Notes: [Auszug] We identify a cytochrome P450 gene (CYP6AE14) from cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), which permits this herbivore to tolerate otherwise inhibitory concentrations of the cotton metabolite, gossypol. CYP6AE14 is highly expressed in the midgut and its expression correlates with larval growth ...

Notes: In the present study, n-type (Bi2Se3)x(Bi2Te3)1-x crystals with various chemical compositionswere fabricated by the zone melting method. Thermoelectric properties, including Seebeck coefficient(α), electrical conductivity (σ) and thermal conductivity (κ), were measured in the temperature range of300-500 K. The influence of the variations of Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 content on thermoelectric properties wasstudied. The increase of Bi2Se3 content (x) caused an increase in carrier concentration and thus anincrease of σ and a decrease of α. The maximum figure of merit (ZT = α2σT/κ) of 0.87 was obtained atabout 325 K for the composition of 93%Bi2Te3-7%Bi2Se3 with doping TeI4

Notes: Anisometric KSr2Nb5O15 (KSN) particles were synthesized by molten salt method with SrCO3,Nb2O5 and KCl as raw materials. With K2CO3, SrCO3 and Nb2O5 starting materials, KSN lead-freepiezoelectric ceramics were prepared by conventional ceramics technique and reactive templated graingrowth (RTGG) method, respectively. In the RTGG process, green compacts were fabricated by tapecastingusing anisometric KSN as template particles. The KSN particles prepared by molten salt methodwere rodlike in shape and dense. The KSN ceramics prepared by RTGG not only had higher degree ofgrain orientation but higher sintered density compared with that prepared by solid-state reaction

Notes: B2O3 doped ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3-based varistors were fabricated by conventional solid statereaction method. The structure and electrical properties were investigated by XRD, SEM and electricalmeasurements. The grain size obviously increases with increasing B2O3 content, while the content ofZn7Sb2O12 spinel on the grain boundaries gradually decreases, which implies that B2O3 doping inhibits thegrowth of Zn7Sb2O12 spinel. The density (ρ) of ZnO varistors increases with increasing B2O3 content (x)and reaches the maximum at x = 0.4 mol%. The sample with x ≈ 0.6 mol% sintered at 1150 °C exhibits thebest performance, with nonlinear coefficient of 48 and leakage current of 4 μA

Notes: Abstract Transposition of the Anthirrinum majus Tam3 element and the Zea mays Ac element has been monitored in petunia and tobacco plants. Plant vectors were constructed with the transposable elements cloned into the leader sequence of a marker gene. Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated leaf disc transformation was used to introduce the transposable element constructs into plant cells. In transgenic plants, excision of the transposable element restores gene expression and results in a clearly distinguishable phenotype. Based on restored expression of the hygromycin phosphotransferase II (HPTII) gene, we established that Tam3 excises in 30% of the transformed petunia plants and in 60% of the transformed tobacco plants. Ac excises from the HPTII gene with comparable frequencies (30%) in both plant species. When the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene was used to detect transposition of Tam3, a significantly lower excision frequency (13%) was found in both plant species. It could be shown that deletion of parts of the transposable elements Tam3 and Ac, removing either one of the terminal inverted repeats (TIR) or part of the presumptive transposase coding region, abolished the excision from the marker genes. This demonstrates that excision of the transposable element Tam3 in heterologous plant species, as documented for the autonomous element Ac, also depends on both properties. Southern blot hybridization shows the expected excision pattern and the reintegration of Tam3 and Ac elements into the genome of tobacco plants.

Notes: Abstract Irradiation of etiolated Arabidopsis or pea, or dim-red-light-grown pea seedlings with a single, short (under 10 s) pulse of blue light (threshold at 0.1 µmol/m2) is sufficient to induce the expression of specific members of the Lhcb gene family including the pea Lhcb1*4 gene and the Arabidopsis Lhcb1*3 gene. Other Lhcb genes, such as the pea Lhcb1*3 gene and the Arabidopsis Lhcb1*1 and 1*2 genes are unaffected by this blue-light treatment. Transgenic Arabidopsis bearing pea Lhcb1*3::Gus (β-glucuronidase), pea Lhcb1*4::Gus or Arabidopsis Lhcb1*3::Gus constructs were used to determine if pea and Arabidopsis employ a similar mechanism to achieve blue-light induced Lhcb expression. Examination of the respective Gus expression patterns in white-light-grown seedlings indicates that the pea promoters are active and properly expressed in the Arabidopsis background. Irradiation of dark-grown Arabidopsis with a 20 s pulse of blue light with a total fluence of 100 µmol/m-2 results in expression of the pea Lhcb1*4::Gus (β-glucuronidase) construct, but not of the pea Lhcb1*3::Gus construct indicating that the pea promoters respond correctly to blue light in the Arabidopsis background. Fluence-response, time-course and reciprocity characteristics for the blue-light-induced expression of the pea Lhcb1*4::Gus construct closely resemble those of the endogenous Arabidopsis Lhcb genes, confirming the proper interpretation of the Arabidopsis blue-light-signaling mechanism by the pea Lhcb1*4 promoter and suggesting that the signaling mechanisms in the two plants are very similar, if not identical. Fluence response data for the steady-state level of transcript derived from an Arabidopsis Lhcb1*3::Gus construct extending 200 bp upstream of the site of transcription indicate that the blue light responsive element(s) are contained within this 200 bp region.

Notes: Abstract Latexin, a carboxypeptidase A inhibitor, is expressed in a cell type-specific manner in both central and peripheral nervous systems in the rat. It is used as a molecular marker for the regional specification of the neocortex. In this study, a cDNA was isolated from a human fetal brain cDNA library. The cDNA (LXN) contains an open reading frame encoding 222 amino acids. The comparison between the deduced amino acid sequences of LXN and latexins of rat and mouse revealed high sequence identity (84.2 and 84.7%, respectively). Northern blot analysis showed that LXN was expressed as a transcript of 1.3 kb in 15 out of 16 tissues examined, except in peripheral blood leukocyte. The expression levels were high in heart, prostate, ovary, kidney, pancreas, and colon, moderate or low in other tissues including brain. It is noteworthy that the tissue distribution of human LXN differs greatly to that of its homologue in the model animal, rat latexin. In addition, the LXN gene contains at least 6 exons and spans 5.9 kb according to the genomic sequence of the clone RP11-79M21 and the gap sequence cloned in this paper. LXN was assigned to 3q25-q26.2 according to the position of the marker SHGC-35682 found adjacent to LXN gene.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate on stone ground wood (SGW) of masson pine was investigated. The effect of lignin on grafting was carefully examined The phenolic hydroxyl groups of lignin were found to accelerate the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and graft copolymerization of lignocellulose when minor ferrous ions were added to the system. Nevertheless, the α-hydroxyl groups of lignin had no great influence on grafting. Also, the graft copolymerization could be initiated with low ferrous ions to the hydrogen peroxide molar ratio, and, additionally, the lignin was observed to be more suitable for grafting than was the hollocellulose.
