    Notes: Summary We investigated the effects of recombinant human gamma interferon on the induction of HLA-DR expression by two human squamous cell carcinoma, three trichilemmoma, one eccrine carcinoma, two adenocarcinoma cell lines, and cultured human keratinocytes in vitro. None of eight epithelial cell lines or keratinocytes expressed HLA-DR without gamma interferon treatment. In contrast, pure gamma interferon (500 IU/ml, 72-h treatment) induced HLA-DR expression on 1/2 squamous cell carcinoma, 3/3 trichilemmoma, 2/2 adenocarcinoma cell lines, and 4/4 kerationcyte cell lines, as determined using a fluorescence-activated cell sorter. A maxillary squamous cell carcinoma line and an eccrine carcinoma cell line failed to express HLA-DR with gamma interferon treatment; however, the growth of cells was inhibited by gamma interferon treatment. By indirect immunoperoxidase techniques, tumor cells such as Bowen's disease and squamous cell carcinoma were found to express HLA-DR. Since HLA-DR expression has been shown to be important for various immune responses, these findings suggest that gamma interferon plays important roles in various immune-related skin diseases.

    Notes: Several monoclonal antibodies (MAB) have been produced using an eccrine carcinoma cell line as an immunogen. One such MAB, SKH1, reacted with both the secretory portion and coiled duct of the eccrine and with the secretory portion of apocrine gland. SKH1, however, did not react with myoepithelial cells, intradermal ducts of both types of sweat gland, or with other components of normal axillary skin including the epidermis and follicular apparatus. The reaction was strongest if the specimen was fixed with 80% methanol, and moderate on non-fixed or acid-alcohol-fixed specimens. Only weak reaction was obtained on cold acetone-fixed specimens, and reaction was negative with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. SKH1 reacted positively with the cytoskeleton of the eccrine carcinoma cell line, Colo-16 and MCF-7. Applied to pathological skin specimens, SKH1 reacted with the tumor cells of clear cell hidradenoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and extramammary Paget's disease. SKH1 also reacted with the tumor cells of meta-static adenocarcinomas arising from lung, breast and ovary. SKH1 did not react with the majority of tumor cells of eccrine poroma, but reacted with single–layered cells lining narrow ductal lumina. SKH1 did not react with epithelial cells lining cystic or ductal lumina of syringoma, but reacted moderately with the amorphous keratin–like substance filling the lumina. Immunoblot analysis revealed that SKH1 recognizes a 40 Kd sweat gland-associated antigen, and can be an aid to identifying tumors arising from sweat gland structures.

    Notes: Summary Cytokeratin expression was studied in human middle ear cholesteatoma lesions, using a variety of immunohistological techniques and a wide range of polyclonal antisera and monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin (CK) subgroups or individual CK polypeptides. The expression of the other cytoskeletal proteins, vimentin and desmin, was also investigated. Middle ear mucosa and epidermal tissues were used as reference tissues. Our investigations also included epithelial structures present in the cholesteatoma perimatrix and in dermal tissues. The results indicate that, compared with epidermal tissues, the expression profile of CKs in cholesteatoma matrix is representative of a hyperproliferative disease. Evaluating the presence of a marker of terminal keratinization - the 56.5 kD acidic CK no 10 - we found supportive evidence of a pronounced retardation of its expression, which did not parallel histological differentiation. In epidermal tissues, the first prickle cell layers are CK10 positive whereas in many cholesteatomas this finding was observed near the stratum granulosum only. Probing the early stages of keratinization -the 58 kD basic CK no 5 and the 50 kD acidic CK no 14 - we regularly observed an extended staining area in the cholesteatoma matrix. In epidermal reference tissues, only the basal and nearest suprabasal layers were convincingly labeled. As a rule, non-epidermal CKs did not belong to the cholesteatoma CK set. However, exceptions to that rule were noticed as a focal or more extended expression of one or more non-epidermal CKs in about half of the cases. Together with the extended CK5 topography, this is further evidence that CK expression is seriously affected by the diseased state. CK expression in the perimatrix is limited to mucous glands, either normal, atrophic or hyperplastic. CKs no 4, 5, 7, 14, 18 and 19, also displayed by middle ear mucosa, were consistently observed. Where ductal arrangements were present, CK10 was also detected, in analogy with the CK10 registration in ductal portions of mucous glands in the external ear canal skin. The absence of CK8 in mucous glands of the perimatrix, however, strongly differentiates these structures from the mucous gland acini and ducti in the external ear canal, where CK8 is systematically expressed. Vimentin staining was restricted to dendritic cells of the matrix (Langerhans cells) and to perimatrix fibroblasts, blood cells and vascular endothelium. Coexpression of CK and vimentin was not observed.

    Notes: Abstract Articles on sea-related topics such as ocean, fishery, crimes at sea, law of the sea, distress at sea and others were counted for journals in the fields supposedly comprising sea-related specialties such as policy/political science, law and its enforcement, agriculture, transportation, and operational research. The number of such articles was found very few in all the surveyed journals. The follow-up search was made for other journals of the same specialties, obtaining the same result. Further, the same result was found to hold for other issues of the journals published in different years: That is, this phenomenon was found stable for years. Its reasons were discussed, and some interpretation and their policy implications were presented.

    Notes: Abstract Technological resources are shown to be more concentrated to a few firms than economic wealth. To explain such concentrations, the self-multiplication process with cycle between the innovative and stagnant ages is modeled in terms of the stochastic process. This yields a family of new distributions which is named the ultra-Yule distribution. This new distribution which is quite skew is show to fit the real distributions of patents and of R & D expenditure in the Japanese industry better than the Yule distribution. The properties of this new distribution is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The references cited by papers in the four volumes of international journal titledMathematical Programming (Math. Prog.) published in 1997 were surveyed. The most frequently cited journal was found to be Math. Prog. itself. Generally, the cited references were found to be heavily concentrated on particular journals or books by particular publishers specialised in particular specialties. Despite the historical background having originated from mathematics and economics and having developed together with the development of business administration, works in these specialties were found to be rarely cited. The research field of mathematical programming was hereby judged to have formed its own closed specialty, having rather isolated itself from others in a self-sufficient way. Its shift from economic, regional or business planning to the experiment design or the engineering design was observed.
