Summary A method is described in which an analog computer is used to study the galactose turnover after an oral galactose dosage. Using the galactose blood level curve it is possible by this method to follow separately the kinetics of the galactose metabolism in different compartments. This method is possible because the metabolic pathways of the galactose are known in the human being, a model of them can be made, and they can be mathematically expressed. People with a diseased and with a normal liver differ from each other considering their ability to eliminate galactose in the liver and the blood. The delayed elimination from the blood is a result of the decreased galactose turnover of the liver. We hope to show by the example of the computer analysis of the galactose turnover, that this method is suitable to give information (from the blood level curve) about the metabolic function within the human being. The computer can be used in such a manner that hypotheses are set up and experimental results are simulated or controlled, respectively. Thus the clinical medicine has got a new approach to the problems of human metabolism, especially in that of diseased people. Analyses of the function of partial steps or of separate organs which so far were not, or only with difficulty available for control, were this made possible.
Notes:
