Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of primaquine (PQ) and its major carboxylic acid metabolite (PQC) have been studied in seven Indian patients withP. vivax malaria following PQ 15 mg/day p.o. for 14 days. After a single oral dose on Day 1, a mean peak blood concentration of 50.7 ng/ml PQ was attained after 2.3 h, which declined monoexponentially with a half-life of 5.6 h. The mean total body clearance was 37.6 l/h and the volume of distribution was 2921. The mean renal excretion (0–24 h) of the drug was only 0.54% of the dose and renal clearance was 0.189 l/h. Following chronic administration, none of the pharmacokinetic parameters was affected, and a steady state blood concentration of 2.5–4.2 ng/ml PQ was attained. After the first dose of PQ, PQC had a mean area under the blood concentration — time curve 11-fold higher than that of the parent drug. In contrast to the rapid distribution and elimination of PQ, the metabolite showed a longer mean residence time and accumulation in the body. The mean Cmax and AUC of the metabolite on Day 14 were 48 and 40% higher than the corresponding Day 1 values. The metabolite could not be detected in urine at any time in any patient. PQ and its metabolite did not show any accumulation in blood cells.

Notes: Abstract Kinetics of discharge of Zn2+ and Ni2+ have been studied polarographically in thiomalate media of constant ionic strength (μ=0.5) at the dropping mercury electrode. The reduction of both Zn2+ and Ni2+ was found to be irreversible. Hence, the kinetic parameters (transfer coefficient α, and forward rate constantK j,h o ) have been calculated byKoutecky's theoretical treatment as extended byMeites andIsrael.

Notes: Abstract The stoichiometry of the compounds formed by the interaction of Yb(III) perchlorate with anthranilate and nicotinate have been investigated by means of amperometric titrations. The titration curve provides evidence for the formation of 1:3 complexes. The reduction of Yb(III) and Yb(III) anthranilate and nicotinate ions are studied polarographically at constant ionic strength at 25 and 35 ± 1°C in aqueous-non aqueous mixtures. The reduction was found to be diffusion controlled, but the electrode process is irreversible in all cases. The kinetic parameters have been determined byKoutecky's method.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of aqueous polymerization of methacrylamide initiated by potassium persulphate-malonic acid redox pair has been investigated at 50±1°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The initial rate of polymerization has been found to be square root dependence to the initial concentration of potassium persulphate and malonic acid. The order of reaction with respect to monomer has been found to be unity. The overall energy of activation has been found to be 66±1 KJ/mol. The effect of addition of manganous sulphate and sulphuric acid has been investigated. On the basis of experimental results a suitable mechanism has been proposed.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The precise nature of the complex formation between Thallium(I) and β-mercaptopropionic acid in aqueous 0.1M-KNO3 has been investigated by potentiometric and conductometric titration techniques. It was found that Tl(I) forms only one, 1∶1, colourless complex predominating at pH 9.0–10.5. The stability constant of the complex has been determined by applyingCalvin andMelchior's extention ofBjerrum's method at three different temperatures. The logK values were found to be 2.775, 2.850 and 2.935 at 20, 30 and 40° C respectively. The thermodynamic functions of complexation, ΔG, ΔH and ΔS were also evaluated at 30° C and found to be −3.95 K-cal/mole, −3.34 K-cal/mole and +2.01 Cal/deg. respectively.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of oxidation of quinol by mercuric nitrate in presence ofAcOH-H2O-HNO3 mixture has been investigated in order to find the active species of mercuric nitrate involved in the oxidation in this medium. The order of reaction both with respect to quinol and Hg(II) is found to be one. The reaction rate slightly increases with the increase in [HNO3] and the decrease of the dielectric constant of the medium. The reaction rate retards on addition of KNO3. There is no evidence for complex formation between quinol and Hg(II). These results suggest that HgNO + 3 might be the active species in this medium. A probable mechanism involving a two electron transfer in the rate determining step has been suggested. The producedp-benzoquinone does not exist in free state but forms a stable (1 : 1) complex with mercuric nitrate which has been characterized by TLC and IR studies.
