Notes: This paper presents comparative studies on the performance of two titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-1Mn, Ti-45.9Al-8Nb) in an oxidizing atmosphere at 700 oC and 800 oC. Testing procedurecomprised thermogravimetric measurements at a constant temperature and in thermal cyclingconditions (1-h and 20-h cycles at constant temperature followed by rapid cooling). The overallduration of the cyclic oxidation tests was up to 1000 hours. The oxidized specimens were analyzedin terms of chemical composition, phase composition, and morphology (SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS,XRD). The extent and forms of alloy degradation were evaluated on the basis of microscopicobservation of specimen fractures and cross-sections. Selected specimens were examined by meansof XPS, SIMS and GDS. Oxidation mechanism of Ti-46Al-8Nb was assessed a two-stage oxidationmethod using oxygen-18 and oxygen-16. Apparently, the oxidation of this alloy proceeded inseveral stages. According to XPS, already after quite short reaction time, the specimens werecovered with a very thin oxide film, mainly composed of aluminum oxide (corundum). A thickerlayer of titanium dioxide (rutile) developed underneath. These two layers were typical of theoxidation products formed on this alloy, even when tested in thermal cycling conditions. In general, the scale had a complex multilayer structure but it was thin and adherent. Under the continuouslayer of titania, there was a fine-grained zone composed of mixed oxides. The alloy/scale interfacewas marked with niobium-rich precipitates embedded in a titanium-rich matrix. There were someindications of secondary processes occurring under the initial continuous oxide layers (e.g.characteristic layout of pores or voids). Thickness of inner scale layers clearly increased accordingto parabolic kinetics, while that of the outer compact layer (mainly TiO2) changed only slightly. Thedistribution of oxygen isotopes across the scale/alloy interface indicated two-way diffusion of thereacting species – oxygen inward and metals outward diffusion. Silicon deposited on Ti-6Al-1Mnalloy positively affected scale adhesion and remarkably reduced alloy degradation rate

Notes: Abstract Chromaluminide diffusion coatings on nickel and nickel-base superalloys, EI 867 and IN 100, have been formed by a two-step pack cementation technique. The effect of pack composition on coating formation and structure has been discussed. It has been stated that the appropriate choice of coating parameters enables the enrichment of aluminide coating in chromium either near its surface or near the coating/substrate interface.

Notes: Abstract Aluminide and chromaluminide diffusion coatings on nickel and a nickel-base superalloy, EI 867, were subjected to different corrosion tests consisting of oxidation under isothermal and thermal cycling conditions, and oxidation in the presence of fused sodium sulfate. It was found that chromium present in the surface layers of aluminide coatings has a beneficial effect on their resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion.

Notes: Sulfidation of alloy having nominal composition Ni-23Co-19Cr-12Al (wt%) with and without the addition of 0.6% yttrium was studied at temperatures 1073-1273 K in sulfur vapor at atmospheric pressure and in H2/H2S gas mixtures at sulfur pressure of 10-3 and 10-1.5 Pa. Sulfidation runs were followed thermogravimetrically. Phase and chemical composition of sulfide scales and scale morphologies were determined by means of XRD, EDX, EPM and SEM analyses. After certain initial period sulfidation of both materials followed approximately a parabolic rate law. The estimated sulfidation rates for each alloy increased with sulfur pressure and temperature. The sulfide scales on both materials showed complex microstructures and compositions, depending on sulfidation conditions, with several sulfide and sulfospinel phases present, such as (Ni,Co)S, (Ni,Co)3S4, (Ni,Co)Cr2S4, (Cr,Ni,Co)Al2S4 or (Cr,Ni,Co)S and (Cr,Ni,Co)3S4. There was no evidence of yttrium segregation either to the grain boundary regions in the scale or to the alloy/scale interface. Yttrium dissolved in the sulfide phases and accelerated the sulfidation process. This behaviour was ascribed to the doping effect.

Description / Table of Contents: Sulfidierung der Fe-40 At.% Al-Legierung in H2/H2S-Mischungen bei hohen TemperaturenDie Sulfidierung einer kubisch-raumzentrierten Legierung mit der Nennzusammensetzung Fe-40 At.% Al wurde bei Temperatures von 1073-1273 K in Wasserstoff/Schwefelwasserstoffmischungen bei Schwefeldrücken von 10-5 - 10-2 Pa untersucht.
Notes: Sulphidation of an ordered bee alloy having the nominal composition Fe-40 at.% Al was studied at temperatures of 1073-1273 K in hydrogen/hydrogen sulphide mixtures at sulphur pressures of 10-5 - 10-2 Pa. The sulphidation runs were followed thermogravimetrically. Phase and chemical composition of the sulphide scales and the scale morphologies were determined by means of XRD, EDX, EPMA and SEM. The sulphidation runs showed a relatively fast uptake of sulphur at the beginning followed by a gradual slowdown. The estimated parabolic rate constants for the second stage of the reaction were of the order of 10-12 - 10-11 kg2/m4s, i. e. comparable to the oxidation rates of alumina formers in the same temperature range. The initial faster growth of the sulphide scale was attributed to the formation of iron-aluminum sulphospinel whereas the second stage to the development of aluminum sulphide at the alloy/scale interface.

Notes: Sulphidation behaviour of β-NiAl intermetallic compound and NiAl-Cr alloys has been studied as a function of temperature (1073- 1273 K) and sulphur vapour pressure (10-5-104 Pa) usi ig various experimental techniques. It has been found that over the whole temperature and sulphur pressure range studied the sulphidation process follows parabolic kinetics, being thus diffusion Controlled. The sulphidation rate of β-NiAl intermetallic compound decreased with decreasing sulphur pressure, down to about 1 Pa, and at lower pressures (1-10-5, Pa) the rate of this process became virtually pressure independent. The sulphidation rate of NiAl-Cr alloys was higher than that of β-NiAl intermetallic compound and increased with increasing chromium content in the alloy. In contrast to β-NiAl, the sulphidation rate of alloys decreased with decreasing sulphur activity over the whole pressure range studied. The scales formed on β-NiAl and NiAl-Cr alloys were heterogeneous and mostly multilayer. In addition, an internal sulphidation zone was observed in the underlying metallic phase. Nickel sulphide nodules were always present on the scale surface when the sulphur pressure in the environment exceeded the dissociation pressure of this sulphide. The main part of the scale formed on β-NiAl consisted of NiAl2S4 sulphospinel. Al2S3 inclusions were present in the internal sulphidation zone. On alloys containing up to 10 at% Cr the main part of the scale was composed of two sulphospinel phases, NiAl2S4 and (Cr,Al)3S4, while on alloys with higher chromium content a stratified scale, consisting of Ni3S2 and (Cr,Al)3S4 was formed. (Cr, Al)3S4 and Al2S3 inclusions were present in the internal sulphidation zone of all chromium-containing alloys. According to marker experiments the scales on the investigated materials grow predominantly by an outward diffusion of cations. At sulphur pressures lower than the dissociation pressure of Ni3S2, β-NiAl intermetallic shows excellent corrosion resistance in sulphur-containing atmospheres, its sulphidation rates being comparable with the oxidation rates of chromia forming alloys.
