Notes: Abstract Ten isolates of six species of ectomycorrhizal fungi were grown in vitro at nine concentrations of three sodium salts (NaCl, Na2SO4, Na3C6H5O7) for 4 weeks. Colony diamater, biomass and protein content of fungi were evaluated. Isolates of Pisolithus tinctorius and Suillus luteus were more tolerant of NaCl and Na2SO4 than of Na3C6H5O7. Fungi in the genera Cenococcum, Laccaria, and Thelephora were highly intolerant of Na3C6H5O7 and Na2SO4 in vitro. Biomass and protein content of fungi generally declined with increasing substrate salinity in solution culture. In situ ectomycorrhizal colonization by Laccara laccata and P. tinctorius and the dry weight of Pinus taeda seedlings were significantly reduced by 80 mM NaCl after 14 weeks. Only select ectomycorrhizal fungi appear capable of growth and symbiosis in saline soils.

Notes: The study objective was to determine the fuelwood harvesting rotation and magnitude of nutrient accumulation by the sodic tolerant species Dalbergia sissoo and Prosopis juliflora for the rehabilitation of sodic wastelands. Mean annual increment and current annual increment growth of these trees reached a peak in six-year-old stands. Leaves dominated the litter of these species and contained high concentrations of most nutrients. N, Ca, Mg, and Fe were present in larger concentrations than other nutrients. Organic carbon additions at harvest after six years averaged 16 Mg ha−1, while soil pH was reduced from 9.8 to 8.6. Exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) values decreased 65 and 29% under P. juliflora and D. sissoo, respectively, after harvest. These tree species produced significant root spread and deep penetration and were able to rehabilitate sodic soil effectively.

Notes: Summary A pseudo-similarity solution has been obtained for the flow of an incompressible fluid of second grade past a wedge. The numerical method developed for this purpose enables computation of the flow characteristics for any value of the parametersK anda, whereK is the dimensionless normal stress modulus of the fluid, anda is related to the wedge angle. Results computed forKx wa varying from 0 to 200 show a marked decrease or increase in wall shear, depending upon the wedge angle, asx −2a /K increases from 0 to about 1; thereafter the change in wall shear stress is small. The present results match exactly with those from an earlier perturbation analysis forKx 2a ≦0.01 but differ significantly asKx 2a increases.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer absorption of Fe57 in synthetically grown crystals of FeS2 (marcasite) has been studied in ab and bc planes as a function of orientation of the crystal axes with respect to the unpolarised γ-ray beam. The analysis of peak intensity area ratios of the quadrupole split spectra yields the principal axis values, the asymmetry parameter, and the direction cosines of the efg with respect to the crystal axes.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy is a useful technique for characterizing the valencies, electronic and magnetic states, coordination symmetries and site occupancies of the cation. The Mössbauer parameters of isomer shift and quadrupole splitting are useful to distinguish paramagnetic ferrous and ferric iron in several substances, while the internal magnetic field provides information on the crystallinity. In recent years artificial neural networks have shown to be a powerful technique to solve problems of pattern recognition of a mineral from its Mössbauer spectrum, Mössbauer parameters data bank, crystalline structure and magnetic phases of soil from Mössbauer parameters. A computer software named Mössbauer Effect Assistant has been developed. It uses learning vector quantization neural network linked to a Mössbauer data bank that contains Mössbauer parameters of isomer shift, quadrupole spliting, internal magnetic field and the references of the substances. The program identifies the substance under study and/or its crystalline structure when fed with experimental Mössbauer parameters. It can also list the references from the literature by feeding the name of the substance or the author of the publication. Typical application of Mössbauer Effect Assistant in iron-bearing materials Mössbauer spectroscopy is present in user friendly Microsoft Windows environment.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectral (MS) and magnetic investigations on the products obtained by annealing coprecipitated La(III) and Fe(III) (atomic ratio 1∶9) oxyhydroxide gel to different temperatures in the range 100 to 1250°C are reported. The annealing temperatures were chosen on the basis of thermal analysis data. It is observed that the thermal behaviour of the bulk ferric gel is significantly influenced by La(III) incorporation. A quadrupole split doublet observed in the MS of the gel annealed from 100°C persists up to 570°C and for samples annealed from 850°C and above it is not discernable. However, a six-fingered hyperfine split pattern emerges even for the gel heated to 150°C indicating the onset of short-range ordering.H n values ranging from 495 to 519 kOe for the samples heated to 570°C are in agreement with that for α-Fe2O3, however, their magnetic susceptibility per gram (χg) of the order of 10−3 e.m.u. appears to be high for such systems. Annealing the gel from 850°C and above results in anH n of about 526 kOe which is in better agreement with that of LaFeO3, but the χg value falls to about 10−5 e.m.u.

Notes: Abstract In the present report we propose the automation of least square fitting of Mössbauer spectra, the identification of the substance, its crystal structure and the access to the references with the help of a genetic algorith, Fuzzy logic, and the artificial neural network associated with a databank of Mössbauer parameters and references. This system could be useful for specialists and non-specialists, in industry as well as in research laboratories.
