    Notes: Abstract. The distribution of the glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored folate receptor (FR) in a diffuse pattern vs. functional clusters associated with caveolae has been debated. The equivocal nature of direct localization studies is due to possible experimental artifacts such as cross-linking of the protein by the antibody probes prior to fixation and alternatively the use of a disruptive fixation method. Such studies have also been complicated by the use of cells that vastly overexpress FR. In this study a monovalent probe, i.e., a biotinylated folate affinity analogue was used to covalently label FR. Cells expressing moderate levels of FR, i.e., JAR epithelial cells expressing FR-α and recombinant CHO fibroblasts expressing FR-β, were used. The affinity label and either caveolin or antigenic sites on FR were localized by electron microscopy using colloidal gold conjugated antibody probes post-embedding in the relatively permeable LR White resin. The method avoided both receptor cross-linking and early fixation steps and also enabled the use of transport permissive conditions while labeling FR at the cell surface. The results indicate that in steady-state FR is not significantly colocalized with caveolin. However, the receptor molecules occur predominantly in clusters, independent of cross-linking, providing a physical basis for the observed kinetics of receptor internalization and recycling during folate transport. Evidence is also presented to suggest that early mild fixation will disrupt the clustering of FR.

    Notes: This paper reports results of an experiment involving two-laser resonance-enhanced photoionization of benzene. The excitation sources were two frequency-doubled dye lasers. The first laser pumped the molecule to a selected vibronic level of its first excited singlet state (1B2u), from where it was ionized by a time-delayed pulse of the second laser. The ion yield depends on the intermediate vibronic state as well as on the wavelength of the ionizing laser. From the structures and intensities of the measured ion spectra we derived vibrational frequencies and molecular parameters of the ground electronic state of the ion to a remarkable accuracy. The contributions of autoionizing Rydberg levels to the ionization cross section can clearly be distinguished from direct ionization. Several resonance peaks were assigned to transitions to vibrational modes within these Rydberg states.

    Notes: Purpose - This paper reports on the development of a method for the prediction of clothing pressure of girdles on the human body. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper, we propose to use a standard mannequin dummy to measure the clothing pressure of girdles and from which to predict the pressure on the different human body. An improved mathematical programming method for numerical simulation of cloth wrinkling is investigated. Findings - In general, the prediction equations of the model are effective in estimating the clothing pressure on the human body from the clothing pressure on a standard mannequin dummy. Practical implications - The method may be used by the manufacturers of girdles to test their products on a dummy to see whether the pressure distribution is satisfactory to the targeted group of consumers. It can also be used by consumers to assess the suitability of girdles based on the estimated clothing pressure, which may be predicted from the pressure pre-tested on a dummy and the consumer's body characteristics. Originality/value - Direct measurement of clothing pressure on human body for the evaluation of pressure garments is time consuming, expensive. It is therefore desirable to predict the girdle's pressure instead of the direct measurement on human subjects. The method may be used by manufacturers of girdles as well as by consumers.

    Notes: Creases are marks that are created and left in a fabric during garment wear. Pressing is a process to flatten garment panels and sharpen garment edges and pleats. To minimize crease, the fabric should recover after pressing without creating a creased edge. Whereas, good pressing performance means the creased edge stays sharp after pressing. Good crease recovery and pressing performance appear contradictory. However, crease recovery and pressing performance are different as creases are formed during wear and pressing is carried out using pressing equipment such as iron, pressing machines, etc. The condition, i.e. temperature and humidity, under which the creases are formed in wear and pressing are very different. The latter has much higher temperature, pressure and humidity. This paper reports on an experimental investigation on the relationship between the crease recovery and pressing performance of wool and other fabrics. It was found that there are only generally weak to moderate relationships between the crease recovery as measured by the Shirley Crease Recovery Tester and the pressing performance as measured by the Siro-Press Tester. The characteristics of wool fabrics, which have both good crease recovery and pressing performance, are identified. This study is a step towards fabric engineering.

    Notes: Girdles should be designed to beautify the lower body part of a woman without creating any discomfort and detrimental physiological effects. This paper reports on an experimental investigation into the relationship between the subjective tightness sensation and the clothing pressure of girdles. The subjective tightness sensation is a measure of the effectiveness of girdles, since too loose means the girdle is not effective in shaping the body and too tight means it is not comfortable and may have detrimental physiological effects. Based on this experimental investigation, the effect of clothing pressure on the tightness sensation is better understood and the optimum pressure distribution of girdles, which is an important criterion for product development and evaluation of girdles, is proposed.

    Notes: Purpose - The paper discusses the prediction of shirt patterns for different body sizes using multiple linear regression (MLR).Design/methodology/approach - A total of 29 pattern parameters from men's tailor-made shirt and 34 body parameters obtained from a body scanner were designed for analysis. MLR has been applied to examine the underlying relationship between shirt pattern parameters and body measurements.Findings– Compared with formulae from the pattern expert, the prediction of shirt pattern from MLR has been improved.Originality/value - The findings could help to predict pattern size with different body sizes more accurately.

    Notes: As a first step towards objective evaluation of garment appearance, the present work considered seams on three-dimensional surfaces which simulate actual garment surfaces. The geometric profiles of the 3-D seams were scanned using a laser scanner. 1-D and 2-D digital filters were applied to obtain pucker signals from the geometric profiles by removing "high frequency" components due to fabric surface texture and "low frequency" components due to garment silhouette and drape. The advantages and disadvantages of the 1-D and 2-D digital filters are compared. Four physical parameters are examined to see their relevance to the subjective pucker grade. It was found that log(s2), i.e. the logarithm of the variance of the heights of pucker signals, is the best set of physical parameters for the objective evaluation of seam pucker. In addition, latest attempts at capturing and analyzing 3D garment image using a Cyberware laser scanner and Surfacer software are reported.

    Notes: The concentrations of 27 trace elements in the basalt BIR-1, as well as in other mafic rock reference materials, have been determined by ICP-MS, using pure elemental solutions for external calibration and standard additions. Concentrations of rare earth elements in BIR-1 for the new ICP-MS data, agree with compiled values, and previous ID-SSMS results, whereas ICP-MS data on HFSE's are systematically higher by about 40% to 70% than ID-SSMS, but are consistent with data generated at other ICP-MS laboratories.
