Abstract The wavelength dependence of the second-harmonic (SH) generation efficiency has been measured in copper. A strong enhancement of the SH generation has been observed at the onset of interband transitions. Above the absorption edge the second-order polarization is dominated by the nonlinear response of bound electrons.
