    Notes: Abstract. Prostate and urinary bladder cancer are the most frequently encountered malignancies of the urinary tract. Appropriate use of the different imaging techniques is crucial for accurate assessment of prognosis and for the development of appropriate treatment planning. Especially determination of local tumor extension and detection of nodal or bone metastases is extremely important. In this regard MR imaging is the most promising imaging technique. Therefore, in this review its role in staging these malignancies is evaluated and compared with clinical staging, and other imaging techniques. Finally, future developments, such as new sequences, new contrast agents, the role of surface coils and MR-guided biopsy, are considered. Also, the preferred radiological approach is discussed.

    Notes: The production of negative hydrogen and deuterium ions is studied in the foundation for fundamenteel Onderzoek der Materie surface conversion experiment. In this experiment a Barium surface is used to convert positive ions into negative ions. We have developed a detector able to analyze the characteristics of the surface produced negative ion beam. Measurements with this detector show that in barium surface conversion sources negative ions can be formed by recoiling and direct reflection of positive ions from the barium surface. The broad angular distribution of the surface produced negative ions is determined to extend over 16°.

    Notes: The expanding plasma obtained from a cascaded arc thermal source is analyzed with double probe, mass spectrometric, and Faraday cup measurements. In the argon–nitrogen mixtures a decrease in ion fluence is observed, contrary to pure argon plasmas in which recombination is insignificant. The recombination in argon–nitrogen plasmas is caused by charge exchange between atomic ions and N2 molecules followed by dissociative recombination. Hence, these processes account for the enhanced axial decay of the plasma density and also for the change in the ion mass spectra of the ion beam extracted from the expanding plasma. The total ion beam current density is also governed by charge exchange followed by dissociative recombination and is thus dependent on the recirculating neutral molecules.

    Notes: A H2 /Ar cascaded arc plasma source has been experimentally characterized by determination of the efficiency, the electric field, and the pressure gradient of the arc. The results show that the efficiency of a H2/Ar cascaded arc drops when the hydrogen flow rate is increased. The electron temperature in the argon cascaded arc has been derived to be in the range 9000–12 500 K. For a hydrogen arc, the mass dissociation degree of hydrogen molecules has been derived to be above 60%.

    Notes: Changes in the gonado-somatic index and abundance of the different Labeobarbus species in the mouths of four major afferent rivers of Lake Tana, Ethiopia, were monitored monthly during 1999 and 2000. Riverine spawning was characteristic for seven of Lake Tana's 15 contemporary Labeobarbus species. These seven did not show spatial segregation among afferent rivers but significant temporal segregation occurred in aggregating in the river mouths and migrating towards the upstream spawning areas during the breeding season (June–October). Among the eight other species, peak gonad development occurred generally in the same period as in the riverine spawners. These species, however, did not aggregate in the river mouths during the breeding period and were absent from the upstream spawning areas. A derived, novel strategy, lacustrine spawning was hypothesized for these eight Labeobarbus species. This hypothesis was further supported by observations of running female fishes in the littoral zones distant from any of the afferent rivers. This derived strategy is only common among the littoral-dwelling Labeobarbus species with restricted distribution patterns. At present it is thought that sequential waves of speciation and habitat divergence followed by trophic specialization, shaped the diversity of Lake Tana labeobarbs.

    Notes: With more than 2000 fish species the Cyprinidae is the largest family of vertebrates. Lake Tana, a large lake (3050 km2) situated in the NW- highlands of Ethiopia, harbours, as far as we know the only remaining intact species flock of large (max. 100 cm FL) cyprinid fishes (15 Barbus spp.). One of the most intriguing aspects of this endemic Barbus species flock is the large number of piscivores (8). Cyprinid fishes seem not well designed for piscivory, they lack teeth in the oral jaw, have a small slit-shaped pharyngeal cavity and all lack a stomach with low pH for digesting large prey. Many barbs are benthivorous species, like the ancestral barb in Lake Tana's isolated system. Why then is piscivory, which is rare among cyprinids, so common in Lake Tana Barbus? The aim of present study was to compare the performance and techniques of these piscivorous Barbus with known piscivores from other fish families. We studied prey handling times over prey size, prey capture using high-speed movies, and assessed the effect of prey size on performance and prey selection in the field. Performances were explained by functional morphology of their feeding system. Overall, Lake Tana's piscivorous Barbus perform relatively ‘poor’, compared to piscivores from other fish families. For example, Lake Tana's piscivores are only able to handle prey fish smaller than 16% of their own body length. However, Lake Tana lacks potential piscivorous competitors, rendering the piscivorous Barbus by far the ‘best’ and apparently highly successful. They have adapted to all available macro-habitats (littoral, offshore pelagic and offshore benthic), using different techniques (ambush, pursuit and cruising), a unique scenario for barbs.

    Notes: A tribrid gene containing ompF, faeC, and lacZ sequences was constructed by subcloning a large central segment of the K88ab gene encoding the fibrillar subunit-like protein FaeC into the open reading frame expression vector pORF2. The resulting tribrid protein was isolated and used to raise antibodies against the FaeC protein. These antibodies were then used for the detection and subcellular localization of the FaeC protein in Escherichia coli harbouring the K88ab-encoding plasmid pFM205 or mutant derivatives. Immunoblotting of subcellular fractions and of purified fibrillae, and agglutination experiments using whole cells revealed that the FaeC protein is present in the periplasm and as a minor component in the K88ab fibrillae. FaeC was also detected in purified K88ac and K88ad fibrillae. Immunoelectron microscopy confirmed the presence of FaeC in K88ab fibrillae, particularly at the tips of the longer fibrillae.

    Notes: Summary Groups of adult male volunteers were exposed to alcohol, carbon monoxide or trichloroethylene; performance in mental loading tests and effects on physiological parameters were studied. Using alcohol as reference substance, producing marked effects at blood alcohol levels 〉 0.3g/1, the effects from carbon monoxide and of trichloroethylene in dosages as encountered in social and occupational life proved to be much less severe, at most borderline. The experimental results only apply to the specific conditions of the study: healthy male adults of 20–30 years, no vigilance tasks, no longterm exposure. The experiments suggest the possibility of hazardous impairment of performance in older subjects, particularly in case of combined exposure to various external loads.
