Notes: Summary The respiratory health of 138 arc welders and 106 control subjects in the same company was studied in 1981 and in 1986. Most of the subjects welded mild steel using the Metal Inert Gas (MIG) process. The controls were workers in the same company, not exposed to any known pulmonary risk. The welders and controls in the analysis had not changed their professional activity nor their smoking habits during these five years. The examinations consisted of a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms, a thoracic auscultation, a chest X-ray and lung function tests: flow-volume curve and steady state CO transfer test. The examinations in 1986 confirmed the risk of non specific radiological impairment (pulmonary reticulo-micronodulation) and of obstruction in the small bronchi, which had already been observed in 1981 in the arc welders in this company. These impairments did not seem to have evolved more than in the controls, but do however justify regular surveillance of the respiratory health of arc welders.

Notes: Abstract Objectives: The mortality of workers involved in the production of stainless and alloyed steel from 1968 to 1992 was studied, in order to investigate the risk of lung cancer due to exposure to metals, i.e. iron oxides, chromium and/or nickel compounds. Methods: The study design was a historical cohort mortality study and a nested case-control study concerning lung cancer. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were computed using regional mortality rates as an external reference for comparing observed and expected numbers of deaths, adjusting for age, sex and calendar time. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs). Occupational exposure was assessed through the complete job histories of cases and controls and a specific job-exposure matrix. Results: The cohort comprised 4,288 male and 609 female workers. The observed overall mortality was significantly lower than expected [649 deaths; SMR = 0.91; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.84–0.98]. No significant SMR was observed for mortality from lung cancer (54 deaths; SMR = 1.19; CI 0.88–1.55). The case-control study was based on 54 cases and 162 individually matched controls. Smoking habits were available for 71%. No lung cancer excess was observed for exposure to (1) metals and/or their compounds, i.e. iron (OR = 0.94, CI 0.48–1.86), chromium and/or nickel (OR = 1.18, CI 0.62–2.25), and cobalt (OR = 0.64, CI 0.33–1.25), (2) acid mists (OR = 0.43, CI 0.17–1.10), and (3) asbestos (OR =  1.00, CI 0.54–1.86). With respect to exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and silica, which are often found together in workplaces, (1) high and statistically significant lung cancer excesses were observed, the ORs being 1.95 (CI 1.03–3.72) and 2.47 (CI 1.28–4.77) respectively, (2) quantitative exposure parameters revealed upward trends reaching statistical significance (P 〈 0.05), and (3) adjustments for tobacco consumption did not reveal any confounding factors from smoking. Conclusion: This study failed to detect any relationship between lung cancer and exposure to iron, chromium, nickel and/or their compounds. High and statistically significant relative risks, along with increasing trends, were observed for simultaneous exposure to PAHs and silica.

Notes: [Auszug] Here we propose a different method of using Raman interactions for pollutant determination. When a laser beam propagates through a mixture of gases, the molecules in the beam can provide signal amplification at any of the Raman wavelengths scattered. This phenomenon, the stimulated Raman effect, ...

Notes: Abstract An iodine-iodide reagent containing saturated calcium chloride was used for quantitation of larchwood xylan in solution and for improved visualization of xylanase activity on solid media. This spectroscopic methodology is applicable to hemicelluloses from other sources and can differentiate hemicelluloses from other polysaccharides such as amylose, amylopectin, and xyloglucan.

Notes: Several properties of polyethylene, synthesized by Co60 gamma radiation have been investigated. The polymerization reactions were carried out in static experiments over a wide range of conditions. Measurements include molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, density, methyl group content, crystalline melting point, and melt index. The density of polyethylene formed at 20°C. was found to be 0.94 g./cc. This value appears to be independent of pressure from 170 to 1700 atm. and radiation intensity from 0.58 × 105 to 4.7 × 105 rads./hr. Increasing temperature results in increasing methyl group content and a decrease in density to 0.91 g./cc. at 200°C. The polymers formed, over the entire range of experimental conditions, were completely soluble in o-dichlorobenzene at 135°C. Intrinsic viscosities were determined and their dependence on temperature, pressure, intensity, and radiation dose are shown. An attempt was made to correlate melt index to molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.

Notes: Abstract A sugarcane juice-based low cost culture medium was previously explored to produce the carotenoid pigment astaxanthin in liquid culture by the red yeast Phaffia rhodozyma (1300 μg astaxanthin/g of dry yeast and 6500 μg/l whole culture medium). Two peculiar limitations in Phaffia are growth temperature (〈26 °C) and lack of sugar osmotolerance. Two advantages are the wide biochemical ability for the assimilation and metabolization of disaccharides and the prompt utilization of simple nitrogen sources. For instance, the sucrolytic/ureolytic enzymatic activities deserves exploration. In order to improve the culture medium composition and the conditions of fermentation for highly oxygenated carotenoids (e.g., astaxanthin) a study was carried out with a factorial design in two steps. As a first step, the production of astaxanthin was studied as a function of the nutrient concentration levels and their interactions. The production increase (μg/l) obtained was 23.0% but at the expense of 16.0% pigment content decrease (μg/g). In the second step, the variables pH and agitation level (OTR, oxygen transfer rate) were optimized and then, both goals were attained: the increase of pigment content (418 μg astaxanthin/g of yeast) as well as the absolute pigment production enhancement (1987 μg/l).
