Description / Table of Contents: Construction materials for chemical high-temperature and high-pressure plantsThe results of recent investigations into the development of high-temperature and high-pressure resistant materials for the chemical processing industry are reviewed. The materials are divided into those based on metals in general use and those based on non-conventional metals, ceramics or plastics. Of particular interest are new nickel alloys. Investigations into fibre-reinforced metals reveal the possibility of producing composite materials with excellent high-temperature properties. The authors also discuss interesting developments in the sphere of cermets and high-temperature plastics as well as with glass and graphite.

Notes: Abstract The fluoride content of aqueous and organic Purex process solutions can be determined with good reproducibility and accuracy. The method includes a distillation separation of fluoride and its subsequent electrometric determination using a fluoride-selective electrode. The analytical range covers 5 to 500 μg of fluoride per aliquot and the concentration limit is 5×10−5 M (1 ppm). Complexing cations like Al(III), Zr(IV), La(III), and U(VI) do not interfere.

Description / Table of Contents: NI-O-NEL 825 -A new corrosion -resistant alloy for the chemical industryThe application of the austenitic special steels available is subjected to limitations 1under oxidising and acid-reducing conditions,2In respect of fissuration through stress corrosion in chloride solutions, and3in respect of pitting corrosion in chloride solutions. It was to eliminate these shortcomings that NI-O-NEL 825 has been developed. The development work resulting in the finally adopted composition of the alloy is described. Apart from an improvement in the above-mentioned inadequate properties of the special steels, the the composition finally adopted yielded an alloy which, after welding, shows neither brittleness phenomena nor grain boundary corrosion. The mechanical properties of the alloy, its corrosion resistence and practical applications in industry are discussed.Special attention is paid to the corrosion resistence of the alloy to sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, sodium chloride, sea water, ammonium sulphate and various organic acids.
