After a short review of methods for the determination of the biomass concentration in fermentation broths the construction and working principle of a newly developed retroreflective photometer are described. The main advantages of the instrument are a wide range from 0.1 to 200 g biomass/l the sterilizability, the self-cleaning of the cuvette-window, a favourable design and a little maintenance. The device may be used directly at a fermenter to get a continuous singal or for measurement of single samples in the laboratory. The calibration curves are nearly linear in a wide range.
