Notes: Summary In the cathodization of palladium, when the final equilibrium concentrationn f of hydrogen does not exceed the maximum valuen αmax taken in the α-phase, a temporary formation of β-phase may take place, provided the current density is larger than a limiting valueJ m. An expression has been obtained forJ M which contains all the parameters characterizing the cathodization, as well as the absorption, diffusion and solution of hydrogen; the same expression contains also an adimensional function of the ratior=n f/n αmax, which has been tabulated for a wide range of cathodization processes, and has been approximated, in the whole definition range, by two elementary functions ofr.

Notes: Abstract. We describe some aspects of the Cahn-Hilliard and related equations. In particular we consider the dynamics of almost spherical interfaces and establish that almost spherical interfaces either persist forever or until they reach the boundary, a phenomenon which happens superslowly.

Notes: Abstract If the coexistence of two phases at the transition temperature is kept under observation for a long time, then one observes that the system is not exactly in equilibrium and a very slow evolution driven by surface tension is taking place. Theoretically, one should eventually see a spatially homogeneous state, but the time for settling down is so long that what one actually observes is “motion towards a stable state.” The complexity of the spatial distribution of the two phases keeps decreasing but appears to be stable for very long periods of time with intermittent periods of fast motion when there are small inclusions of one of the two regions embedded in the other phase. For a simple reaction diffusion model, it is shown that this phenomenon can be explained by investigating the flow on the attractor and the unstable manifolds of equilibria.

Notes: Abstract We consider a special class of monotone dynamical systems and show that in this special class the stable and unstable manifolds of two hyperbolic periodic orbits always intersect transversally. The proof is based on the existence of a family of positively invariant nested cones.

Notes: Summary All rigid motions of a wire forming a closed loop are determined under the hypothesis that the wire is inextensible, perfectly flexible and free of external forces. It is found that all rigid motions of the wire are uniform rotations and that there exist countably many non trivial configurations of the wire that are consistent with a rigid motion. All these configurations have multiple points.
