Notes: A programme was undertaken in order to quantify the heavy-metal contribution from domestic sources with respect to total loads entering a chosen sewage-treatment works. Input waters, household cleaning and body-care products, and wastewater from household appliances, were sampled and analysed for heavy metals. The data were combined with literature values to predict the total load of heavy metals entering the sewage-treatment works from the study catchment. This paper identifies the major domestic sources of heavy metals and quantifies them based upon a catchment model.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - The importance of silver mining in South America over the past 400 years as a source of mercury in the environment has been discussed in Scientific Correspondence1'2. Clearly, accurate analytical data are required for sensible discussion. Camargo2 makes the reasonable suggestion that the ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The effect of the size of the added increment in standard additions determination on precision is evaluated by computer simulation. The precision obtained for different modes of calculating results is compared for double and single additions. The use of double additions up to the top of the linear range, combined with calculation of results by a weighted linear regression, is recommended.

Notes: Summary The performance of standard additions calibration is compared with direct calibration against standards. Computer simulation is used to provide information on the reduction of the useful analytical range associated with the use of standard additions. Provided that interference control measures necessary for direct calibration do not themselves degrade performance, the range over which acceptable precision is likely to be obtained will be reduced to between one third and one quarter ofthat attainable using direct calibration. Details of the usefulness of simple quality control measures which can be used in conjunction with standard additions are presented and their limitations are discussed. The conditions most favourable to the use of standard additions are outlined.
