    Notizen: The system carbon dioxide–acetylene at cryogenic temperatures has been reinvestigated. Measurements have been made of the vapor pressure as functions of composition and temperature, and of infrared spectra of cryofilms at 90 K as a function of composition. It was concluded that, under suitable conditions, carbon dioxide and acetylene can co-crystallize to form cubic crystals of the stoichiometry CO2⋅C2H2, and that this phase is metastable with respect to the two pure phases. This metastability was confirmed by following the decomposition of CO2⋅C2H2 at 90 K as a function of time, and the fractional decomposition was found to vary sigmoidally with time. The kinetics of the decomposition are roughly described by a model in which the rate increases as product nuclei grow and decreases as the reactant is depleted (Avrami model). © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The design, construction, and operation of an optical build-up cavity (BUC) designed primarily for use in molecular beam laser spectroscopy where signal is proportional to laser power, is presented. The design is such that the cavity has no internal adjustment controls, needing only alignment with respect to the laser and molecular beams. When used with a single-mode titanium:sapphire laser, a circulating cw power of 900 W was achieved. The BUC increased the signal to noise of the experiment by a factor of 390 relative to a single crossing of laser and molecular beam without degrading resolution. Performance of the BUC is limited by heating of its mirrors by the high power densities incident upon them (∼3 MW cm−2). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The ν2+3ν3 vibrational overtone of acetylene was recorded using an optothermal molecular beam spectrometer. The sample excitation region was surrounded by a build-up cavity and by electrodes which allowed the observation of Stark splittings of the spectral transitions. An analysis of the J dependence of the splittings determined that the (01300)0 is mixed by the Stark field with the IR (infrared) dark state (11200)0, and that the energy of the ν1+ν2+2ν3 transition is 11 611.585±0.018 cm−1. The spectra also showed transitions to highly excited bending levels: These transitions were observable because they borrowed intensity from the more intense ν2+3ν3 stretching overtone as they were tuned into coincidence. The bending states were found to have extremely high polarizabilities which may account for previously reported collision dynamics. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Infrared spectra of supersonic jets of carbon dioxide seeded in helium are reported: Features assignable to clusters were observed for the ν2, ν3, ν1+ν3, and 2ν2+ν3 bands. A detailed study was made of the ν3 band, from which it was concluded that the clusters do not adopt the face-centered cubic crystal structure of solid carbon dioxide. The observed spectra indicate that the cluster geometry is largely determined by pairwise interactions between adjacent molecules. Furthermore, expansions of pure carbon dioxide produced clusters whose spectra indicate motional averaging: such clusters seem to be fluid on a picosecond time scale.

    Notizen: We have succeeded in obtaining infrared spectra of molecules adsorbed on the surface of clusters. The method is based on the photodissociation spectroscopy technique developed in our laboratory for the study of cluster beams and on a simple but effective way to prepare mixed clusters in which an IR chromophore is attached to the surface of a nonabsorbing host cluster. The possible extension of this technique to the study of molecular spectroscopy at the surface of clusters large enough to simulate crystal and liquid surfaces is also discussed.

    Notizen: A novel method for the calibration of spectral line intensities measured by photoacoustic spectroscopy is presented. This technique uses an electrically heated wire to mimic the acoustic signal generated by the laser absorption of a sample gas. A model was devised to describe the acoustic signal generated by both sources and to calibrate the cell. The transition dipole moment of the R(7) transition of the ν2+3ν3 vibrational overtone band of acetylene was measured and found to be in good agreement with the literature value. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The diffusive trapping technique, in which a condensable vapor is injected into a cold buffer gas, has been used to produce clusters of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide containing approximately 109 molecules. The infrared spectrum of these clusters was recorded using a Fourier-transform spectrometer. Major features of the carbon dioxide spectrum were reproduced by solving Maxwell's equations for light interacting with a sphere having a complex dielectric response equal to that of solid carbon dioxide. The calculation also allowed for an estimation of the cluster size. Additional features of the spectrum suggest the presence of edges and corners on the clusters.

    Notizen: A method is described for stabilization of a cw CO2 laser by locking it to a modulated external cavity which is locked to a HeNe reference laser. This avoids the necessity of modulating the CO2 laser. Stability values of a few tens of kHz on the microsecond and minute time scales have been achieved.
