Description / Table of Contents: Phenomena involved in the formation of protective layers in galvanized steel tubingOn the basis of studies in connection with the influence of time and flow rate on the corrosion of zinc it is possible to say that the corrosion rate is not time dependent, while it is a function of water pH and of flow conditions. It is approximately inversely proportional to the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. The values obtained by electrochemical tests point to a strong inhibition of the partial cathodic reactions; this inhibition increases continuously with time because of this inhibition the Stern-Geary formula is not applicable; consequently it is not possible to electrochemically determine the corrosion loss in a short time. It is equally impossible to interprete i(U) curves and polarization resistance on the basis of experimental results so far available.

Description / Table of Contents: Strain-induced stress corrosion cracking in liquid metalsIntercrystalline attack of steels may be caused by liquid metals (LME = Liquid Metal Embrittlement) as well as by electrolytes. LME-cracks were observed on both ferritic and austenitic stainless steels and on low-alloy or unalloyed steels. Especially, steel-constructions under tensile-stresses are endangered, for instance during brass-soldering and hot-dip-galvanizing.Considerable safety-risks and economical losses are connected with cracks caused by LME of steel-vessels for lead-raffination and galvanizing-purposes, because high quantities of liquid metal may flow out. A hypothesis for crack-behaviour is discussed. No possibilities seem to exist avoiding LME-damages by measures aside the composition of the liquid metals or the steels. Special investigations shall give results about critical figures for tensile-stress and strain-rate. These might be a base for constructor and shop-manager to create rules for building and handling of endangered steel-equipment to avoid LME.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of oxygen content, pH and flow velocity under corrosion of hot-dip galvanized and bare piping of unalloyed steel in potable waterSections and weighed ring specimens from galvanized and nongalvanized tubes had been exposed to flowing tap water with different flow rates and oxygen concentrations of 0.01-4 mg/l at pH 7.2 and 8.0 for 3.5 ys. Specimens taken at different testing times had been investigated with respect to data of protective layers, corrosion manifestation and weight loss. The corrosion rate is nearly constant in the first weeks (initial corrosion), later it follows a power law (stationary corrosion). These two phases of corrosion are determined by the testing parameters differently. Thus, results from short-time experiments of some weeks cannot inform on the stationary behaviour. In oxygen free tap water remarkable corrosion occurs due to the acids H2CO3 and HCO3-. The corrosion resistance is supported by high oxygen content, high pH, flow rate and by galvanizing.

Description / Table of Contents: Field tests on galvanized stell tubes in drinking watersSpecimens cut from galvanized steel tubes were exposed to cold water for up to 5 yrs. in field tests. The testing conditions were similar to those in a real domestic installation. Three different kinds of zinc layer have been investigated: commercial standard layer according to DIN 2444, layer consisting predominantly of zinc-iron alloy phases (galvannealed) and a foamy layer produced by blowing out with air after hot dipping. The tests have been performed in water works with 11 different water qualities which are thought to be representative of the drinking water supply in the Federal Republic of Germany. Besides visual examination, mass loss and electrochemical measurements have been carried out.The testing results demonstrate the predominant influence of the water characteristics. Especially, the content of CO2 controlls the corrosion rate of zinc. The influence of the zinc coating quality as well as of the service conditions was less important, possibly due to a relatively high flow rate of the water, if the influence of the flowing conditions and contact with copper alloys at joints are not considered. Electrochemical measurements show a limited applicability of Stern-Geary equation for the system galvanized stell/water, using an appropriate constant.

Description / Table of Contents: Observations in connection with the atmospheric corrosion of hot-dip galvanized surfacesA report on tests having been carried on since 1963 in an industrial atmosphere, with 2 specimens being examined every 6 months. Formation of rust starts after about 30 months, proceeding from the edge of the specimen; after 54 to 60 months the top surface of the specimen has become covered with rust areas, there is a typical difference between the corrosion losses on the upper and lower face of specimen (3:1 by weight). Hard zinc and pure zinc practically show identical behaviour. Hard zinc experience an initial increase in weight, while pure zinc is loosing weight from the very beginning; after this initial period, however, the weight loss curves are parallel.

Description / Table of Contents: Field corrosion tests on hot dip galvanized steel pipes - Assessment of long term dataThe degree of metal loss and its time dependence of hot dip galvanized steel pipes in flowing waters were correlated with the water parameters. A good correlation was observed with CO2 concentration of the water. The higher the initial corrosion rate the higher is in many cases the decrease in corrosion rate with time. This is explained in terms of increased iron oxide content in the protective layers formed after the dissolution of a significant amount of zinc layer. Except phosphates the other water parameters (chlorides, sulphates, nitrates and TOC) do not exhibit any influence. The favourable influence of the iron oxide rich protective layers on the corrosion rate may get lost in waters very rich in carbon dioxide.
In sehr kohlensäurereichen Wässern entstehen keine schützenden eisenoxidreichen Deckschichten.
