Notes: A numerical analysis of the flow pattern in the inlet region of a circular pipe rotating steadily about an axis parallel to its own is presented. Both finite cell and finite element methods are used to analyse the problem and they give qualitatively similar results which show that a swirling fluid motion is induced in the pipe inlet region. The analyses show that the direction of swirl is opposite to that of the pipe rotation when viewed along the flow axis and that its magnitude depends on the speed of pipe rotation and throughflow Reynolds number. Neither numerical analysis predicts the marked upturn in friction factor (or pressure drop) which has been observed experimentally. However, a dependence on the pipe inlet boundary conditions is demonstrated.

Notes: The analysis presented herein deals with the evaluation of pressure and temperature fields which are generated in thin fluid films of varying thickness. The particular problem of a misaligned journal bearing has been studied by solving simultaneously the Reynolds and energy equations, which also include the effects of viscous dissipation and the variation of fluid viscosity with temperature. The method has been used to predict pressure and temperature fields as well as global performance parameters for a typical journal bearing operation.

Notes: A finite element numerical modelling procedure for simulating combined flow and heat transfer in a squeeze casting process is developed where the flow model is based on simple mass conservation. The coincident node method is used to model the thermal interface with metal advancement over the relatively colder die surface. The effect of pressure on the solidus and liquidus temperatures is built in based on the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and the thermophysical properties of enthalpy and thermal conductivity are affected by this pressure. For the casting material concerned, the effect of pressure on thermophysical properties was found to be small, having only a marginal effect on the part solidification.

Notes: This paper presents a numerical routine to compute the contact characteristics of elastomer layered cylinders lubricated by isoviscous liquids. The indentation of the elastic layer is calculated from boundary integral equations which are solved by linear and quadratic boundary element methods for a finite plane model and a circular representation of the junction. The hydrodynamic equation is also transformed into a boundary integral equation and solved by Simpson's rule. Some factors which possibly affect numerical accuracy are examined. Examples for finite plane and circular layer are analysed with reference to parameters for printing press roller contact, in which results are obtained for the indentation, film thickness and liquid pressure, as well as internal stresses through the simultaneous solution of the elasticity and hydrodynamic equations. The results show that high precision is easily achieved and the method is efficient for such layered problems.
