Notes: Abstract The solvent extraction of the rare earth elements, yttrium and scandium with trioctylphosphine oxide in the presence of strong complexing and various salting-out agents has been studied. As a result, a technique was developed for the extractionchromatography recovery of the rare earth elements and yttrium with simultaneous purification practically from all the elements, including scandium, usually present in the mineral samples.

Notes: Abstract A method for the determination of Hf in an Yb matrix using the reaction176Hf(α, 3n)177W is described. The excitation function of this reaction was measured and the4He ion energy of 36 MeV was chosen.177W was determined by γ-spectrometry after chemical isolation by means of extraction chromatography with tri-n-butyl phosphate. Calibration measurements were carried out with known quantities ofnatHf. The sensitivity limit obtained was at the level of 3·10−8 g/g. The Hf admixtures innatYb and176Yb samples were estimated quantitatively.

Notes: Abstract Radiochemical separations of trace amounts of actinides produced in heavy ion reactions with actinide targets are described. The neptunium behavior in the separation process using extraction chromatography with HDEHP is investigated. To select the optimal separation conditions for Np from the other actinides and from each other, their extraction by HDEHP has been studied in such solutions as HCl, NHO3, HClO4, HF, H2C2O4 and H3PO4. A two-step separation procedure yields fractions of individual actinide elements.

Notes: Abstract The selectivity of trioctylphosphineoxide /TOPO/ with respect to rare earths and sc was used to develop a single step separation method for43–48Sc from transition metals irradiated with high energy protons /660 MeV/. The target material serves as a salting-out agent in the described extraction-separation technique. Rapid and quantitative recovery of scandium is achieved using extraction chromatography. Radiochemically pure carrier-free Sc was separated from the following irradiated metals: Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu and Zn.

Notes: Abstract In the first part some methods of the radiochemical neutron activation analysis of U, Th and REE trace amounts in geological samples have been studied. They are: (i) cation exchange and extraction, and (ii) extraction chromatography. The behaviour of U and Th was also observed and conclusions were made regarding the applicability of the methods for the rocks which are rich in U and Th but depleted of REE. The method is recommen ded for the selective separation of U and Th. The second part represents an effective separation method for the determination of all REE and Th contents in monazites.

Notes: Abstract A group of 30 Polish families with clinical signs of familial hypercholesterolemia was studied for the presence of germ-line mutations in the LDL-R and ApoB-100 genes. Screening of the LDL-R gene was performed at the genomic DNA level by single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis of all 18 exons and extended by sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products showing abnormalities. The occurrence of large LDL-R gene alterations was evaluated by analysis of restriction enzyme patterns on Southern blots and using the long-PCR technique. The ApoB-100 gene was studied by combined allele-specific and asymmetric PCR for the occurrence of the common B-3500 missense mutation G to A at nucleotide position 10,708. Germ-line mutations were found in 17 families. In 12 of them LDL-R gene mutations were detected. Three of 11 different mutations had previously been described in other populations (3-bp deletion of codon 197; Ser156Leu; Gly571Glu). Of the mutations not previously recognized and identified in Polish families, there were three small deletions (2-bp deletion AG at codon 291; 4-bp deletion CCCT at codons 661–662; 1-bp deletion A at codon 830), and four point mutations (Arg239Stop, Cys331Stop, Asn543Ser, Gln665Stop). Additionally, one large (∼1-kb) LDL-R gene deletion between exons 6 and 9 was identified. In five families, the B-3500 mutation within the ApoB-100 gene was revealed.

Notes: Abstract In the course of preparing experiments with178m2Hf, optical isotope shifts for the stable Hf isotopes and for172Hf were measured. For the rms nuclear charge radii we obtain 〈r2〉172 -(r2)178=−0.242(16) fm2.

Notes: Abstract The extraction of HNO3, TcO 4 − , and Pd by solutions of dibutyl N,N-diethylcarbamoylmethylenephosphonate (DBDECMP) and dibutyl N,N-diethylcarbamoylphosphonate (DBDECP) in CCl4 has been studied. At low aqueous acidities, HNO3 is extracted by both extractants (S) as HNO3·S and HNO3·S2, at 〉1M HNO3 only HNO3·S is formed. The distribution of TcO 4 − and Pd(II) is nearly independent of HNO3 concentration. A second power dependence on extractant concentration was found for the extraction of Pd(II) by DBDECMP and TcO 4 − by DBDECP, and a 4th power dependence for TcO 4 − -DBDECMP.
