    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto L'interazione tra atomo di positronio e molecole di ossigeno, in esano saturo d'aria, è stata studiata mediante misure di vita media dell'ortopositronio e mediante un esperimento di spegnimento magnetico. I risultati indicano chea) l'ossigeno abbassa, di un fattore 1.6, la densità elettronica nell'origine del sistema legato elettrone-positone;b) il positonio si lega in un complesso a vita media molto corta con una costantek q =5.7·10−11 cm3 s−1;c) le collisioni di scambio del positonio con gli elettroni dell' O2 determinano transizioni orto-para caratterizzati da una costante γq=2.5 · 10-11 cm3 s−1.
    Abstract: Реэюме Иэмерения времени жиэни и эксперимент по магнитной эакалке исполъ-зуются для исследования роли, которую играет молекула O2 при распалде Ps в тексане. Полученные рэзулътаты показывают:a) O2 уменъшает вероятностъ пе-рекрытия |φ(O)|2 для взаимодействующей позитрон-электонной пары в Ps в 1.6 раза;b) Ps может реагироватъ с молекулой O2, образуя короткоживыщее соединение с постояннойk q=5.7·10−11 см3 c−1 иc) Ps может испытыватъ овменные соударения с не спаренныни электронами молекулы O2 с постоянной γq=2.5 · 10-11 см3 c−1.
    Notes: Summary The role played by the O2 molecule in the decay of Ps in air-saturated hexane was investigated by measurements of lifetime and by an experiment of magnetic quenching. The results indicate thata) O2 reduces the overlap probability |φ(O)|2 of the interacting positron-electron pair in Ps by a factor 1.6,b) Ps may react with the O2 molecule forming a short-lived compound with a rate constantk q=5.7·10−11 cm3 s−1 andc) it may undergo exchange collisions with unpaired electrons of the O2 molecule with a rate constant γq=2.5 · 10-11 cm3 s−1.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Misure di spegnimento magnetico hanno messo in evidenza una forte perturbazione sulla separazione iperfine del positronio generata da ioni diamagnetici in soluzione acquosa. Il valore della separazione iperfine risulta ridotto al 57% del corrispondente valore in vuoto. Questo risultato, interpretato sulla base del modello proposto da Urbanovich, indica tra l’altro l’esistenza di uno stato legato del positronio in acqua e nelle soluzioni esaminate.
    Notes: Summary A large perturbing effect of diamagnetic ions in aqueous solution on the positronium hyperfine splitting has been revealed through magnetic-quenching measurements. The hyperfine splitting amounts to ΔW=0.57 ΔW vac (at concentration ≥0.2 mol). This lowering, if interpreted on the basis of the model of Urbanovich, indicates that there exists a bound state of positronium in water and in aqueous solutions of diamagnetic ions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Misure di spegnimento magnetico del positronio in alcuni polimeri hanno messo in evidenza un effetto anormalmente alto a bassi campi (alcuni kG). Per interpretare i risultati sperimentali si formula l'ipotesi dell'esistenza, nello stesso campione, di due differenti tipi di Ps. Quello «normale» é caratterizzato da una separazione iperfine inferiore a quella del Ps libero per un fattore non superiore a 2; quello «anomalo» ha una separazione iperfine inferiore per un ordine di grandezza a quello del Ps libero.
    Notes: Summary An anomalously high magnetic quenching of positronium at low field (a few kG) has been revealed in certain polymeric materials. To interpret the experimental results, the existence in the same specimen of two Ps-like centres is suggested. The «normal» Ps-like centre is characterized by hyperfine splitting smaller by a factor not greater than 2 than that of free Ps. The «anomalous» one shows hyperfine splitting in an order of magnitude weaker than for free Ps.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto La formazione di positonio in vari polimeri è stata studiata in funzione di un campo elettrico statico. Al crescere dell'intensità del campo il rendimento del Ps, relativo a quello in campo nullo, dapprima diminuisce, passa attraverso un minimo— in alcuni casi anche molto piatto— poi risale rapidamente, supera l'unità e tende al valore di saturazione. I risultati sperimentali possono essere bene inquadrati in un modello composto che ammette formazione di Ps sia nell' «Ore gap» sia nello «spur». Il modello ha consentito di ricavare valori medi dei «rates» di scattering elastico e di perdita di energia di positoni, nonché di formazione di Ps sopra l'energia di soglia. Inoltre si sono ottenuti il contributo relativo dei due processi alla formazione di Ps in campo nullo e la distanza media positrone-elettrone nello «spur».
    Abstract: Резюме Исследуется образование позитрония как функция статического элек-трического поля в различных полимерах. При увеличении напряженности поля относительный выход образования позитрония проходит через минимум, который может быть очень плоским, затем резко увеличивается, превышает единицу и достигает величины насыщения. Экспериментальные результы могут обыть объяснены в рамках состтавной модели. Эта модель позволяет получить средние значения для упругого рассеяния позитрона и энергетических потерь, а также для скорости образовния позитрония выще пороговой энергии. Также определяется относительный бклад двух процессов б образование позитрония при нулевон поле и среднее расстояние между позитроном и электроном в пшуре.
    Notes: Summary The positronium formation was investigated as a function of a static electric field in various polymers. With increasing field strength the Ps relative yield at first declines, passes through a minimum which can be very flat, then rises rapidly, exceeds unity and approaches the saturation value. The experimental results can be well framed by a compound model which assumes that Ps formation occurs partly in the Ore gap and partly in the positron spur. This model enabled us to obtain mean values of the rates for positron elastic scattering and energy loss and for Ps formation above the threshold energy. The relative contribution of the two processes to Ps formation at zero field is also obtained together with the mean distance between positron and electron in the spur.

    Notes: Abstract – Fracture of nickel-titanium rotary files is an iatrogenic error which can seriously jeopardize root canal therapy. If a high-torque motor is used, the instrument-specific limit-torque (fracture limit) is often exceeded, thus increasing the risk of intracanal failure. A possible solution to this problem is to use a low-torque endodontic motor which operates below these values. If the torque is set just below the limit of elasticity for each instrument, the risk of fracture is likely to be markedly reduced. The purpose of this paper was to discuss mechanical properties of NiTi rotary instruments, the rationale for selecting low torque values, and to use clinically a new endodontic motor (step-motor) which operates below the limit of elasticity of each rotary file. The step-motor was found to be helpful in reducing the risk of instrument fracture. Irreversible material damage (plastic deformation) and instrument fracture were rarely seen. Low-torque instrumentation also increased tactile sense and, consequently, mental awareness of rotary instrumentation.
