Abstract The present article provides the results obtained in investigating the heat transfer crisis in the boiling of water in a vertical pipe for the case of forced motion of the steam-water mixture. The investigations were performed at a pressure of 150 atm abs in the range of mass velocities from 850 to 7000 kg/m2sec and of thermal loads of (0.46–1.65) × 106 kcal/m2hr. The mechanism of the development of the heat transfer crisis for an annular flow is described. Empirical formulas for the determination of critical thermal loads are recommended.
