Notes: The formation and growth of nanoscale silver clusters in silica matrices are studied by means of optical absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The metallic silver layer of the Ag/SiO2 couple was irradiated by argon ions for ion-beam mixing of silver with the silica matrix. Postannealing of the embedded Ag atoms in silica matrices results in the growth of Ag nanoclusters. The quadrupolar surface acoustic vibrational mode of the Ag nanoclusters has been observed in low-frequency Raman scattering experiments. The average size of these Ag nanoclusters is estimated from the quadrupolar mode frequency. Systematic growth of Ag nanoclusters embedded in silica matrices is observed with the increase of postannealing temperature. We have estimated the activation energy for the diffusion of Ag atoms in irradiated a-SiO2 from the coarsening of these embedded Ag atoms. Development of a peak at about 3 eV in the optical absorption spectra for the samples postannealed at higher temperatures corroborates further the growth of Ag nanoclusters in the silica matrices. New Raman modes at 1368 and 1573 cm−1 are observed in Ag embedded silica samples and the possible origin of these modes is discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Metamorphic pelitic assemblages, containing andalusite, garnet and staurolite, occur in the pre-Cambrian “Delhi System” of rocks in North-Eastern Rajasthan, India. Some of these assemblages have been studied petrographically and chemically in a selected area around Bairawas. It is suggested that metamorphism has been achieved in the area under conditions of relatively low pressure and high temperature. The assemblages do not strictly correspond to any known trend of regional metamorphism and can be best described as a type intermediate between “Barrovian”- and “Abukuma”-types. The possible paragenetic history of the mineral assemblages and the trend of metamorphism have been discussed.

Notes: Abstract The longitudinal anthropological age changes in a sample of coastal fishermen in West Bengal are discussed. The results show that some traits follow the trends observed in ageing of Western populations, for instance nasal length and breadth continue to increase throughout life in both sexes. Stature follows also the trend generally observed: a decrease occurs indeed from 35 years of age in both sexes, the decline is becoming higher with increasing age. The typical ecological conditions of our population influence the rate of change in other traits, such as weight and biacromial diameter. Weight is known to be influenced by the nutritional status and the way of life. It explains that in our study of males an early increase of weight and biacromial diameter is observed first and a decrease afterwards. In females, however, a decrease is observed already from 35 years of age. This kind of analysis was only possible with the help of longitudinal data and in a well defined population: only longitudinal data is free from the effect of secular changes and of selective death.

Notes: Summary Osmium(VI) forms a violet complex witho-hydroxythiobenzhydrazide in the pH range 5.4–6.4. The complex is readily extractable in chloroform to give a violet solution which can be employed for the photometry of osmium. The extract shows maximal absorption at 540–550 nm and obeys Beer's law over the concentration range 1.44–14.40μg Os ml−1.μg amounts of osmium can be determined witho-hydroxythiobenzhydrazide in the presence of considerable amounts of diverse ions commonly associated with the metal using EDTA as the masking agent. However, gold should be removed prior to the determination of osmium with the reagent. The molar extinction coefficient of the complex and the Sandell sensitivity are 1.18×104 l mole−1 cm−1 and 0.016μg cm−2 respectively.

Notes: Summary Four organic thiohydrazides, e. g.,α-naphthalenethiocarboxhydrazide, 2-pyrrolethiocarboxhydrazide, 2-furanthiocarboxhydrazide and 2-thiophenethiocarboxhydrazide are employed as reagents for the spectrophotometric determination of ruthenium, rhenium, osmium and platinum in the presence of considerable excess of diverse metal ions commonly associated with them. The coloured complexes, formed by the reagents with the metals, are stable for more than 12 hr and follow Beer's law at the wavelength of maximum absorbance. The molar absorptivities are in the 104 range for the metal complexes studied.
