Notes: Summary Mucosubstances of epithelial cells of the chick embryo gallbladder were investigated by histochemical methods from days 12–21 of incubation (stages 38–46). On incubation day 14, only neutral mucins were detected; on day 15, neutral and sulfated mucosubstances were observed in the epithelial cells that invaginate the underlying mesenchyme. In the same sites, at day 16 of incubation, neutral, carboxylated and sulfated mucins were seen. From the 17th day of incubation until hatching, neutral, carboxylated and sulfated mucosubstances were present in the surface cells and in the cells lining the epithelial invaginations. During this period, the chemical characteristics of the secretory material are similar to those observed by Yamada and Hoshino (1972) in the fowl.

Notes: Summary Fragments of mesonephros were taken from chick embryos and studied from the 4th to the 21st day of incubation. A battery of seven different horseradish peroxidase-labelled lectins was used to study the distribution of carbohydrate residues in glycoconjugates along the mesonephric nephron during the period of excretory activity and the period of involution. ConA and WGA reacted at every site of the nephron thus showing the ubiquitous presence of α-D-mannose andN-acetyl-d-glucosamine. SBA was a good marker of the proximal tubule. Other lectins, such as PNA and LTA, reacted only for a short time at some sites during the considered period of incubation. The presence of sialic acid was detected in the podocytes, capillary wall and mesangial cells. From the 10th-11th day of incubation changes were noted in the proximal tubule as shown by PNA reactivity. This may be significant as regards the exact stage of incubation during which the involution of mesonephros begins.

Notes: Synopsis Cellular histamine in blood and bone marrow has been identified histochemically using ano-phthaldialdehyde fluorescence reaction. The specificity of the reaction was tested by a spectrofluorometric analysis of cell extracts. In normal blood, the basophils emit a bright yellow fluorescence, whereas neutrophils, eosinophils and platelets react less consistently and when they do, they give off a less intense yellow or blue emission. In normal marrow, basophils react strongly whereas the metamyelocytes and later granular cells show only a weak yellow or blue fluorescence. In chronic myeloid leukaemia, cells of the granular series emit a strong yellow fluorescence at all stages of development, although still less intense than the basophils. During remission, the fluorescence pattern of cells from leukaemic subjects reverts to that of normal cells.

Notes: The steady state flow problem known in magnetohydrodynamics as Hartmann's flow is converted into variational formulation and is given an approximate solution by means of the spline blended interpolation technique. The equations of motion consist of two coupled potential flow problems with homogeneous boundary conditions. The spline blended interpolation method is reduced here, because of the shape of the domain, to a cartesian product of cardinal splines with trigonometric or ordinary polynomials. ‘Exact’ boundary conditions are presented by the blending technique. The numerical results indicate that high accuracy is possible with relatively few unknowns.

Notes: Interpolation techniques are reviewed in the context of the approximation of the solution of boundary value problems. From the variational formulation, the approximation error norm is related to the interpolation error norm.Among global interpolation techniques, bicubic splines and spline-blended are reviewed; among local, Hermite's and ‘serendipity’ polynomials. The corresponding interpolation error norms are computed numerically on two test functions. The methods are compared for accuracy and for number of operations required in the solution of boundary value problems. The conclusion is that spline interpolation is most convenient for regular hyper-elements, while high precision finite elements become convenient for very fine or irregular partition.
