Notes: Abstract  Seven types of insoluble dietary fiber from five different sources (soy, rice, oat, corn and sugar beet) were used to fortify sweetened plain yogurt. Fiber addition caused an acceleration in the acidification rate of the experimental group yogurts, and most of the fortified yogurts also showed increases in their apparent viscosity. Soy I and sugar beet fibers caused a significant decrease in viscosity due to partial syneresis. In general, fiber addition led to lower overall flavor and texture scores. A grainy flavor and a gritty texture were intense in all fiber-fortified yogurts, except in those made with oat fiber. Oat II fiber gave the best results; differences with controls in terms of flavor quality scores not being statistically significant. The evolution of organic acids during the fermentation and cold storage of control and oat-II-fiber-fortified yogurts showed a similar pattern; only acetic and propionic acids were found in significantly higher amounts in the fiber- fortified product.

Notes: Abstract The International Germanium Experiment (IGEX) has now analyzed 117 mol yr of data from its isotopically enriched (86% 76Ge) germanium detectors. Applying pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to the more recent data, the lower bound on the half-life for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge is deduced: T 1/2(0ν)〉1.57×1025 yr (90% C.L.). This corresponds to an upper bound on the Majorana neutrino mass parameter, 〈m ν〉, between 0.33 eV and 1.35 eV depending on the choice of theoretical nuclear matrix elements used in the analysis.

Notes: Summary The release of insulin during incubation of mouse islets of Langerhans, isolated after digestion of the pancreas with collagenase, has been studied, and the influence of various factors on the rate of release investigated. Glucose at 3.0 mg/ml (high glucose) stimulated insulin release, but had no effect at 0.6 mg/ml (low glucose). Mannoheptulose blocked the stimulation by high glucose, as did adrenaline. The adrenaline effect was abolished by phentolamine, an alpha-adrenergic blocking agent. Glucagon alone, stimulated insulin release, and also with low glucose, but not consistently with high glucose. Adrenaline abolished the stimulation by glucagon. Theophylline stimulated release with low glucose, much less so with high glucose and not at all with glucagon at either glucose concentration. Tolbutamide stimulated release with low glucose, and this effect was not inhibited by adrenaline. The suitability of this preparation for studies of islet cell metabolism and its relationship to secretion of insulin is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Cerebral angiopathy of the postpartum period is a rare entity, sometimes promoted by vasoconstrictives drug prescription. Its clinical presentation includes headaches, seizures and focal neurological deficits, which develop shortly after a normal pregnancy. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and angiography, showing multiple narrowing of the intracranial cerebral arteries. This neurological feature is reversible and the clinical outcome is good. We report a case of benign cerebral angiopathy in a 20-year-old woman in the postpartum period, occurring after administration of sumatriptan and ergot derivates.

Notes: Abstract Septic deep venous thrombosis is a major complication associated with central venous catheterization in intensive care units. The most common causative organisms are Staphylococcus aureus, gram-negative bacilli and Candida species. The incidence of Candida infections is increasing, especially in intensive care patients receiving total parenteral nutrition and long-term broad-spectrum antibiotics. Although intravascular catheter-induced septic thrombophlebitis is quite common, superior vena cava obstruction is a rare complication. However, few data exist concerning the best strategy for managing septic thrombophlebitis, especially when medical therapy fails. We report successful surgical management of Candida albicans suppurative thrombosis of the superior vena cava in a young patient.

Notes: Abstract We report three cases of esophageal obstruction due to solidification of enteral feed refluxed from the stomach in patients being fed through a nasogastric tube. All three patients were administered sucralfate continuously by tube. The few previous descriptions of this rare complication have also implicated sucralfate with its pathogenesis. Given its clinical importance and the growing use of long-term enteral nutrition, this adverse event needs to be considered.

Notes: Abstract Oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis of a plasmid containing the lytA gene coding for the pneumococcal amidase has allowed the separation of the coding sequence of the gene. This sequence has been placed in plasmid pIN-III(lppP-5)-A3 downstream from both a modified lipoprotein promoter and the lactose promoter to construct the recombinant plasmid pGL100. When Escherichia coli RB 791 (pGL100) was grown in the presence of lactose, the pneumococcal amidase accounted for 7% of the total protein present in this strain after 18 h incubation at 37°C. The overproduced amidase was purified in a single-step procedure using a choline-Sepharose 6B column taking advantage of the fact that this enzyme was the unique protein with affinity for choline present in extracts obtained from E. coli RB791 (pGL100). The development of the above design opens up the possibility of studying the mechanism that regulates the activity of this important autolysin by using physicochemical techniques that require the availability of high amounts of purified amidase.
