Notes: Abstract A direct measurement of the electron-density time evolution in the active medium of a self-sustained XeCl laser discharge has been performed by means of the holographic interferometry technique. The time and space resolved behaviour of the discharge seems to confirm that the halogen depletion instability and the hot spots developing in the cathode region are the basic mechanisms which determine the premature termination of the output laser pulse.

Notes: Summary Following the incidental discovery of a bilateral coracoclavicular joint, the authors undertook a radiologic study including helical CT scan and MRI. The 3D SDD images obtained are to the best of the knowledge of the authors, the first 3D radiographic representation of these joints. The supposed embryology and distribution of these joints are also discussed.

Notes: Summary The secretion of various pancreatic hormones (insulin, glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide) is affected to a different extent by the cholinergic system. In 7 healthy subjects the effects of treatment for 1 week with pirenzepine, an anticholinergic drug selective for muscarinic receptors, on basal secretion of these hormones and on that induced by i.v. glucose (IVGTT) and arginine were evaluated. The drug did not reduce basal levels of insulin and glucagon whereas it caused an appreciable reduction in basal pancreatic polypeptide (PP). The responses of insulin and blood glucose to IVGTT and to arginine were not changed by treatment, nor was that of plasma glucagon to arginine. The infusion of arginine did induce an increase in PP level, which reached a statistically significant maximum at 90 min. This response was not particularly different after administration of pirenzepine. Thus, the results confirm the finding that arginine stimulates PP secretion in vivo and that pirenzepine reduces the basal level of the hormone, whereas it did not appear to affect the response to arginine. The findings exclude any direct action of the drug on insulin or glucagon secretion or on glucose metabolism in general.

Notes: Summary A new high-powered ultraviolet laser system is proposed. The system doubles the infrared light from a Nd-Yag laser mode-locked at 100 MHz, injects this light into a storage-ring cavity to accumulate a high power in the visible and then doubles this into the ultraviolet at 2600 Å. The power levels anticipated at this wavelength are much larger than those of commercially available c.w. lasers. The new system can have a far-reaching impact in basic research and, even more so, in a great many industrial applications.

Notes: Summary The construction and the operating characteristics of a X-ray preionized discharge XeCl laser are described. A specific laser output energy of 3.3 J/l with a pulsewidth of 150 ns and a spatial beam uniformity better than 90% in a (3.5×3.5) cm2 cross-section was achieved. Intrinsic efficiency up to 3.6% has been obtained without the use of an external prepulse circuit. A fast, high-voltage prepulse to intensify the preionization has been successfully tried out, obtaining a better energy coupling to the gas and more reliable conditions at lower working voltage.

Notes: Summary The small signal gain and absorption coefficients of a high uniformity, X-ray preionized XeCl laser have been measured. Their time evolution and wavelength dependence have been simultaneously detected with high resolution. Two distinct estimates of the saturation intensity were obtained by means of a Rigrod-type analysis of the intracavity intensity and by using saturated gain measurements.

Notes: Abstract The two key enzymes of denitrification, the nitrate and nitrate reductases, were studied in a marine organism, Pseudomonas nautica, strain 617. Both enzymes were grown under anaerobic conditions with either nitrate or nitrous oxide as electron acceptor. The effect of sodium on these enzymes was studied. Only sodium activated the membranous and purified nitrate reductase, and none of the salts affected nitrite reductase.
