    Notes: Summary A fine system for measuring the density of fibres has been constructed. The measuring technique was based on the concept of vibrating strings. Density of polypropylene fibres, originally drawn to known ratios, was measured. The fibre diametre was measured by the laser forward diffraction technique. Behaviour of fibre density at different draw ratios and different molecular orientations was discussed. The bundle model for the polymeric microstructure was recommended in this study in order to explain the mass redistribution associated with the drawing process of the polypropylene fibres. X-ray diffraction technique was used to explain the share of crystalline phase in the mass redistribution process. The applicability of Gladston-Dale equation to mechanically draw fibres was discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Birefringence for vinyon fibres have been investigated. The principal refractive index parallel and perpendicular to the stretch direction were found. Double-beam and multiple-beam interferometry methods were applied. The double-beam technique was applied to the mean birefringence and the mean refractive indices for plane-polarized light parallel and perpendicular to the fibre axis. The diffraction of a He-Ne laser beam was used to measure the dimensional parameters, transverse sectional shape, and area of the fibre. The fibre area was used to calculate the principal refractive indices. The Becke-line method was used to measure the refractive indices of the outer layer of the fibre (skin) for polarized light parallel and perpendicular to the fibre axis. The results were found to be in good agreement with published data.

    Notes: Abstract A modified stress-strain device is used to investigate the dynamical behaviour of optomechanical properties. The optical properties and strain produced in vestan fibres by different stresses have been measured at room temperature interferometrically. It has been found that the relation between strain and birefringence is linear up to strain of 12%. For greater strain the rate of change of birefringence with strain is cut off due to breaking. An empirical formula is suggested to represent the variation of the cross-sectional area of vestan fibres with draw ratio and the constants of this formula are determined. An expression has also been suggested for the birefringence related to the strain. The strain optical coefficient is determined. Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, elastic shear modulus and the compressibility are calculated over different strain values. Microinterferograms are given for illustration.

    Notes: Abstract Studies of the mechanical and optical properties of undrawn polypropylene fibres by annealing and drawing were performed. The optical properties and strain produced in polypropylene fibres at different conditions were measured interferometrically at room temperature. It was found that as the draw ratio of the fibre increased, its birefringence, Δna, increased at a constant rate, and then nearly levelled off. The refractive index, n ∥, and polarizability, p ∥, increased with different draw ratios; but for fibres annealed at 70 and 100°C, there were no acceptable variations. For fibres annealed at 130°C, n ∥ and p ∥ increased compared to those fibres annealed at 70 and 100°C. An empirical formula has been suggested to explain the relationship between the cross-sectional area of polypropylene fibres with the draw ratio, and the constants of this formula have been determined. The effect of annealing on the refractive index profile of undrawn polypropylene fibres, before and after thermal treatment, was studied. The strain optical coefficient and the Poisson's ratio were calculated over different draw ratios. The results obtained clarify the effect of annealing time and temperature with different draw ratios on the optical behaviour of polypropylene fibres. Microinterferograms are given for illustration.

    Notes: Abstract Refractive indices and birefringence for skin and core changes with strain, produced by different stresses in undrawn vestan fibres, were measured interferometrically. Applications were carried out using multiple-beam Fizeau fringes in transmission to determine the Cauchy's constants and dispersive coefficient for the fibre layers. The resulting data were used to calculate the polarizability per unit volume for each layer. The scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope and He-Ne laser beam were applied to estimate the geometrical parameters of the fibre cross-section. A comparative study between the three methods used for measuring the fibre diameter was made. The effect of temperature on the refractive index and birefringence for each fibre layer has been also investigated. The relationship between temperature and birefringence of the fibres was studied and the thermal coefficient of the refractive index was determined. An empirical formula is suggested to relate temperature and birefringence. Illustrations are given using microinterferograms.

    Notes: Abstract Nylon 6 fibres were annealed in the temperatures range 80–185 °C for times from 1–10 h, and the density of the annealed fibres was measured by a system based on the theory of vibrating strings. The fibre diameter was also determined, using the laser forward diffraction technique. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) measurements were used to determine the glass transition temperature and the melting point of nylon 6. Some annealed samples were subjected to X-ray diffraction to clarify the variation of crystallinity with the annealing conditions. The mechanism of structural variations for nylon 6 fibres due to the annealing process is discussed, and structural details for crystalline and non-crystalline phases of a polymer are suggested. The behaviour of the number of oriented chains, number of crystallized nuclei, relative amount of recrystallized material and the shrinkage ratio with annealing time is proposed to explain the thermal structural variations.

    Notes: Polyester (Egyptian) fibers were annealed at constant temperature (190°C) with different annealing times. Density, crystallinity, mean square density fluctuation, mechanical loss factor, and molecular orientation were calculated. Densities and mechanical loss factor were determined using an acoustic method. Changes in the molecular orientation were evaluated from the resulting optical data using the polarizing Pluta interference microscope. Correlation of data obtained by one method with another leads to relational changes in optothermal properties and in the molecular orientation. Changes of refractive index profiles of annealed PET fibers are provided. Illustrations using graphs and microinterferograms are shown. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Theoretical and experimental treatments of the shape of Fizeau fringes crossing a fibre of Trilobal-shaped cross-section assumed to consist of a single medium are presented. A New mathematical expression is derived and used to estimate the refractive indices and the birefringence of Perlon (polycaprolactam) fibre. The resulting data are used to calculate the polarizability per unit volume. Cauchy's dispersion constants, the isotropic refractive index and the variation of refractive index with temperature are reported. The results are in agreement with previously published data. The data are illustrated by microinterferograms.
