marina red tide water significantly decreased the heart rate, presumably resulting in anoxia from reduced blood circulation in the gill. Since atropine restored the depressed heart rate, the cardiac disorder seemed to occur neurogenously in association with the intrinsic cardiophysiology of the fish. Neurotoxin fractions of C. marina and Gymnodinium sp. depolarized the vagal nerve of fish, and hence induced the reduction of heart rate. Depression of the heart rate in fish exposed to C. marina red tide water, thus, seemed to be caused by the neurotoxins of these organisms. Histological examination showed little branchial damage due to neurotoxin fractions.

    Notes: Abstract Examinations of the electrocardiogram of Pagrus major exposed to Chattonella marina, a planktonic organism causing red tide, were made to determine the physiological effects on fish. The heart rate decreased as a result of the extention in the interval between T and P waves. The decrease in heart rate with the extended intervals between T and P waves was also recognized in the condition of decreased dissolved oxygen. Also, the decrease in heart rate of the fish exposed to the red tide occurred while the fish was struggling. This reduction seems to be caused by the strong tension of the vagal nerve. Upon exposure to C. marina at high cell concentration, the heart beat at a very low frequency after 30 min. The very low heart rate is expected to limit seriously the oxygen uptake by the gill, because the cardiac output is probably very low in this situation.

    Notes: Abstract A new energy extraction scheme of a chemically pumped pulsed large-scale iodine laser based on a high-pressure pulsed singlet oxygen generator is proposed. In previous investigations only low-pressure oxygen generators have been considered. Since they require a high iodine density for an efficient amplifier operation, the lifetime of the stored energy is correspondingly small and thus only small-sized iodine amplifiers appear to be technically feasible. We found, however, that when the singlet oxygen is generated at high-pressure, the iodine density required can be considerably reduced so that the lifetime of the stored energy becomes sufficiently long to fill up large amplifier cells. A numerical model is developed and the extractable energy is theoretically estimated. It is shown that 0.2J/1·pass can be extracted when an input pulse of 20 ns duration (FWHM) and 1 J/cm2 fluence is fed into the amplifying medium.

    Notes: Abstract Plasma prolactin (PRL) response to synthetic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) was studied in 26 prepubertal and 19 pubertal children with constitutional short stature, 7 patients with Turner's syndrome and 10 patients with hyperthyroidism. The mean basal concentrations of plasma PRL did not differ among groups. In prepubertal children PRL responses to TRH were comparable in both sexes, while pubertal children plasma PRL levels after TRH in females were significantly higher (P〈0.05) than those in age-matched males. Plasma PRL levels after TRH in patients with Turner's syndrome were significantly higher (P〈0.05) than those in age-matched males, but were not significantly different from those in age-matched females. Plasma PRL response to TRH was markedly suppressed in patients with hyperthyroidism before treatment, but it returned to normal after treatment when patients became euthyroid. A significant correlation (P〈0.05) between peak concentrations of plasma PRL after TRH stimulation and plasma T3 but not T4 levels was observed. These data suggest that a sex difference in TRH-stimulated PRL secretion appears around puberty and that plasma PRL response to TRH is suppressed in children with hyperthyroidism. The magnitude of plasma PRL response to TRH is closely correlated with the severity of hyperthyroidism when judged by plasma T3 but not T4 concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract Mental retardation, hypogonadism, obesity, and abnormal blood sugar regulation were common findings in two siblings. In addition, the 17-year-old female patient showed short stature, muscular hypotonia in infancy, and small hands with tapering fingers suggesting Prader-Willi syndrome, and the 12-year-old male patient showed retinitis pigmentosa, normal height, and normal muscular tonicity suggesting Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome, though polydactyly was absent. Possible consideration was discussed.

    Notes: Summary  Haemorrhage due to cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) varies from massive, requiring urgent operations, to clinically silent. The present study was designated to identify factors influencing haematoma size, and the pathophysiological mechanisms of massive haemorrhage were studied. 55 patients with intracerebral haematomas due to supratentorial AVMs were included in this study. Angiographic and clinical findings were retrospectively evaluated in relation to haematoma size.  Statistical analysis demonstrated that small size and the presence of only one draining vein were high risk factors for massive haemorrhage. The haematoma volume in small AVMs (30±4 cm3) was significantly larger than in other AVMs (7±3 cm3) (p=0.0005). AVMs with only one draining vein were associated with massive haematoma volume as compared to AVMs with two or more draining veins (30±4 versus 11±3 cm3, p=0.0023).  Our previous study demonstrated that feeding artery pressure (FAP) was significantly higher in AVMs with haemorrhage than in those without, as was draining vein pressure (DVP), and FAP and DVP were inversely related to the number of draining veins and the size of the AVMs. Thus, in small AVMs and AVMs with only one draining vein, local increase in DVP may thus contribute to massive haemorrhage.
