Notes: The author's previous work, itself based on the work of Martin Heidegger and then the Speech Act theorists grounded two important claims. First, computers are about communication, not computation or data processing. Second, communication is primarily about the coordination of commitments to act. This paper argues, as a review of the thinking in Understanding Computers and Cognition, that much is still to be learned about how speech acts work to structure commitments and how the interlinked structure of multiple commitments determines the kind of actions possible in any institution. The paper considers the way the Web establishes sites, virtual communities, and so forth. By referring to Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger on identity, the paper examines the sorts of identities virtual places are currently making possible and the development that virtual, identity forming practices will need to undergo if virtual sites are to act as real sites do.

Notes: Abstract Chemical composition and protein quality of the main chickpea varieties cultivated in Mexico were determined. The raw and cooked chickpeas analyzed were: Surutato, Surutato 77, Sonora, Sonora 80, Porquero, Macarena, Breve Duro and a mixture of broken seeds used mainly for animal feeding. The chemical composition of the raw chickpea studied was very similar; the average values of the nutrients were: ash 3.1±0.2, fat 5.0±1.0, protein 19.5±1.2 and fiber 3.7±2.1. Cooking diminished only the ash content and the Porquero variety was the only one that had a high content of crude fiber (9.1%). There was not found agglutinating activity to rabbit RBC in any of the raw chickpeas studied and the trypsin inhibitor activity average was 11.8±2.4 TUI/mg sample. Cooking destroyed 57% of this activity. Digestibility was the same in the raw and in the cooked chickpea (78%). There were not found significant differences in the PER values of the raw and cooked seeds: 1.65–2.30 and 1.80 to 2.61 respectively. The Surutato and Breve Duro varieties were statistically similar to the casein PER (2.5). It could be recommended to use these two varieties mainly for infant feeding.

Notes: The general theory developed in Part 1 of this paper for the finite element stability analysis of structural systems, using perturbation expansions in the vicinity of a critical point, is applied here to the analysis of shells of revolution. The discretization of the shell is performed by means of a semianalytical approximation, and the matrices required for the evaluation of critical points and postcritical equilibrium paths are obtained. Two cases are presented: bifurcation in axisymmetric and in asymmetric buckling modes. The derivatives required for an imperfection analysis are also obtained. A technique of switching between two paths using continuation methods is also discussed, in which the switch is performed using derivatives of the perturbation expansion. Results are presented for bifurcation in axisymmetric and in non-axisymmetric modes, and compared with known solutions or with results from changing the path using continuation methods; good correlation is shown. For structures displaying unstable bifurcation, the influence of load and geometric imperfections is evaluated.

Notes: The main equations for the equilibrium, stability and critical state analysis of discrete elastic systems are presented following the works of Thompson, but in such a way that the original set of generalized coordinates and loads are preserved in the Total Potential Energy. This introduces differences in the resulting equations in bifurcation analysis but does not introduce any new feature regarding the physics of the problem. The new formulation is approximated by means of a standard finite element approach based on interpolation of displacements, in which the derivatives of the potential energy are approximated. The terms retained are those of moderately large rotation theory. The energy analysis is finally related to the more conventional finite element notation in terms of stiffness matrices, and it is shown how in such a way it can be included in present day codes.Part 2 of the paper deals with applications to the analysis of shells of revolution using a semi-analytical approximation. Two cases are presented in detail: bifurcation in axisymmetric and in asymmetric modes, and the results show good correlation with those of other authors. The influence of load and geometric imperfections is evaluated.

Notes: This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of kinematically non-linear shell problems using approximate techniques. The interest is focused on shells of revolution, for which a technique proposed by Nagy and König has been implemented and assessed by means of numerical studies. The non-linear path is approximated using a reduced basis of buckling modes. The results illustrate that reasonable estimates of moderately non-linear paths can only be expected for cases in which the fundamental path is governed by membrane action.
