    Notes: Abstract Fat absorption of an adapted cow's milk formula was studied in a randomized controlled trial involving two groups of 18 premature infants (mean gestational age±SD: 33.0±2.9 weeks, range 26.5–37.5 weeks). The triglyceride configuration was modified by the use of lard. This modification did not improve the absorption of fat or energy. Also no difference in serum concentrations of cholesterol and tridifference was found. Growth velocity during the study was similar in both groups. Detailed analysis of the data revealed that in infants who received (parenterally) antibiotics (mainly ampicillin and netilmicin) a higher coefficient of fat absorption (+20%,P〈0.01) and of energy absorption (+8%,P=0.03) was found. Based on these results, we find no support for the use of lard in adapted cow's milk infant formulas to improve fat absorption. In studies of fat and energy absorption the effects of antibiotics have to be taken into account.

    Notes: Discrepancies between the one-time patch test and the wash test regarding the ranking of irritancy of detergents have been found in the literature. The aim of the present study was to investigate the concordance of irritancy rank order of 4 anionic detergents tested by 3 different exposure methods, namely one-time occlusive, repeated short-time occlusive and repeated short-time open tests. These detergents were sodium cocoyl isethionate (ISE), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), soap and disodium lauryl 3-ethoxysulfosuccinate (SUC). The reactions were evaluated by visual scoring and by transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurement. When scored visually, the rank order in the one-time test was: SOAP≥SLS≥ISE〉SUC. The other test methods yielded a different order: SLS〉ISE≥SOAP〉SUC. A similar rank order was obtained with TEWL measurement for all exposure methods. Generally, the concordance among the different exposure methods was high when evaluated by TEWL. The concordance was lower when evaluation was performed by visual scoring. The present study demonstrates that the choice of exposure model and evaluation method may be important variables influencing the outcome of irritancy testing. It is proposed that the repeated open test is the best way to simulate most in-use situations where the uncovered skin is exposed to detergents. The repeated occlusive test or the one-time patch test may be better to simulate situations in which the skin is occluded after irritation by detergents.

    Notes: The irritant potency of 5 types of insulation wools (2 types of rockwool and 3 types of glass wool) were studied on the basis of their differences in diameter by a standardized rubbing test. Assessment was done by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and erythema scores. Insulation wools show a wide distribution of the diameter around the mean. Of the rockwool material, 30% consisted of small grains, called “shot”. The control test site did not change over time; thus, the rubbing procedure itself does not seem to contribute to the skin reactions. All fibre types proved to be irritant to the skin. The irritant reactions did not correspond with the mean diameter, although the fibre type with the smallest diameter was the least irritant and the fibre type with the largest diameter the strongest. The presence of “shot” had a significant effect on the LDF responses. “Shot” and the distribution around the mean diameter may play a role in eliciting the skin irritation by insulation wools.

    Notes: Abstract This investigation was designed to determine the influence of different frequencies of tooth brushing on artificial periodontal defects in the beagle dog shortly after creation.In 12 beagle dogs, periodontal defects were created using elastic bands placed in the sulci below the gingival margin after having cut the dento-gingival fibres to the level of the alveolar bone. This active phase of creating defects lasted for 6 weeks. 6 premolars in the lower jaw were used (2P2, 3P3, 4P4). After removal of the elastic bands, the 12 dogs were distributed into 3 groups of 4 dogs each. Each group was brushed with a certain frequency, i.e., 7 times, 3 times or once a week. Plaque index, gingival index and probing depth, using a constant force probe, were assessed interproximally. The experiment lasted for 24 weeks.For hypothesis testing, a brushing effect was calculated for each dog. Furthermore, an analysis was performed based on the absolute scores at week 24. From the statistical analysis, it was concluded that in artificially-induced periodontal defects in beagle dogs immediately after creation, brushing 7 times a week is superior to brushing 3 times a week to establish and maintain gingival health.

    Notes: The two main pathogenetic characteristics of atopic dermatitis (AD) are: (i) antigen-dependent ‘specific’ reactivity, and (ii) altered non-immimological ‘non-specific’ reactivity. Our understanding of the role of non-specific reactivity is hampered by the fact that methods available for its quantification are limited. The aim of the present study was to assess the usefulness of two parameters as quantitative measures of non-specific skin reactivity in AD: (i) susceptibility to repeated epicutaneous exposure to an irritant (sodium lauryl sulphate, SLS), assessed by visual scoring and transepidermal water loss(TEWL) measurement, and (ii) reactivity to intracutaneously injected bioactive agents (codeine, FMLP, histamine, methacholine, substance P, trypsin), assessed by measurement of weal and flare size. These two parameters were tested in a group of AD patients, subdivided according to the severity of their dermatitis, and a control group. The visual score and TEWL after SLS exposure tended to be higher in the AD group than in the control group. Furthermore, visual score and post-exposure TEWL were positively correlated with the dermatitis severity score. Weal size following injection of codeine, histamine and substance P, and flare size following injection of all agents, except methacholine, were significantly lower in the AD group than in the control group. Negative correlations were found between weal and flare sizes and the dermatitis severity score. These findings can be explained by down-regulation of structures involved in weal and flare reactions. In conclusion, we propose that epicutaneous irritant susceptibility and reactivity to intracutaneous bioactive agents may be useful indicators of non-specific skin reactivity in AD.
