Notes: Abstract Lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas is a rare lesion which may mimic a pancreatic pseudocyst or mucinous cystic neoplasm. To our knowledge, this lesion has never been reported in the radiologic literature. We present a patient with lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas, and we discuss the radiographic and pathologic findings.

Notes: Abstract  Under favorable conditions, a retrospective test for reliability of published sets of physical property data becomes possible. The test and the necessary conditions for its use are discussed. The test is applied, by example, to well-documented, periodically republished nuclidic (atomic) masses of nine low atomic number nuclides. An index of reliability is suggested and evaluated for the example.

Notes: Abstract Detection of hemoperitoneum in splenic trauma is as important as detection of the visceral injury itself. Observation of a consistent spectrum of fluid accumulation in patients with splenic trauma prompted us to investigate the patterns in more detail. Twenty-three computed tomographic (CT) scans in 20 patients were evaluated with respect to presence of fluid collections in various peritoneal and retroperitoneal compartments. These were correlated with severity of injury and operative and pathologic findings. Hemoperitoneum was detected in the pelvis (65%), paracolic gutters (52%), left subphrenic space (48%), perihepatic space (48%), Morison's pouch (17%) and in the lesser sac (9%). In addition to free fluid, pleural fluid (39%) and retroperitoneal hematoma in the left anterior pararenal space (13%) were also encountered. These ancillary findings may help to substantiate the diagnosis of splenic trauma in equivocal cases, particularly when the spleen itself is obscured by artifacts. Early detection may reduce mortality and morbidity associated with splenic trauma.

Notes: Detailed observations are made of the breakdown of Friedel's law in electron diffraction, using the single-crystal intensity distribution from cadmium sulfide in the [21{\bar 3}0] orientation. It has been found by experiment that no breakdown of Friedel's law occurs in the zero-order beam distribution. An analysis of the problem due to Moodie, using multiple-scattering diagrams, has also led to this result. Multiple-scattering diagrams are used here to illustrate the symmetry properties of the zero-beam distribution. Rules are given for the deduction of the other symmetry elements of the projected structure from the diffraction-pattern symmetry, and from the occurrence of dynamic extinction bands in the kinematically forbidden reflections. These are illustrated by further pictures from cadmium sulfide. This analysis is simplified in the present work by neglecting non-zero-layer interactions. Results obtained by n-beam calculation using the multi-slice method show the possibility of quantitative interpretation, and of absolute orientation determination. The limitations of the systematic dynamic approximation and also of a systematic approximation using corrected scattering potentials are examined for this substance.

Notes: Measurements made on convergent-beam patterns from MgO taken near the [001] zone-axis at two fixed temperatures have been studied in detail. Two types of patterns, namely the symmetrical excitation of a single 200 reflexion and the simultaneous excitation of the 200, 020, 220, reflexions were studied, using up to 129 beams in the dynamical calculations. The absorption function, Vih exp (−BiS2), was found to be well defined at the zone axis, allowing separate determination of Vih and Bi. For the pattern for single excitation, Vi0 = 0.6 volt, Vih = 0.14 volt, Bi = B = 0.3, was determined at room temperature. In comparing the two types of pattern at high temperature an increase in Vih of between two and three times was found for the 3-reflexion pattern. This increase, and the more normal value found for the single excitation pattern, seems to accord with other experience that the dynamical increase in Vih, as predicted by Yoshioka and Kainuma, possibly occurs in the vicinity of a many-line intersection of the Kossel pattern but not at the zone axis.

Notes: Changes are advocated in some of the definitions, units and notation current in electron diffraction. The purpose of those changes is to separate descriptions of properties of materials from the experiments intended to measure them, and to exhibit as clearly as possible the relationship between the differing properties of a material accessible in X-ray and electron work.

Notes: A method for the numerical evaluation of N-beam diffraction amplitudes and intensities which has been successfully employed over the last few years is described. This derives from the multi-slice formulation of Cowley and Moodie. The physical basis of the method and practical approaches to calculation are described.
