Abstract As a complement to diffraction experiments, which are restricted to radial distribution functions, local symmetry data are needful in order to test models of amorphous structure beyond pair correlation functions. Electric field gradient distributions which give qualitatively access to second order symmetries, demonstrate the existence of a pronounced short range order in bonding angles, especially around the glass-former atom, for several series of amorphous alloys (Zr-Fe, Ni-B, RE-X). The possibilities and limitations of this methodology are discussed. Promising developments for approaching high order correlation functions rely on the investigation of crystal field sensitive properties in amorphous rare earth alloys.
