Notes: Abstract Aqueous solutions of some fluorescent metal complexes of three compounds containing the methyleneiminobisacetic acid group have been found to show lasing when tested on a pulsed nitrogen laser. Degradation constants for lasing of one of the complexes and of the corresponding uncomplexed dye have been determined by coaxial flashlamp pumping.

Notes: Abstract A potential new class of “monocyclic” lasing dyes is discussed and four families out of nine within the class are examined. The 2,6-diaminopyridines in acid are found to lase under flashlamp excitation but show low slope efficiencies and lower stabilities than the “bicyclic” dyes described previously. Other, miscellaneous dyes show oxygen quenching of laser action rather than enhancement and the best of these produces short pulses under long pulse excitation.

Notes: Abstract A 3-parameter dye laser degradation equation is introduced that has been based upon a theoretical analysis of a laser oscillator. The new equation and the 4-parameter empirical laser degradation equation used previously in this series are further developed to allow calculation of the lifetime of a dye solution for any fraction of laser output degradation. These lifetime equations are shown to be dependent upon the input energy per pulse and the threshold of lasing. The new 3-parameter equation allows the degradation constants to be determined with less change in laser output than did the original 4-parameter empirical expression.

Notes: Abstract The lasing outputs and lifetime constants are reported for the fluorinated azacoumarin dyes, AC2F, AC3F, and AC4F, in a variety of solvents. Most of the tests were made under both air and argon. The best results were obtained using solvents such as ethanol mixed with water or ethylene glycol under air. The dyes AC2F or AC4F gave results that were comparable or superior to those of AC3F. These dyes represent the longest lived of the presently known coumarin laser dyes when used with a solvent capable of hydrogen bonding.

Notes: Abstract 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) was tested as a flashlamp-pumped laser lifetime-extender with a variety of coumarin dyes and solvents under both air and argon. In a few cases, DABCO could be considered to have extended the lifetime as much as threefold; however, the selection of the appropriate cover gas and/or solvent could often yield a much greater improvement in the absence of DABCO. In general, DABCO was not found to be very valuable as a lifetime-extender. Furthermore, under some conditions DABCO was found to markedly reduce the laser lifetime and output.

Notes: Abstract Reducing the diameter of the flashlamp was found to increase the percent improvement in output of a solid-state laser caused by using luminescent coolants. However, this change in diameter also reduced the effectiveness of the flashlamp in producing long (150 μs) laser pulses so that an overall decrease in laser output was observed. In the formation of short (40 μs) laser pulses, on the other hand, larger absolute values were obtained using the smaller diameter flashlamp.

Notes: Summary Unilateral stereotaxic microinjection of muscimol into the caudal region of the substantia nigra (SN) evoked tight, dose-related contralateral locomotor asymmetry and stereotypy. These behaviours were partially attenuated by various pre-treatments, including 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the nigrostriatal dopamine pathway, intraperitoneal (i.p.) haloperidol, and inhibition of thalamic GABA-transaminase activity by local intrathalamic injection of ethanolamine-O-sulphate. Electrolytic or kainic acid lesions of the medial thalamic nuclei (MTN) partially reduced the contraversive rotation to intranigral muscimol, and completely abolished the similar behaviour elicited by apomorphine (25 μg) injected into the ipsilateral caudate nucleus. Contraversive turning to intranigral muscimol was completely inhibited by kainic acid lesions of the ipsilateral SN, but potentiated by intrathalamic injection of picrotoxin. Muscimol (40 ng-4 μg) administered to the MTN complex in one hemisphere stimulated rats to move in ipsilateral circles that were unaffected by haloperidol. The results of these behavioural experiments suggest that the nigrostriatal dopamine pathway, the nigrothalamic projection and possibly other non-dopaminergic SN efferents all play important roles in mediating the influences of the SN on motor and stereotyped behaviours. Disruption of the nigrothalamic pathway following electrical or chemical injury to the SN was accompanied by falls in GABA and its synthesising enzyme in the corresponding MTN. These data, together with the findings of our electrophysiological study presented in the following paper, are consistent with the nigrothalamic system having a GABAergic inhibitory function.
