Notes: Summary We have investigated some Ag−Cd and Ag−Mg alloys within the KKR-CPA framework in order to give insights on their electronic properties. Notwithstanding Cd and Mg have different electronic configurations it appears that their effect on the pure Ag is quite the same. In fact measurements on their optical properties and Fermi surface indicate that most of the spectra and Fermi surface parameters are comparable. In the meantime it also appears that they cannot be classified as rigid band alloys. From the results we obtain it is possible to give sensible explanations to this peculiar behaviour in terms of the angularmomentum channels of the coherent scattering amplitude obtained within the KKR-CPA theory, the main conclusion being thats- andp-like states remain essentially free-electron-like, whiled-like states are very much perturbed by the alloying.

Notes: Summary We have extended the well-known relativistic KKR-CPA theory up tol≤3 angular momentum, in order to make this framework suitable to deal with rare-earth alloys. However, such an extension has also relevance in judging the convergence of the KKR-CPA calculations even for those atomic species with empty valencef-states. To do that we worked out the transformation from the usual real spherical harmonics to the cubic double-point group representatin. We have tested the present theory and corresponding codes by computing the electronic structure of Cu0.75−Au0.25 and by comparing our results with earlierl≤2 R-KKR-CPA calculations. In order to reduce the large amount of computing time required, we have also used a new technique for the Brillouin zone integration.

Notes: Summary We have investigated the electronic states of some Pt-W alloys by means of the relativistic KKR-CPA theory in order to gain some insights on the many interesting physical properties of such a system. In particular we were interested in studying the role of the Fermi surface topology in the ordering phenomena shown by this alloy. It turns out that the broadening of the states at the Fermi energy makes the Fermi surface concept questionable. Reasons for that are understood in terms of our scheme and approximations, even though to give an exhaustive answer one should pursue the full-charge self-consistency obtainable in the SCF-KKR-CPA theory.

Notes: A high-resolution method to image the horizontal boundaries of gravity and magnetic sources is presented (the enhanced horizontal derivative (EHD) method). The EHD is formed by taking the horizontal derivative of a sum of vertical derivatives of increasing order. The location of EHD maxima is used to outline the source boundaries. While for gravity anomalies the method can be applied immediately, magnetic anomalies should be previously reduced to the pole. We found that working on reduced-to-the-pole magnetic anomalies leads to better results than those obtainable by working on magnetic anomalies in dipolar form, even when the magnetization direction parameters are not well estimated. This is confirmed also for other popular methods used to estimate the horizontal location of potential fields source boundaries. The EHD method is highly flexible, and different conditions of signal-to-noise ratios and depths-to-source can be treated by an appropriate selection of the terms of the summation. A strategy to perform high-order vertical derivatives is also suggested. This involves both frequency- and space-domain transformations and gives more stable results than the usual Fourier method. The high resolution of the EHD method is demonstrated on a number of synthetic gravity and magnetic fields due to isolated as well as to interfering deep-seated prismatic sources. The resolving power of this method was tested also by comparing the results with those obtained by another high-resolution method based on the analytic signal. The success of the EHD method in the definition of the source boundary is due to the fact that it conveys efficiently all the different boundary information contained in any single term of the sum.Application to a magnetic data set of a volcanic area in southern Italy helped to define the probable boundaries of a calderic collapse, marked by a number of magmatic intrusions. Previous interpretations of gravity and magnetic fields suggested a subcircular shape for this caldera, the boundaries of which are imaged with better detail using the EHD method.

Notes: Induced magnetization in the intermediate to deep crust is insufficient to justify regional magnetic anomalies. This is an unresolved problem, that cannot be completely explained by induced and viscous magnetization. In this context, the contribution of remanent magnetization in the Southern Italian Region has been investigated from a study of long-wavelength magnetic anomalies. By means of a shape analysis, several anomalies were found which indicate a total magnetization vector direction different from the induced one. From the good correspondence between these deduced declinations with palaeomagnetic and palaeotectonic data, we infer a remarkable manifestation of remanent magnetization in the intermediate-crust.

Notes: The 3–D model of the Earth, as obtained with a brand new investigative technique, is discussed. However an international collaborative project, involving researchers from the whole world, has uncovered a severe systematic error in the new data acquisition system making the results of this new model highly questionable.

Notes: The diagnosis of cow's milk allergy or intolerance (CMAI) is based on clinical improvement on exclusion diet and relapse after challenge with milk. The aim of this work was to investigate the value of the cellobiose/mannitol (C/M) sugar permeability test, performed before and after cow's milk challenge, as a tool for the diagnosis of CMAI. Thirty-two patients underwent milk challenge at a median age of 13 months (range 3–84 months). A dual sugar (C/M) permeability test with an iso-osmolar solution was performed before and 24 h after challenge. Of the 10 patients who developed symptoms after challenge, nine showed increased postchallenge C/M ratio, whereas such an increase was observed in only one of the 22 nonrelapsed subjects. The postchallenge C/M ratio increase in relapsed subjects is to be attributed to both higher cellobiose and lower mannitol urinary excretion. These results suggest the use of the sugar permeability test, in addition to clinical observation, as an aid in the evaluation of provocation tests in infants with suspected CMAI.

Notes: Abstract Rebound after plasmapheresis is thought to be due to enhanced antibody and/or immune complex production. To prevent rebound a combination of steroids and immunosuppressive drugs has been used: lymphocytapheresis was employed in most patients, for not more than 10 sessions. 50 patients with myasthenia gravis, inflammatory myopathy, chronic dysimmune polyneuropathy and immune complex polyneuropathy have been treated and longlasting benefits obtained in 35 patients. Rebound effects were observed only when cytotoxic drugs were not given or discontinued too soon. 8 patients who had been treated by plasmapheresis combined with steroids alone, after some recurrences of their disease, were switched to cytotoxic drugs, steroids and lymphocytapheresis combined with plasma exchange: in this group 7 patients eventually gained long lasting remissions. Our clinical experience strongly supports the hypothesis of a synergy between plasmapheresis and immunosuppressive measures.
