Description / Table of Contents: Summary Blastoid transformation and proliferation of lymphocytes can be observed in mixed cultures of human white blood cells of different donors. This transformation occurs in the absence of phytohaemagglutinin or specific antigens. Observations on reciprocal activation of anisogeneic human lymphocytes of peripheral blood are supplemented by results on mixed cultures of spleen lymphocytes from the mouse and guinea-pig. It should be stressed that reciprocal lymphocytic activation is not limited to a species, but occurs in intra- and interspecific combinations from different donors. This effect can be observed in animals which show no or only a conditioned phytohaemagglutinin-response of lymphocytes. The blastoid cells occuring in homologous and heterologous mixed lymphocyte cultures display the same cytologic characteristics as the human blastoid cells induced by phytohaemagglutinin or antigenic stimulation. Cytogenetic methods provide means of identification of the individual origin of blastoid cells by using simple cytogenetic (chromosomal) markers in the different sexes or species of the donors. Thus it can be stated that mixed lymphocytic reaction leads to a mutual or two-way activation of the lymphocytes of both donors. The mixed lymphocytic reaction seems to represent a immunocytological reaction based on a membrane-bound antigen-antibody interaction of competent lymphocytes.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a neural network model whose structure is designed to closely fit neuroanatomical and-physiological data, and not to be most suitable for rigorous mathematical analysis. It is shown by computer simulation that a process of self-organization that departs from a fixed retinotopic order at peripheral layers and includes hebbian modifications of synaptic connectivity at higher processing levels leads to a system that is capable of mimicking various functions of visual systems: In the initial state the overall structure of the network is preset, individual connections at higher levels are randomly selected and their strength is initialized with random numbers. For this model the outcome of the self-organization process is determined by the stimulation during the developmental phase. Depending on the type of stimuli used the model can either develop towards a featureselective “preprocessor” stage in a complex vision system or towards a subsystem for associative recall of abstract patterns. This flexibility supports the hypothesis that the principles embodied are rather universal and can account for the development of various nervous system structures.

Notes: Abstract Structure of epitaxially grown gold films of varying thickness (10–1000Å) has been investigated using LEED, AES, resistivity measurements and X-ray diffraction analysis. Silicon 111-oriented crystals, which are prehandled to exhibit $$\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3 R 30^\circ $$ -supersctructure in the LEED pattern, serve as substrates. The gold films show a homogeneous structure with smooth surfaces and a marked (111)-orientation. The use of silicon substrates, however, is complicated by the fact, that silicon diffuses through the gold films to a small extent even at room temperature.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1.
Notes: Abstract 1. Standard values for total protein (Biuret method), cellulose acetate electrophoresis, and for 16 individual proteins were elaborated from the results obtained from 280 normal sera (20 mothers during delivery, 260 children from birth to the age of fifteen years). For statistical reasons these sera were divided into 14 equally sized age-groups. The individual proteins were determined immunochemically by means of Oudin's linear immunodiffusion method. 2. The arithmetic mean x and standard deviations s were calculated with a confidence level of 95.45% for each protein or protein fraction, as well as the geometric mean Mg for the proteins, which are normally distributed in a logarithmic way. Variance analysis with a given probability of error of α=0.001 showed statistically significant age differences for all proteins except for β2-glycoprotein I. 3. The values obtained for total protein showed an obvious decrease during pregnancy and in cord serum, a further drop during the first three months, which is followed by a continuous rise up to the age of 15 years. 4. The decrease of alpha- and beta-globulins during pregnancy was confirmed with cellulose-acetate-membrane electrophoresis. Alpha 2 and beta-globulins were significantly lower in cord serum; the physiological hypogammaglobulinemia was most marked during the age of two to six months. The standard values obtained with cellulose-acetate membrane electrophoresis corresponded for all protein fractions approximately to those reported for paper electrophoresis. 5. To summarize the whole project, the following findings were made by quantitative determination of 16 different proteins using Oudin's linear immunodiffusion method: beta-lipoprotein, alpha 1-anti-trypsin, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, and beta 1C-beta 1A globulins increased during pregnancy, while the acid alpha 1-glycoprotein decreased. Cord serum showed a lower level of pre-albumin, acid alpha 1-glycoprotein, alpha 1- and beta lipoprotein, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, beta 1C-beta 1A globulin and IgM. Haptoglobin and IgA were almost regularly non-detectable in cord blood. The different proteins reached adult levels at different times during childhood.

Notes: Abstract Fifteen serum proteins were estimated by linear immunodiffusion in blood samples from children with acute hepatitis. Blood was drawn at the beginning of the disease and three weeks later. The results were compared with results obtained from a group of age-matched normal children. At the beginning of the disease prealbumin and beta-2-glycoprotein I were depressed, whereas alpha-1-acid-glycoprotein, alpha-1-antitrypsin, ceruloplasmin and alpha-2-HS-glycoprotein were found to be elevated. Alpha-2-macroglobulin, transferrin and beta-lipoprotein showed a significant elevation after three weeks. Beta-1-A/C, IgM and IgG remained elevated during the time of observation. Albumin, haptoglobin and IgA were similar in patients and controls and did not change during the period of observation.

Notes: Abstract In a prospective study, 44 children receiving Adriamycin (ADR) for various neoplastic diseases underwent serial estimations of the systolic time intervals (STI) for the noninvasive assessment of left ventricular myocardial performance. Five of the 44 children developed clinical signs of ADR-related congestive heart failure at a cumulative dose of less than 550 mg/m2 body surface area. Clinical symptoms, changes in the electrocardiogram and in the chest X-ray were preceded in every case by changes of the STI, mainly a prolongation of the left ventricular pre-ejection period (PEP), or a decrease of the ejection time (ET)/pre-ejection period (PEP) ratio (ET/PEP). A continous increase of the PEP and a decrease of the ET/PEP-ratio also gave an indication of myocardial dysfunction during ADR treatment in the other children without clinical signs of congestive heart failure. This subclinical cardiotoxic effect of ADR below the critical cumulative dose of 550 mg/m2 was observed in children with pre-existent myocardial damage, with preceding thoracic irradiation, or during concurrent chemotherapy, of which cyclophosphamide seemed to be most important. Thus, the estimation of the STI proved helpful and reliable in the early detection of incipient heart failure and in the selection of high risk patients in children receiving ADR treatment.
