Notes: Abstract An anatomic study of the lateral extraosseous and intraosseous arterial supply of the calcaneus and the lateral soft tissue was carried out on 10 fresh lower adult cadaver legs using different anatomic and radiologic procedures (plastination, modified Spalteholz clearing technique, digital subtraction and rotational angiography and computed tomographic angiography). Consistent patterns of extraosseous and intraosseous lateral calcaneal vascular anatomy were demonstrated. The lateral calcaneal artery is a branch of the anterior tibial artery which crosses over the calcaneal tuberosity and forms a large lateral arch with the lateral tarsal artery which is a branch of the dorsalis pedis artery. The intraosseous circulation is supplied laterally by the lateral calcanear artery, medially via the short branches of the lateral plantar artery. Comparing magnet resonance images after fresh calcaneal fractures the lateral calcanear artery may be interrupted by the impacted lateral bulge, by the conventional lateral surgical approach, or by applying a lateral osteosynthesis plate. This may cause avascular bone necrosis. Furthermore the lateral calcanear artery can clinically serve as a vascular pedicle for a local rotational skin flap to cover soft tissue defects of the heel.

Notes: Summary A woman of 22 years developed heavy pain in the neck and arms with weakness and paresthesia. She died two days after a myelography which was normal. At autopsy an enterogenous extra- and intra-medullary cyst of the cervical cord (C 3, C 4) was found. In addition the cervical cord apart from the cyst and the uppermost thoracic cord presented central clefts which were filled with mucilage. These findings are named mucomyelia and have not been reported previously.

Notes: Abstract Iodixanol (visipaque, 320 mgI/ml) was compared with iopamidol (Solutrast, 370 mfI/ml) in a double-blind, randomized, parallel group, intravenous DSA phase-III trial for evaluation of safety and efficacy. A total of 117 patients received iodixanol (n = 60) or iopamidol (n = 57). Diagnostic efficacy was evaluated using categoric and visual analogue scales. Discomfort and adverse evenets were recorded. A total of 39 patients collected urine up to 72 h after the examination for analysis. Diagnostic efficacy and radiographic density were similar in both groups. Discomfort was milder with iodixanol. The difference between the frequency of adverse events between both groups (iodixanol = 7, iopamidol = 2) was without statistical significance. Creatinine clearance was slightly more affected by iodixanol, whereas the increase in renal excretion ofN-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) in the first 24 h collection period after the examination was significantly higher (p 〈 0.01) with iopamidol. Iodixanol was of equal diagnostic efficacy compared with iopamidol despite its reduced iodine content. Both contrast media are well suited for IV DSA.

Notes: Abstract A total of 102 matched hand radiographs were taken by digital luminescent radiography (DLR) and conventional) screen film system combinations. In DLR two differently postprocessed images were obtained from each data set: A display with low-spatial frequency enhancement filtered to took like a conventional radiograph was placed opposite a display with high-edge enhancement. Conventional and digital images were evaluated rank only and separately by four radiologists, using a questionnaire. Using DLR proved diagnostically equivalent to the conventional technique except for a diminished visibility of subtle erosions and fissures. High-frequency enhancement did not provide additional diagnostic information and led to artifacts at the edges of metal prostheses. Densitometry confirmed an optimized density of digital radiographs. The main argument for the employment of digital techniques is the availability of data for picture archiving and communications systems.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A rapid transfer of contrast medium (ethylniodo phenylester) from the c. s. f. into the blood can come about under pathological conditions (disorders of permeability). In the sphere of renal secretion severs disorders of kidney function can develop therefrom. In a patient with two carcinomas (Bronchus and Prostate) with numerous small nodular seedlings over the cauda equina a neurological syndrome of transection with obstructed c. s. f. occurred. Following myelography a disorder of renal function developed with oliguria, elevation of the blood pressure and changes in the serum albumen. The volume of contrast medium in the lumbar c. s. f. decreased relatively quickly as shown by radiographic checks, iodine containing contrast medium was recognisable both radiologically and chemically in high doses in the urine.

Notes: Steady shear and creep measurements over a two month period conducted on xanthan and propylene glycol alginate stabilized model salad dressing emulsions to which 0.25%, 0.35%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and up to 1.0% mustard flour was added showing that mustard flour aided emulsion stabilization. This stabilization was optimal at 0.35–0.5% mustard flour. The stabilization was attributed to interactions of proteins and carbohydrates which have surface active properties.

Notes: Conifer needles are highly effective in screening ultraviolet-B radiation (280–320 nm). This ability is mainly attributed to the presence of flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids in the epidermal tissue. In two field cabinet experiments with two different clones of Norway spruce we assessed the seasonal accumulation of UV-B screening pigments under near-ambient, and close-to-zero UV-B irradiation. At the beginning of needle development, i.e. in June, kaempferol 3-O-glucoside was the dominant UV-B screening pigment. It was replaced during needle differentiation by the more effective diacylated flavonol glucosides, particulary kaempferol 3-O-(3",6"-O-di-p-coumaroyl)-glucoside, which reached highest concentrations in July. In addition to the soluble pool of diacylated flavonol glucoside derivatives, a cell wall-bound UV-B screen in the epidermal cell walls was formed during needle differentiation, consisting mainly of p-coumaric acid and kaempferol 3-O-glucoside. An effect of UV-B radiation on the accumulation of diacylated flavonol glucosides was only observed in 1996 with clone 2, when the concentrations of kaempferol 3-O-(3",6"-O-di-p-coumaroyl)-glucoside were significantly higher in July and August under field, and near-ambient than under close-to-zero UV-B irradiance. For wall-bound p-coumaric acid and kaempferol 3-O-glucoside UV-B radiation enhanced the concentrations of these compounds by approximately 20% in relation to the concentrations in close-to-zero UV-B-treated plants in both field cabinet experiments.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) usually show a marked decrease in the visual flicker-fusion threshold (FFT or CFF “critical flicker-fusion frequency”), which remains liw even when clinical symptoms improve intermittently. Elevation of body temperature in MS patients aggravates their existing and sometimes reveals so far latent neurological symptoms, at the same time leading to a decrease of FFT. These alterations are reversible. We found that this decrease of FFT can be completely blocked by pre-test application of the amino-acids Tyrosin and Tryptophan, whereas other like Glutamin-acid and Asparagin-acid do not produce this effect. As only the first two are essential in the bio-synthesis of Adrenalin/Noradrenalin and Serotonin respectively results suggest a disturbance in the bio-synthesis of neuro-transmitters in MS. This may be of importance with regard to the general treatment of multiple sclerosis.
