    Notes: This paper examines some of the striking similarities and differences in issues and conceptual structure between three seemingly disparate areas of study over a 50-year period; distribution channels, internationalisation and networks. The paper questions why these and other areas of study seem to emerge, prosper and decline in a relatively brief period and shows how each seems to have been developed more or less in isolation from earlier ones. More importantly, it suggests that the researchers involved in each area often do not seem to have learned from what has gone before. The paper draws a number of conclusions from this pattern for the practice of research in marketing.

    Notes: Intellectual capital has gained increasing attention concerning both research and more practically oriented applications during the past five years. Intellectual Capital and other knowledge management tools are topics that have emerged in the light of a broader trend of redirecting the foundation of competitive advantage from the company's tangible assets to its intangibles such as knowledge base, brands and the content and structure of computer-based systems. In this paper, the concept of intellectual potential is introduced. Intellectual potential is a further development of intellectual capital, using four principles: strategy basis; management orientation; process orientation; and context sensitivity. The concept is a tool for the strategic management of an organisation's intangible assets in order to increase its long-term revenue-generating capabilities. The case of Alfa Laval is used as an illustration of how intellectual potential can add value as a management tool.

    Notes: Complete and accurate design is critical for construction project success. Manifesting design intent in the constructed facility depends on coordinated design documents that are developed through design realization. This process evolves design intent from architects and engineers to contractors, through the production and review of shop drawings and other submittals. Information technology has been promoted as a tool to improve this process, but is not being fully utilized for this purpose. A case study investigates the impacts of computed aided design (CAD) on design realization. Comparative analysis between shop drawings prepared by hand and those done with CAD quantify notes, corrections and information transfer errors. Results support the hypothesis that utilizing CAD can improve design accuracy and lower project costs. Barriers to wider adoption, implications for practice and further research are discussed.

    Notes: : The accurate and reliable determination of floodplains, floodway boundaries, and flood water elevations are integral requirements of Flood Insurance Studies. These studies are intended to be used for determining the flood insurance rates. Therefore, the accuracy of the water surface profiles are important. To ensure the high degree of accuracy, the HUD Flood Insurance Administration has developed standards which must be met in the analysis of water surface profiles. A somewhat less accurate study is required for the preparation of Flood Emergency Plans. As part of the flood insurance studies of eight locations in the State of North Dakota, various flood hazard and floodplain information reports were reviewed. The hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, especially the computation of the 100-year water surface profiles, were completed using both simplified and complex hydraulic computation methods. Significant differences were found (1 to 3 feet) between the profiles computed by the SCS simplified method and those computed by HEC-2 computer program. However, the floodplain boundaries determined by both methods were found to be similar. Approximate methods are recommended for rapid determination of the floodplain, floodway boundaries, and inundation area mapping, while sophisticated computer programs (HEC-2) are recommended to be used for developing areas where the 100-year flood elevation has a significant impact on the cost of land development.

    Notes: Madden and Glandt have previously introduced a formalism for describing the structure of fluids in disordered microporous media [J. Stat. Phys. 51, 537 (1988)]. Structure in the system is described by pair correlation functions analogous to those used in equilibrium liquid-state theory. The applicability of the traditional ways of calculating thermodynamic properties from these functions has been somewhat in question. In this note, we introduce a new form of the compressibility equation for a fluid in a quenched matrix. When this approach is applied to a model hard-sphere system, the results compare very favorably with those from Monte Carlo simulations.

    Notes: There has been much recent interest in using transition-state theory (TST) to extend the time and length scales accessible to molecular-level simulations of adsorbate transport in microsporous materials. However, the vast majority of this work has been performed on systems at infinite dilution. The objective of this paper is to obtain fundamental rate constants for adsorbate motion at nonzero loadings using multidimensional TST. More specifically, we focus on systems where the adsorption of a molecule is not highly localized in a single site, but rather distributed throughout an uncorrugated cage. We develop a theory in which high-dimensional TST integrals are approximated using exact lower-dimensional information. The evaluation of the resulting integrals is performed with an importance sampling method involving the insertion of a single molecule, thus improving the statistical quality of the results. The theory is applied to the motion of methane and xenon in the zeolite ZK4, where hopping between α cages is the rate-limiting event. Our results show that hopping rates increase with loading in the cage, which is consistent with experimental trends in the diffusivity. Agreement between our theory and corresponding molecular dynamics simulations is excellent. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
