Notes: Summary Using isolated head perfused at constant flow rates, close to those occurringin vivo, the movement of tritiated water through the gill epithelium of the trout,Salmo gairdneri was studied. The analysis of the curves of loading and unloading of tritiated water between the gill epithelium and the external and internal media shows two exponentials with different slopes in each medium. As the rapid exponentials have identical slopes, the external medium, the gill epithelium, and the perfusion medium constitute a system of three compartments in series for water exchanges. The kinetic analysis of rapid exponentials allowed us to calculate the characteristics of water movement through the apical and basal membrane and the size of the pool of water participating in the exchange mechanism. When the trout head is perfused without adrenaline, the permeability of the apical membrane to water is about 8 times higher than that of the basal membrane, the latter constituting the limiting factor for water diffusion. When the trout head is perfused with a perfusion medium containing 10−5 m adrenaline this hormone produces a double action: it leads to a comparable increase in the permeability of both the apical and basal membranes and also increases the size of the water transport pool by a factor of four.

Notes: Abstract A study of the mechanism of exchange regulation between the different calcium pools in freshwater lamellibranch mantle shows: 1) that the substances concerned in this regulation, namely the calcium reserves and carbonic anhydrase, must be topographically in close proximity, 2) that the calcium reserves occur as small extracellular calcified granules localised in the interstitial tissue of the mantle (evidence both from experiments on homogenates and from histological examination), and 3) that observations on the sedimentation in mantle homogenates suggest that the enzyme is bound to the calcified granules. The role of such an enzyme-substrate unit is discussed.

Notes: This paper reports the results from a second characterisation of the 91500 zircon, including data from electron probe microanalysis, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and laser fluorination analyses. The focus of this initiative was to establish the suitability of this large single zircon crystal for calibrating in situ analyses of the rare earth elements and oxygen isotopes, as well as to provide working values for key geochemical systems. In addition to extensive testing of the chemical and structural homogeneity of this sample, the occurrence of banding in 91500 in both backscattered electron and cathodoluminescence images is described in detail. Blind intercomparison data reported by both LA-ICP-MS and SIMS laboratories indicate that only small systematic differences exist between the data sets provided by these two techniques. Furthermore, the use of NIST SRM 610 glass as the calibrant for SIMS analyses was found to introduce little or no systematic error into the results for zircon. Based on both laser fluorination and SIMS data, zircon 91500 seems to be very well suited for calibrating in situ oxygen isotopic analyses.

Notes: Proxicromil is a compound shown in biological tests to have anti-allergic properties. It is well absorbed in humans after oral administration. In order to assess its anti-allergic activity in humans, experiments were carried out in asthmatic patients to investigate its inhibitory effects upon the bronchoconstrictor response to antigen challenge. Two controlled experiments were carried out according to randomized double blind crossover designs, in each of which ten selected patients were pretreated orally with proxicromil before being challenged with inhaled doses of antigen. Inhibition of the immediate response to antigen challenge by single and repeated doses was measured by intermittent recordings of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) for 30 minutes after challenge. The duration of action of proxicromil and studied by varying the time between administration of the last dose given and inhalation of the antigen. The results showed that proxicromil significantly protected patients against the immediate response to challenge, and possessed a long duration of action of at least 12 hours.

Notes: Patients with allergic alveolitis to various antigens, asymptomatic exposed individuals and healthy control subjects were studied. The lymphocyte transformation test and the formation of two lymphokines were shown to be positive in almost all affected subjects and only rarely in asymptomatic exposed individuals. In most symptomatic subjects, the presence of antigen-antibody complexes could be demonstrated. However, such complexes were also present in six of the nine asymptomatic exposed individuals having precipitating antibodies.Factor(s) released from sensitized monocytes strongly facilitate the in vitro formation of specific antibodies but are poorly effective when incubated with cells from asymptomatic exposed subjects or normal individuals.

Notes: A large range of immunological investigations in patients with extrinsic or intrinsic asthma showed higher leucocyte counts in intrinsic asthma. Blood sputum eosinophilia were almost equally frequent.Immediate skin responses to inhalant antigens are seldom present in intrinsic asthma, but delayed responses to bacterial antigens, endotoxins, Candida albicans and aspiryl–PPL are frequently positive. This correlates with the frequent presence of precipitins and in vitro stimulation of lymphocytes, and the production of macrophage migration inhibition factor by most of these substances. These results suggest that bacterial factors may play a prominent role as aetiological agents in at least some cases of intrinsic asthma. In intrinsic asthma there was a high incidence of tissue autoantibodies, whereas the incidence was negligible in patients with atopic asthma. The level of serum immunoglobulins was not statistically different between the two groups of patients except for IgE.The patients with intrinsic asthma showed a favorable response to sodium cromoglycate.
