Summary Renin concentration (Brown et al. [3,4]) and protein concentration in plasma and urine were measured in 8 nephrotic patients and in 12 patients without abnormal proteinuria. The mean value of the ratios of „specific renin-activities“ (rein-concentration:protein-concentration) in urines to those in plasma is 57 in nephrotic, but 36,500 in non-proteinuric patients. This difference results for a minor part from differences of renin and protein content of the plasmas, for a major part from differences of urineprotein content in the two groups. It is estimated from data of several authors that, assuming the plasma as the sole source of renin in urine, the “specific reninactivity” in normal urine might not increase much more than 30-fold in comparance with plasma by selective filtration of the relatively small renin-proteinmolecule. We conclude from our results that the greater part of renin in urine derives from tubular secretion of the enzyme.
Notes:
