    Notes: Abstract Relationships between the duration of antennular attachment of cyprids ofBalanus amphitrite and forces associated with detachment were assessed in a small flume. For six of twelve sets of measurements obtained on separate dates between 27 January and 2 June 1989, drag forces associated with detachment were significantly and positively correlated with duration of attachment within the range 100 to 103 s. In general, the instantaneous drag force exerted on cyprids at detachment was more strongly correlated with duration of attachment than was either the maximum or mean force exerted prior to detachment. Our indirect method of estimating drag forces from shear velocities measured ≤0.5 cm from cyprids (i.e., ≤10 body lengths) probably underestimated the true association between detachment force and attachment time since the spatial coherence of shear velocities characterizing turbulent flows in the flume was not strong at these scales. The relationship between attachment time and drag force at detachment suggests that spatial and temporal variability in fluid forces in situ may contribute to stochastic variations in intensities of settlement ofB. amphitrite. Stresses sustained by the antennular adhesive of cyprids ofB. amphitrite were calculated to standardize forces to the area of antennular contact and permit comparisons with similar measurements made onSemibalanus balanoides by other investigators. Stresses sustained by the adhesive ofB. amphitrite were an order of magnitude lower than those reported for the adhesive of the larger cyprids ofS. balanoides. This difference may reflect differences in the stress sustainable by the adhesive secreted onto antennular pads when loaded purely in tension (measured previously) rather than in a combination of shear and tension (calculated here). Alternatively, there may be interspecific differences in the adhesive used for reversible attachment or in behavioral responses of exploring cyprids to strong flow.

    Notes: Abstract. We report core-level and valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and carbon [ ]K near-edge X-ray-absorptionfine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) results of plasma-polymerized C60. In comparison with evaporated C60 the C 1s peak is broader and asymmetric for the C60 polymer and its shake-up satellites diminished. Furthermore, the features of the valence-band as well as the features of the π* antibonding orbitals of the C60 polymer are broader and reduced in intensity. Changes in the electronic structure are attributed to the polymerization of C60, the post-plasma functionalization of the surface by oxygen after exposure to atmosphere, and the occurrence of amorphous carbon.

    Notes: About 35 years ago the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands set about rationalizing and modernizing its sewage-treatment operations. Treatment was carried out in one central, advanced sewagetreatment works producing a Royal Commission effluent which received nominal dilution in a small stream before discharging into the sea in one of the foremost bathing areas on the island.In 1989, a thorough investigation was carried out on the options to secure an environmentally acceptable solution to effluent disposal. The investigation concluded that disinfection, in combination with a change to the outfall discharge point, offered the most cost-effective solution. Alternative disinfection techniques were identified, which recognized the nature and sensitivity of the receiving waters and the limited space available on the site. Only ultraviolet disinfection was suitable.An ultraviolet disinfection system depends on the exposure of the micro-organisms causing disease to their germicidal wavelength. Light of this wavelength (about 253.7 nanometres) is absorbed by the nucleic acids in the cell which damages or rearranges the genetic information, effectively rendering the cell unable to replicate and resulting in the death of the cell.In over 300 installations in North America the system has proven to be reliable, simple, economic and, above all, environmentally acceptable.An ultraviolet disinfection system is currently being installed at Bellozanne, Jersey.

    Notes: Self-diffusion coefficients D of CD4 and ND3 were measured with the NMR-PGSE-technique over a wide range of temperature and pressure (10–200 MPa, 150–450 K for CD4, 10–200 MPa, 200–450 K for ND3). When compared to the protonated species, both substances show a dynamic isotope effect Dr=DX–H/DX–D that was found to rise to 1.3 (CD4) and 1.4 (ND3) at the lowest temperatures studied. This behavior is similar to a number of other simple liquids (HF, CH3OH, H2O). Classical theories for single particle motion in liquids suggest a dependence of Dr on the square root of the inverse mass ratio, or the square root of the inverse ratio of the moments of inertia, if translation-rotation coupling is dominant. Dr should, however, be temperature-independent. The strong temperature-dependence of Dr and its high value at low temperatures found in many liquids can thus not be explained by single particle properties, but rather has to be viewed as a collective phenomenon. It was suggested earlier that the stronger hydrogen bonds expected in the deuterated liquids are responsible for this behavior. However, the fact that methane shows a similar dynamic isotope effect is an indication that more complex mechanisms are responsible for the deviations from classical models of liquid dynamics. Quantum mechanical calculations suggest that backscattering effects may describe this interesting phenomenon. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Over the next decade the UK will experience significant, imposed changes in the quantity of sewage sludge produced and in the means available for its disposal. Existing practices are being reappraised and new technologies are being explored to cope with a predicted 40% increase in the quantity for disposal. Thermal drying of sludge undoubtedly has a role to play in coping with this demand.The two principal process types, i.e. direct and indirect heat application, are appraised in depth and a comparison is drawn. A case study is identified to examine the energy demands of the process, including the potential for heat recovery and for resource reuse. The environmental impact of a typical process is also examined.

    Notes: N-terminal amino acid sequences for vitellogenin (Vtg) from six species of teleost fish (striped bass, mummichog, pinfish, brown bullhead, medaka, yellow perch and the sturgeon) are compared with published N-terminal Vtg sequences for the lamprey, clawed frog and domestic chicken. Striped bass and mummichog had 100% identical amino acids between positions 7 and 21, while pinfish, brown bullhead, sturgeon, lamprey, Xenopus and chicken had 87%, 93%, 60%, 47%, 47-60%) for four transcripts and had 40% identical, respectively, with striped bass for the same positions. Partial sequences obtained for medaka and yellow perch were 100% identical between positions 5 to 10. The potential utility of this conserved sequence for studies on the biochemistry, molecular biology and pathology of vitellogenesis is discussed.

    Notes: The self-diffusion coefficients D for neat CO2 have been determined in a wide p, T range by the Stejskal-Tanner NMR method applying pulsed field gradients. In our apparatus CO2 supercools readily and the data could be collected between 223 K and 450 K at pressures up to 200 MPa. The ρ, T dependence of D(CO2) shows significant deviation from hard-sphere fluid behavior. The rough hard sphere (RHS) model, as well as the simple hydrodynamic theory show a very unusual temperature dependence, when compared to other simple fluids. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
