    Notes: Abstract Procaine has opposite effects on the active transport of Na+ when applied on the mucosal side of the frog skin [where it produces a stimulation of the short-circuit current (I sc)] or when added on the serosal side (where it produces an inhibition ofI sc). In an attempt to reveal and localize the primary effect of procaine on either the apical or latero-basal membranes of the epithelial cells, we have tried to “chemically dissect” both membrane functions with inhibitors and ionophores. When applied on the apical side of the latero-basally depolarized epithelium, 25 mmol/l procaine increasesI sc andV oc (transepithelial open-circuit potential), while decreasing the transepithelial resistance. TheE 1−E 2 linearity domain of the I–V curves is narrowed. On the serosal side of the depolarized epithelium, the same concentration of procaine does not affectI sc andV oc (which are already inhibited) but it produces an increase in the transepithelial resistance (R t). Procaine influence on the passive K+ permeability was studied by using the ionophore nystatin, which is assumed to form channels permeable to K+, when applied on the amiloride blocked apical membrane. In nystatin-treated epithelia, 25 mmol/l procaine on the apical side decreaseI sc,V oc andR t. In parallel experiments during Cl− substitution by SO 4 2− , the procaine effects onI sc andV oc are no longer maintained, but transient. The results suggest that procaine positively influences the Na+ transient through the apical Na+-channels, and inhibits the epithelial permeability for K+, possibly by reducing K+-ions accessibility to the K+-channels.

    Notes: Abstract A simple theoretical model of local activation and proliferation of a clone of cytotoxicalT-lymphocytes in response to a replicating tumor clone is presented. Dynamical evolution of this model describes different clinical situations of cancer disease. A detailed stability and bifurcation parameters analysis of the model states was done. In order to describe tumor metastasis, the model was expanded for description of the migration cells between two spaced tumor centers. By numerical computations for different values of cell migration rates, a chaotic regime was obtained through a cascade of doubling period. The migration model can be used to investigate and understand various types of dynamic evolution of invading tumor clones.

    Notes: Conclusions The following stable nitrogen-containing free radicals were synthesized from aromatic nitro compounds and organomagnesium derivatives: p-diphenylaminophenyl-tert-butyl-, p-diphenylamino-tert-amyl-, 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl-tert-butyl, and 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl-tert-amylnitroxyl. The EPR, IR, and UV spectra were studied and the reasons for the stability of the obtained nitroxyls were discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Hair samples were collected from 20 metallurgical workers (10 males and 10 females) and from 59 control subjects (32 males and 27 females), whose jobs do not indicate a specific occupational exposure. The concentrations of ten minor and trace elements (Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Sb, Se, V and Zn) were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The statistical data distributions, the sex and age influences in these elemental concentrations and the average values obtained for the control group were compared with published data. The effect of occupational exposure to the metallic elements was reflected in elemental composition of hair by significant higher concentration levels of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Sb, V and Zn in the hair of the exposed group, when compared with the control group.

    Notes: Summary A sensitive capillary gas chromatographic method is described for the simultaneous determination of lidocaine, tetracaine, procaine and dibucaine. The method was applied to the determination of anesthetics in tissue homogenates incubated at 38°C at doses between 10 and 400 mg/kg. In the liver tissue thein vitro metabolization of the studied anesthetics is most rapid for tetracaine, also fast for procaine, while for lidocaine and dibucaine the metabolization is very slow. In brain tissue thein vitro metabolization of anesthetics is very slow. The method shows good analytical parameters: linearity between 5 and 40 μg/ml; day-to-day reproducibility ca. 8% for a concentration of 20 μg/ml, precision ca. 7% for a concentration of 20μg/ml. Accuracy is also very good.
