    Notes: The leucocytes of plaice were examined and, at a morphological level, in addition to their response to the injection of carbon particles, they could be divided into four main types. Unlike previous reports, monocytes were seen. The neutrophil granules resembled the third granule type described in mammalian neutrophils. Monocytes and thrombocytes were the only cells to take up appreciable amounts of the carbon.

    Notes: The effect of excess vitamin D3 on calcium metabolism in rainbow trout was investigated. Trout were reared for 24 weeks on diets containing 4000, 104 000 or 1 004 000 iu of supplemental vitamin D3 kg-1 dry diet. No effect of excess vitamin D3 was detected in the weight gain, feed efficiency or total mortalities of trout in the different groups. None of the fish showed any signs of hypercalcaemia and no significant difference was detected in the calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and sodium content of the trout vertebrae or total carcass. However, there was a significant increase in the calcium, magnesium and phosphorus content of the skin in trout reared on the highest supplemental level of vitamin D3 (1 004 000 iu kg-1 diet). No overt signs of renal calcinosis were detected in any of the trout. This study indicates that trout are resistant to excess vitamin D3, and that excess vitamin D3 does not appear to be related to the increased incidence of renal calcinosis in rainbow trout.

    Notes: Abstract. The isolation and characterization of infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) virus from a goldfish, discus fish and bream is described. The fish from which the isolates were recovered showed no pathological signs of IPN. All three virus isolates were neutralized by antiserum to IPN, strain Ab, but not by antiserum to the Sp or VR-299 strains. They were morphologically identical to IPN virus in negative stain electron microscopy, grew in the cytoplasm of BF-2 cells, as shown by immuno-fluorescence and, like IPNV, were stable to heating, lipid solvents and acid pH.

    Notes: Abstract. An ‘oedema syndrome’ caused mortality of 55·5% in brood brown trout approximately 2 months after spawning. The pathology and clinical biochemistry of the condition are described. It is suggested that the severe hypoproteinaemia and anaemia were due mainly to the traditional reduction in feed levels prior to spawning at a time when the water temperatures were abnormally high. It is also suggested, however, that the syndrome would not have occurred if the fish had not developed an aeromonad infection prior to stripping. Concurrent fungal infection and subsequent extremely low water temperatures are also thought to have played a role.

    Notes: Abstract. The epidemiology of PKD is described as it relates to one affected farm in Northern Ireland. From 1972–1976 stocking and management practices led to mortality of 10–15% amongst the 0+fish. 1+or older fish were never affected. In 1977 and 1978, however, delaying the stocking of the farm until July eliminated deaths in the 0+fish, and mortality in these 1977-moved fish the subsequent year remained at an absolute minimum. Preliminary observations suggest that a means of controlling the disease has been found.Experimental work demonstrates that the resistance of 1 +or older fish is due to previous exposure and is not an age-related immunity. Experimental work also suggests the presence of an incubation period of 6–7 weeks and that the peak time of infectivity is probably around May. None of the evidence detracts from the possibility that an infectious agent is involved although an attempt to transmit the disease failed.

    Notes: Chronic erosive dermatopathy (CED) is a disease of intensively farmed Murray cod in Australia that has been reported in association with the use of groundwater (mechanically extracted from shallow boreholes) supplies. CED results in focal ulceration of the skin overlying sensory canals of the head and flanks. Trials were conducted at an affected fish farm to study the development of the condition, both in Murray cod and in goldfish, and also to assess the reported recovery of lesions when affected fish were transferred to river water. Grossly, lesions began after 2–3 weeks with degeneration of tissue at the periphery of pores communicating with the sensory canals. Widening of these pores along the axis of the canals resulted from a loss of tissue covering the canal. Histopathologically, hyperplasia of the canal epithelial lining was seen after 3 weeks in borehole water and subsequent necrosis and sloughing of this tissue resulted in the loss of the canal roof. Canal regeneration occurred when fish were transferred from borehole water into river water. The lack of lesions in other organs and the pattern of lesion development support exposure to waterborne factors as the most likely aetiology.

    Notes: Abstract. A histopathological description is given of 2 naturally-occurring outbreaks of furunculosis in brown trout, one sub-acute, the other chronic. The splenic ellipsoids were destroyed to a greater or lesser extent thereby leading to a collapse of vascular integrity of the organ. In chronically affected fish however, a proliferation of stromal cells including reticular sheath cells was additionally noted. Cardiac involvement was the most prominent feature of the chronically affected fish. The marked degree of destruction left little doubt that cardiac efficiency was very severely impaired.

    Notes: Abstract. Juvenile rainbow trout were exposed to 36, 171, 1017 and 4887 mg/1 of suspended kaolin clay for 64 days. Gills were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using histology. Branchial pathology was absent at all sample times in fish exposed to 36, 171 and 1017 mg/1 kaolin, although intracellular kaolin was visible within filament and lamellar epithelium in gills exposed to 171, 1017 and 4887 mg/1 kaolin at 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 days. Lesions were found in gills exposed to 4887 mg/1 kaolin at 16 and 32 days but the marked lamellar proliferation was associated with moderate to large numbers of protozoa identified as Ichthyobodo necator. Gills regained normal architecture by 64 days despite continued exposure to kaolin. It is suggested that while the gill lesions were probably a direct result of protozoan infection, kaolin was indirectly responsible for creating a favourable environment for protozoan colonization. The recovery of normal architecture and reduction of protozoan numbers between 32 and 64 days was probably a function of increased mucus secretion, immune response and turnover of branchial epithelium. The authors conclude that exposure to prevailing levels of this inert clay particle, even for periods as long as 64 days, probably has little direct effect on gill structure at the light microscope level. The action of non-inert and organic particles remains to be investigated.

    Notes: Moderate to severe anaemia and hypoproteinaemia were reported in a Canadian outbreak of ‘haemorrhagic kidney syndrome’ in Atlantic salmon, later shown to be caused by a variant of infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV). The progressive anaemia associated with ISA has been previously reported, but hypoproteinaemia in salmon infected with European isolates of ISA virus has not been well documented. The present study showed a very significant positive correlation between decreasing haematocrit values and total plasma protein concentrations in Atlantic salmon infected with two Canadian and two Norwegian ISA viral isolates. However, variations in the concentration of individual plasma proteins, typical of acute phase responses in higher vertebrates, were not observed.
