Notes: Abstract —We have obtained constraints on the strength and orientation of anisotropy in the mantle beneath the Tonga, southern Kuril, Japan, and Izu-Bonin subduction zones using shear-wave splitting in S phases from local earthquakes and in teleseismic core phases such as SKS. The observed splitting in all four subduction zones is consistent with a model in which the lower transition zone (520–660 km) and lower mantle are isotropic, and in which significant anisotropy occurs in the back-arc upper mantle. The upper transition zone (410–520 km) beneath the southern Kurils appears to contain weak anisotropy. The observed fast directions indicate that the geometry of back-arc strain in the upper mantle varies systematically across the western Pacific rim. Beneath Izu-Bonin and Tonga, fast directions are aligned with the azimuth of subducting Pacific plate motion and are parallel or sub-parallel to overriding plate extension. However, fast directions beneath the Japan Sea, western Honshu, and Sakhalin Island are highly oblique to subducting plate motion and parallel to present or past overriding plate shearing. Models of back-arc mantle flow that are driven by viscous coupling to local plate motions can reproduce the splitting observed in Tonga and Izu-Bonin, but further three-dimensional flow modeling is required to ascertain whether viscous plate coupling can explain the splitting observed in the southern Kurils and Japan. The fast directions in the southern Kurils and Japan may require strain in the back-arc mantle that is driven by regional or global patterns of mantle flow.

Notes: Summary The workerless, inquiline ant,Doronomyrmex kutteri has isolated populations with a haploid chromosome number ofn=23 both in the Alps (Swiss and South Tyrolean Alps) and in Sweden, and a population withn=25 in southern Germany. Crossbreeding of sexuals from all populations proved successful. Backcrosses of F1-females with males from the parental populations produced F2-females, and hybrid males withn=23, 24, or 25 chromosomes. The chromosome polymorphism is not due to B-chromosomes. Probably then=25 karyotype originated from then=23 karyotype by two Robertsonian fissions (2 ¯M → 4 ¯A), since then=25 karyotype was found in only one of the populations. Diploid males occurred frequently in colonies from four out of five sites investigated.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The authors tested the culturing of micro-organisms from the circulating blood. “Liquoid” was used as an anticoagulant and to eleminate the inherent bactericidal factors. 1. The growth of meningococci is considerably inhibited in the “Liquoidvenule” filled with 8 ml of the patient's blood. Inhibition of streptococci and staphylococci is probable, particularly if the “Liquoid”-concentration increases by filling it with less blood. Under identical test conditions the growth of the tested grampositive and gramnegative rods was not affected. 2. The findings obtained at the Würzburg Institute of Hygiene cannot be compared to the blood culture statistics of other authors as a number of the prerequisites for statistic comparisons are absent. On the basis of the test results the authors suggest decreasing the “Liquoid”-concentration in the “Liquoid-venules” to 0.25%, and they also suggest special incubation techniques.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Most individuals with G6PD defieciency of the erythrocytes develop hemolytic anemia only after taking drugs or fava beans. The studied patient is a hemizygous carrier of the gene defect. Since birth he suffers from a severe nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. Hemolysis is enhanced by infections. The activity of the G6PD in the erythrocytes of the patient is diminished to 5 percent of the activity of normal persons. The G6PD of the patient is a variant of the normal enzyme. The affinity of the enzyme to glucose-6-phosphate is depressed by a factor of ten whereas the affinity to NADP is within the normal range. This type of G6PD has not been described til now. The erythrocytes of the heterozygous mother of the patient exhibit an enzyme activity of 57 percent of the activity of normal homozygous persons. The reticulocyte counts of the healthy mother are elevated to about 6 percent. Studies with51Cr-tagged erythrocytes of the patient indicate that liver and spleen are the mean sites of red cell sequestration. There is no difference of body surface activity between these two organs.

Notes: Summary The present investigation was designed to determine whether the circadian rhythm of glucose utilisation is based on a quantitatively different release of insulin and/or on changing secretory dynamics of the hormone. 22 healthy men received three oral glucose tolerance tests in the morning, afternoon and evening of the same day. The blood sugar levels in the afternoon and evening tests were significantly higher than those found in the morning tests. Also the plasma insulin response was higher in the afternoon than in the evening, but it showed a delayed rise and late peak response. In the evening the normal subjects responded as mild diabeties.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In a patient, aged 16, suffering from severe hereditary haemophilia A, inhibitors against antihaemophilic globulin A occurred as a consequence of repeated applications of antihaemophilic globulin. It has been shown by clotting analysis and immunological investigations that the inhibitors were antibodies of the type of Ig G. This is the explanation for the observation that in this patient the antihaemophilic globulin A not only was ineffective but also provoced shock symptoms. The precondition for the development of antibodies in this patient would be either a lack (the non-existence) of antihaemophilic globulin A, or that the applicated antihaemophilic globulin A became antigenic by the mode of its preparation. There is only an effective therapy after exchange transfusion. In case of species specificity of the inhibitor a therapy with animal antihaemophilic globulin is indicated. It may be possible to suppress the development of antibodies by the application of immunosuppressive drugs.
